And another week D Robertson gets to watch the league team play from the stands!

Ashcroft as a FS and likely #1 pick who will likely get games pretty quickly too.

Tough midfield to break into the Lions.
Time to pillage and plunder best young talent with promises for guaranteed games and back ended contracts when we end up losing gaff, shuey, NN etc

Since the start of the Victorian NAB league, I've watched a few games and put down my notes from each game.

Round 1 - Oakleigh vs Sandringham

Wardlaw (Oak) - far out. He is a beast, when he tackles you don't wriggle free. Tough little bastard, and always commands the ball. Thought Ashcroft was scared to be around him at stoppages.
He was easily best on ground, it was drizzling and he was super clean. He's got a 5-8 metre speed burst out of stoppages which is quick (But i wouldn't associate him with speed, just has a burst) and gets separation so he can compose himself to kick. His kicking was very very good, and he was making good decisions. Ultra impressive and I think he'll only get better, as missed a lot of footy.

Tsatas (Oak) - not sure where to start on him, but I'll start with not for us!!!. He's too outside and a bit soft, there were a few instances he didn't go in for the ball. He is very quick though and generally a good kick when not under pressure, but add a little pressure and he rushes his disposal. Likely to be number 1 on our list, haha. He's had some huge games since, and still going to be right up there for sides looking for outside run and class.

Ashcroft (Sand) - didn't have the greatest game, overshadowed by Wardlaw. Had a few moment of real quality where he breaks free and has elite ball use. So you can see the talent, reckon he'll get better as the year goes on.
Boy has he put some big games together since, with 38 disposals in round 2 and 2.1 and 36 in Round 3.

Sheezel (Sand) - like him, he's a good mid sized fwd. Wasn't dominant but did everything really well. Like to watch him a bit more, and see him get midfield minutes. Good overhead and has good skills and never looks rushed.

Weddle (Oak) - this guy could be the find of the season, tall half back who's rebounding was damaging. He was breaking tackles and providing really good rebound by hand and foot.

Currey (Oak) - midfielder who looks composed and has time, but it's his kicking that is the standout. Breaks from stoppages and uses the angles to find space and then his delivery is really good. Good decision maker, he'd be in the next tier of mids but has some real quality.

Round 2 - Bendigo vs Geelong

Jhye Clark (Geelong) - had a quiet game but you saw the glimpses. Looks impressive as a mid, cracks in and tackles hard. Skills look good. Next tier down, but a good option.

Ted Clohesy (Geelong) - Probably a good later pick but powerful midfielder or half fwd who goes in hard, uses it well. I was impressed by him, stood out.

Henderson-Burch (Geelong) - kicked 3.1 and had some freakish moments, very raw but has talent

O.Riccardi (Geelong) - father son for the cats and only realised upon writing this, he had some good run and speed from half back and ended with 2.1 goals.

Max Dow (Bendigo) - youngest Dow and he is tiny, 171cm! But he's very very talented, weaves through traffic easily and has good skills. For his size he cracks in too. Later pick due to his size, if he was 180cm plus he'd be first round calculations.

Jason Gilbee (Bendigo) - tall mid who looks ok, probably 50+ draft range but something there.

Michael Kiraly (Bend) - midfielder with some talent, likely a late pick but does things well.

Harley Reid - he's for next years draft but remember the name! Kids a star...
Mid size fwd height but presents as a full forward. Very good footballer, had a moment on the wing where the ball bounced in front of him and he grabbed it and stood up in the tackle with arrogance before taking his time to find a target by hand - shows good core strength. Everything he does looks a level up on the rest.

Great write up. Always good to have posts from people who watch games

So playing devils advocate and we finish with Pick 1, who do we take as an early favourite?

Wardlaw
Tsatas
Ashcroft (assume we bid)
Broadbent
Hewitt

And some posters have mentioned Lemmey, who is putting up a better season so far than the King Brothers. AsterixTheGaul and Monocle you guys seem to know the talent pool very well, not sure if you already have a favourite?

