Cheers boys, in the planning of hosting a Melbourne event this year in conjunction with Newman College and the MCC. All are most welcome I'll keep the site posted.

If you are fair dinkum I would be in contact with chief to make it a site wide awareness program mate.

More than fair dinkum brother, I have four cousins who completed, three were victims of clergy at St Alipius, Noel slammed his car into a big old Oak out the front of the church (just like Danny, and the woman in Hepburn this week!!!). Would need some advice as to how to make contact but agree this sort of forum would be an ideal vehicle to get the message of support out there to someone with suicidal ideation, and just quietly I'm sure they are here.

ps Metal would you know an old mate of mine over there Daryl Mapelson?

Young gun bolters and stars in doubt: Every AFL club's likely best 22 for Round 1, 2020

CARLTON

B: Lachie Plowman, Jacob Weitering, Kade Simpson

HB: Sam Docherty, Liam Jones, Nic Newman

C: Sam Petrevski-Seton, Patrick Cripps, Sam Walsh

HF: Jack Silvagni, Levi Casboult, Zac Fisher

F: Mitch McGovern, Harry McKay, Eddie Betts

FOLL: Matthew Kreuzer, Marc Murphy, Ed Curnow

I/C: Jack Martin, Caleb Marchbank, Will Setterfield, Michael Gibbons

EMER: Paddy Dow, Jack Newnes, Tom Williamson, Matthew Kennedy

We say: Firstly, we’ve left Charlie Curnow out as the Blues have already confirmed he’ll be unavailable for the first few rounds due to a knee issue. But the returning Eddie Betts likely comes straight into the line-up, while Jack Martin should be given an early opportunity. There’s now some serious depth in the midfield, meaning it might be hard for young players like Lochie O’Brien and Paddy Dow to break into the line-up. Fingers crossed Sam Docherty will be healthy this year, because in a sense he could be the most impressive recruit of 2020.

No Cuningham ...

Yeah Cuningham will definitely come into that 22, reasonably confident Dow(Gibbons & Marchbank making way for mine) will make it as well and i would love to see Willo on a wing in front of Docherty, Weitering & SPS across half back as I think they would continually release him to be a real attacking weapon but not sure who he pushes out

There's always a bit of variety in these potential best 22's that different journos put together, after all they can't all be watching the team as closely as many of us die hards here, so there tends to be a lot of recency bias (picking incumbents or those with a lot of games played in the previous season) and not really much consideration of positional changes. I can't really remember Samo being mentioned as a defender too often outside of official CFC media, he's often referred to as a flanker/small forward/winger despite him finishing the season down back and training with the defenders this preseason.

DC's lack of continuity probably means a lot of these teams don't see him as a first or 2nd choice option, and there's no profile like Doc, Eddie, Martin, etc where they will always fit them in, even if they didn't play for us last year.

I get the feeling that this year we might see even more differences in the predicted round 1/best 22 teams as our depth - specifically the 23rd to maybe 30th player - has significantly increased over the past 12 months due to list additions, players returning from injury as well as further development from the younger crop.

I'll be intrigued to watch these team lists continue to drop in the lead up to round 1, particularly after each pre-season game when we can actually get some kind of visual on player form, fitness, positions and overall team structure.

A fair effort by the media, although at this stage I would have Cuners in for Marchbank

Decent emergencies, if we have a great run of injuries

Saw a report that Harry was about to rejoin full training - if true I would be surprised if he wasn't ready by round 1.

Slap me harder ...I forgot the champ!

I like it, certainly a contender

Would be great if we could have the injury run of the Lions for the last 2 years

Agreed.

We need SPS/DOw/Fisher/Stocker/Setterfield to all step up significantly and constantly injured players like Marchbank/Charlie/Cuningham/Williamson/Harry/Doc to have that good run you are tasking for....the bolded ones are 6 quality players each with their own factor X - which the side badly needs on the paddock.

Newman was a good addition last year to cover Doc and then Willo. But he had some shocking games when his kicking was off. When he had a bad game, he was terrible (also his best games were extremely good). I wouldnt be that upset if by years end he has been replaced by both Doc and Willo in our best 22.

You could say the same thing about most of our players

Newman has advanced his game (measurably) year on year, all the way back to when he was a 17 year old playing for Mornington.

Was overlooked for Dandenong in the tac u/18, went to Mornington, starred. Was asked to return to dandy as their 19 year old selection, starred.
Went to Frankston reserves, starred.
Spent the next season in the ones and won the b and f (?).
Got drafted, as a late rookie, manages to play seniors.
Had talent, but struggled to run out games. Sydney couldn’t get his skin folds down.
Traded to Carlton, was miles fitter than he had ever been after a single preseason.
No one realistically expected too much of him, he comes out rd with just about a bog performance
He then backs it up with a bog performance in rd 2.
He then dominates against his old club (he’s a competitive beast)
He then comes out against a top of the ladder w.c outfit and kicks 4 goals from hb. How many hbf have kicked four in a game?

Yes, he had some poor games in 2019, but I’d be backing Newman in to improve again this year, and have more and more of those extremely good games and less and less of the poor ones.

Round 1.

Newman Jones Plowman

Docherty Weitering SPS/Simpson

Murphy Walsh Cuningham

Simpson/SPS Casboult Martin

Kennedy McGovern Betts

Kreuzer, Cripps, Dow.

I/C: Ed, Setterfield, Fisher, Gibbons.

Emerg: Jack - If he can improve overhead marking and shots on goal possibly taking Kennedy's spot.

Newnes - No disrespect but tbh don't know much about him. Hoping for a solid depth player.

LOB & Willo - Spend some games at VFL level to test where they're at. See them both as (near) future best 22.

Round 1 -

Have to apply my views on who we'll like select but am disappointed for those we may not be able to fit in.
- Have to include Gibbons, Newnes, Martin and Betts.

Simpson Jones Plowman
Docherty Weitering SPS - Hard to argue against that.

Kreuzer Cripps Murphy
Walsh Setterfield Newnes

Martin
Casboult Fisher
Betts McKay McGovern

ECurnow Gibbons Newman Cuningham.

So, I'm now leaving out Dow, JSilvagni, Williamson, O'Brien, Marchbank, Stocker and CCurnow. That's bad.
