He was an unused sub round 1 and sub round 4 but came on.

You dont agree that GWS recruiting team has drafted too many mids?

And they seem to lose one ever year. Quite often for unders. That has never happened?
So he wasn't the unused sub last week then? If he was the sub in the first week, the sub who played last week and has played every week otherwise then he's a best 23 player in his second year. He's playing virtually every week, why would he come here for more opportunity? So he can sit behind Simmo's credits in the bank crew? So he can play off a flank while we force Gaff into an inside mid role?
GWS has drafted too many players to keep pretty much every year of their entire existence, it's the way they seem to operate, doesn't mean we're going to be able to screw them

Question about our recruiting. Will Brodie and Nicolas Martin. Freo picked up a great inside mid in Brodie, and he has been handy to cover for Fyfe. The bombers picked up Martin as a rookie in the pre-season draft despite Martin training with us.

What are the issues with our drafting and our inability to highlight midfield talent despite it literally training within the group? What key attributes do our recruiting value when regarding midfield talent?

We don't go the easy most likely option ....but Martin is looking a sizeable miss but we move on and Martin is 192cm forward / midfielder.
I'm over it now trained with us two years ago and this year we missed twice !!!
But we move on ...

With that sort of perspective i'm glad you're not at the club. Nicnat is the heart and soul of the club. You don't just abandon players like that. Particularly a 3 time AA coming off of back to back AA's and Club Champion awards.

Thats part of the issue, we are so adverse now to having hard conversations that we just sign anyone up. How else due you explain Nelson having 8 years on the list? We allowed kennedy and hurn to keep going, the softness to allow darling to pick and choose when he is available. Long term deals which have murdered our salary cap because someone night leave.. nisbetts son having a job … its a closed shop with jobs for the boys and credits in the bank.

Id' say we shy away from guys who are one dimensional like Priddis or Brad Hill. All our mids are ok ball winners with decent skills but also have the ability to get on the outside too. We love our tall, high endurance athletes.

Would have thought Nic Martin fits that profile pretty well based on his form so far with the Bombers? Trained with the club too?

What key attributes do our recruiting value when regarding midfield talent?

These are the Five Non-Negotiables.

  1. Did they go to a Private School.
  2. Do they have the ability to first and foremost play as a flanker, it's viewed as a bonus if they exhibit any scope for midfield development.
  3. Have they got solid character traits, so they they wont embarrass the Club with off field issues.
  4. Must have been injured the year of their draft.
  5. Need to have been rated highly in the year prior to their draft year.

After thats it's a bit of a mystery as to the attributes that they value in regards to drafting midfield talent identification.

The issue is the bloke in charge of recruiting O’Brien. We have a long enough period of time to objectively judge him and he is a terrible judge of talent. Blame should also go to senior coach who has not given specific instructions of what style of player to draft. We’ve had this stupid policy of recruiting the ‘best possible’ player at each pick without a focus on needs. Now this policy may work, but not when the guy in charge of recruiting is a mix of Stevie wonder and the fat guy who works at the card shop on the Simpsons.

Getting a game every week would be a fair part of it too. And paid more.
Also getting a game in the midfield. Bruhn is playing in the forward flank atm . Spent a bit more time in the middle but with hopper coming back that won't last

Continuing your list;
1. A real review of strength and conditioning staff (why is it we seem to have endless lower leg muscular injuries?)
2. A real review of medical staff - maybe the conservative approach isn’t always the best and active intervention is required. Fock - Hawthorn and Brisbanes medics seem to work wonders with their recruits. I reckon they gained a few recruits on the back of their medics.
3. Review Beagles - is playing with team mates not of league standard helping development process. I’d think not.
4. Why is our development of younger players seemingly not up to scratch? Lack of development of lack of opportunity or ????
5. List management - long contracts and big bucks to the chosen few. No wonder they have so many credits in the bank.
Also match committee. Stop playing underdone players that can't run out a full game

We dont have 10 back pockets / flankers. And handling small forwards isnt our strong point.

Nelson is a rfa this season. I dont see him with us next season. Hurn retires. Who's left to stand the small ellusive types? Cole and ??? Please tell us which ofthis extensive list of back pockets can play on the quick smalls!

There will be a fair few others going before Foley.

If anything we need to find someone who can handle opposition small forwards.
Wonder if we can get Liam Baker back to WA out of contract end of year ..

The lack of young midfielders on our main list is deplorable. Our recruiting team should be embarrassed
It would have been nice to have a few young guys dip their toes in when everyone was injured.
All our backmen played midfield as well at junior level except Witherden :grimacing: We kind of got stuck blooding young guys there because of a strong midfield and then just left them there.
Also its where you put guys who are okay players but don't have it in them to play fwd or mid to a high level.

Let’s be positive. As it stands, we’ve holding picks 3, 19 and 21. A good place to start a mini rebuild

Perhaps we could trade 19 + 21 to Brisbane for Pick 16 + Robertson ..

Brissy possibly looking for points for F/S Ashcroft ..

Leaves us with picks 3 , 16 , Robertson , 39 ..