Separately if ROB leaves, who is best placed for take his role as National Recruitment Manager? Being that we are easily the richest club in the land, we should pony up and pay the tax to ensure we have the advantage over the competition to identify talent early or even invest in development possible....its not like we cant afford it!

Assuming that's a pokemon named Weddle? He doesn't look like he'd offer much run and carry off half back. Looks slow AF.
Weedle.

Develops a good defensive game after some training, before becoming a decent attacking option down the track. Generally gets passed by superior players a few rounds into the season.

Pretty early to start ranking them but Wardlaw is getting a lot of interest and is the early number 1 leader.

I’d wait until after the carnival as we have been starved not being able to see the top guys going head to head

For me way to early to start having a favourite, really looking forward to see these above mentioned at the Championships against each other and then latter in the season if any of the WAFL SANFL kids get to play seniors.

I made the comment about Lemmey, as one I rated above the King boys and part of that assessment is that Lemmey has already played seniors and did well.
Those who have read my critiques over the years will know that I place high value on a kid, whenever he is able to show his stuff against fully grown men.
It's rare for a kid to have shown that his can make it as a Colt, playing seniors and then not be able to quickly go another step, up the standard ladder.

Case in point I though that North were crazy to have selected Will Phillps before Logan McDonald, I just don't get their thinking on that one.
McDonald topped the home and away goal kicking in the WAFL playing seniors as a Colt.

For me in this order I would like us to chase and poach the following...... I would need a few boxes of tissues if we managed to lure both.

Micky Ablett: Former AFL development Manager who now is WA talent Manger and Manager the WAFL Colts Competition.

Jason Taylor: Melbourne National Recruitment Manager.

Whenever I see the name Lemmey the words 'from Motorhead' pop into my head.
He sounds a good prospect but that desperate need for mids overwhelms me. Wardlow or Hewitt seem the types we most need. Ashcroft to force a match rather than best choice.

It's always hard to compare players this early and to add a comparison but ill give it a go:
Tsatas #1 at this stage- think Josh Kelly.
Ashcroft- think Darcy Parish.
Wardlaw is a great 2 way player, tackles hard, think of a budget Matt Rowell
Broadbent is the most surefire AFL player of these guys and is a standard plodder ruck, think Sean Darcy
Hewitt is a classy midfielder think SPS befor Carlton ruined him
Lemmey is no where near as dominant as Max King was/is/will be, more a leading mobile CHF

McDonald topped the home and away goal kicking in the WAFL playing seniors as a Colt.
They did really back in Larkey didn't they. Still 1 key forward short but have enough 1st round midfielders that they cant play them all.
  • McDonald had actually played that year, dominated League level.
  • Phillips did well playing as 3rd best midfielder in a side where Rowell and Anderson took most of the heat the year before.
Maybe there was a combination of go home factor, leadership qualities and the desire to build mid outwards???

Jason Taylor is probably the number one recruiter going around at the moment.

FTFY.

Agree.

It seemed a strange decision at the time and looks even stranger in hindsight.
Shaped that draft and Sydney couldn't pounce quick enough.

Not only was it a strange pick, NM could have forced Sydney to match on Campbell then grabbed McDonald (or even (strangely) stuck with Phillips) and Sydney would have been denied a second top 5 pick.

One for the 2024 draft. I hope we have young Champion from Subi futures on our NGA squad. Played 4 senior games in the Goldfields comp last year as a 15 yr old. Quick and has x factor but on 175cm. Keen to follow him more. Monocle do you know any more about this kid?

If we have pick 1 I hope we trade in Robertson for a later 2nd or even a 3rd after agreeing with the Lions we wont bid on Ashcroft and save the Lions points.

Then late trade out pick 1 for a top 5 pick and another 1st plus a later pick say a 2nd this year or next.

Technically we dont bid with 1.;):cool:
