Ablett
Franklin
Judd
Mitchell
J Brown

Mitchell deserves special mention, the engine room of the Hawks
Good on Judd for performing like the way he can under all the pressure.

1. Ablett
2. Franklin
3. Cox
4. Judd
5. Pavlich

to those richo haters, if (i know this is a big 'if') Richmond had've won the half dozen games in which they only lost by 10 points or less last year, he would definately be in the top five for his efforts. The same could be said this year 'if' we had've won against the saints (not a lot more richo could've done) and not capitulated against the dogs.

Franklin
Ablett
Pavlich
Cox
Judd

Richo, Bartel, Hodge, Mitchel, could be a chance if those players fell out of form like Jono Brown
Pavlich would be the best in the league in a better team

I don't think this is a "Top 5 of 2008" thread is it?

Champion player and having a great season but not in the top 5 players in the competition.

It seems a lot of people only require a player to play a half a dozen good games to be considered in the top 5 players in the competition.

Richo has the record for most goals kicked at the G, is 12th on the all time goal kicking list, averages 8 marks a game over a whole career and many of them are contested, 9 times in the top 5 marks per game since 1996 of which 4 of these times ranked 1st (the other 3 years he was out of the top 5 was ranked 7th, 7th and 8th) and in a badly performed team.. That game he played with a cracked eye socket and kicked 4 goals was courageous as anything you could see..

He averages more marks and goals than wayne carey as well as pavlich, j brown and thats been sustained over a longer period.. I think richo gets underrated due to his occasional missed easy goals or stuff ups which people love to play up, his value and influence is massive

The fact of the matter is that it should be judged on 2008. What else matters? For example, if Gary Ablett hadn't played this year due to injury, would he be in the top 5 players? You are of no use to anyone if you cannot get on the park. If David Armitage led the league in possessions, hard ball gets and goal assists and had received 7 best on grounds this year, don't you think that that would have catapulted him to one of the top 5 players in the league? I think so. This is because there will always be the next Hird or Buckley or Judd ready to suddenly appear out of nowhere and take there game to the next level. Buddy did that in 2007. In 2006 I recall, Dean Polo thrashed Buddy in a VFL game! So you can see, you can't just go on reputations, you must also go on present form.

Richo has both the reputation (his record speaks for itself) and is currently in red hot form. He must be in the top 5 in the league.

I'm not the only one who thinks so. People a lot more knowledgeable than me have him at number 4 at this stage.

This is in the coaches award where both coaches vote on each game.

Game, set and match. Thank you.

Ablett was considered by most as the best player in the comp 2 weeks ago. Then like I said, he had an average game against Freo & didn't play on the weekend, so under those circumstances you can't say Cooneys been better this year.

So having a poor game means that it doesn't count?

That's strange, I would have thought that 7 consistently great games would be better than 5 great games and 1 poor game...but whatever.

I'm not arguing whether or not Cooney is better than Ablett, but that statement is a bit weird.

By the way, what else does Richo need to do to be classified in the elite category?

He has played over 250 games and kicked over 750 goals. Name a player in the history of the game that has kicked more then 750 goals and wouldnt be classified in the elite class, especially ones that are CHFs, like Richo is.

You'd classify Richmond as a proud club, right? If he is in their team of the century, you'd safely assume he is an elite player in today's competition.

Carey, Hird, Buckley, Voss, Harvey, Judd. These are players who are the elite that I'm talking about. Richo is not in the same company as these. I said top 5, not top 20.

I see, so because I know Richo is not in that small group of elite players, I must be a Richo hater? Bzzzzt! You got the wrong guy. I like Richo and rate Richo. But I'm absolutely 100% convinced he isn't in that top tier of players. There's others outside my top 5 that have legit claims to being there, it's just that Richo isn't one of them.

You obviously missed the whole pint of the thread.

Tip: Mst people have a rough running total on who the best player is. There is no hard and fast time period - people don't judge it on "this season" or "last 3 seasons only", it's rough running total where a few variables are taken into account.

This would be a common thought pattern:

Judd, best palyer in comp 05-07. Didn't win the MVP each seasons, but recognised as best player. Killed it in first half of 07 but then was injured. Half a season of injury put him back to the pack, Jono Brown hits white hot form at start of season 2008, has he overtaken Judd? Brown drps off and can't be considered number 1. What about Ablett? Was best player in comp last year, was a gun in late 06, and is still ne of the elites now. Judd not back to best form, maybe Ablett #1?

Why you're sitting there and weighing up Richo's whole career is beyond me? I suspect twats like you get your knickers in a twist because people like me have a strong opinion - and then your rationale goes out the window and you start arguing for argument's sake. You like to get all righteous about FA.

I'll throw B Johnson in there as somebody to consider, particularly going on the past couple of years.
I would have had him top 5 about a year ago. Was in white hot form for a couple of years and has always been in that pack just behind the real elites. Has drpped off a bit now.
