Pissed we let him go? What were we supposed to do?
He wanted to leave and it didn’t seem to be about money or opportunity.

we dont know what the contract offers were from Sydney versus Stkilda, maybe we undervalued him

I remember Harley talking about jones mentioning he wanted to go home the year before his contract expiring. It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that he was headed back home once his contract was up. Probably explains why we got limited returns for him with the pick offered.

Of course that’s true, but all the noise seemed to be about him being close with his family and that Sydney would have preferred to retain him.

i suspect we did well to get him to sign the first time

should have pulled the trigger the year earlier maybe, either way it was a dud deal

We also undervalued Hanners so let him go for the Saints to take care of him.
I remember when Jones signed his last contract with us, it seemed we convinced him to stay.

"Sydney’s hard-nosed street-fighter Zak Jones has knocked back heavy interest from Melbourne clubs to sign a new two-year contract with the Swans.
It’s a short-term deal but one Sydney football boss Tom Harley is confident will in time develop into a career in red and white."

"It’s understood Jones is backing his football to do the talking by only committing to a two-year deal, but Harley is confident the ace midfielder sees his long-term future in Sydney.

“Two years is where it landed and we’re really happy with that,” Harley told The Daily Telegraph.

“We think Zak is developing really nicely on and off the field and we think that he’s got a long career ahead of him with the Swans. If the first part of that is a two year commitment we’re happy with that."

With the benefit of hindsight, sounds like we wanted a longer-term commitment but were happy with 2 years, hoping he'd settle in Sydney over that period.

Pretty astute move by Zac. Commit to the club where you're pretty much guaranteed a spot, for long enough to continue your development and cement your spot in the side then wait for the lucrative offers to come through to return to Melbourne. Played it to perfection.

At the end of the day, the afl is a business and players are a commodity, so no point in dwelling on it. He's an opposition player now and we move on I guess.

Pick got us E. Taylor fwiw
Sets us back 5years

We pickup Jones, nurture him only for him to leave when he's entering his prime

We were fortunate that the kid we chose turned out to be good. Rumours Port are circling Taylor already. Great, we can be the trial run, see if he turns out any good and then he can scamper off.......

He's from WA? Why would he go to Port?

Thanks for that chart -- that to anyone who complains about the northern academies. NSW and Qld have half the population and contribute 11% of the players.

We have a reasonable record in retaining players against the go-home factor, even post-COLA. Jones has a lot of pace but honestly you never know where his disposals will end up. Maybe for that reason he's better in the mids than running and carrying off halfback.

I'm guessing other teams get caught up out players leaving. Just feels incessant, either we are complaint about Jones, Mitchell, Membry, Nank, even Cameron, talk about sour grapes. Has no other team lost a player they wanted to keep? Is it only Sydney.
Brisbane, Gold Coast and Adelaide say hi

I don't think I've thought during a game this year gee I wish we had Jones. He gave us some run but he butchered it a fair bit. Solid player but easily covered by others

you reckon? watching guys like clarke, florent butcher it, and then bell, cor etc getting a game, much rather have jones

Jones would be nice given the more aggressive way we have played in recent weeks but I do not miss the 50s he would give away. And he wanted to play more inside mid, he still wouldn't be doing that for us

I'm sorry, but FFS! Why can't someone express an opinion here without being derided
