I much prefer Hugh on the outside then inside.. Where he can use his skills
So maybe we just go Neale, Lyons and Matho for a few weeks

Zorko and Rich can have another week off. Finals coming up.. Like to see how Cockatoo goes off the back line.
As said Rich seems to be carrying something for a while now.
Another soft tissue injury for Zorko.. You be worried

The Lyons discussion is interesting. Players of his quality and at his age, rarely just fall off a cliff to the degree he has. Likely, there is more to it and he has a nagging injury of some kind that is hampering. If I remember correctly, didn't he have a hip/foot injury in his last year with the Suns and that is why they ultimately let him go because he couldn't get from contest to contest?

We've been ok with being an average clearance team for the rest of the season

Plus we'd be replacing him with Zorko and giving Lyons more onball time
Zorko is the better/more important player team wise. But games like Geelong early on and Melbourne show we won't be winning much being average in clearances.

I'd mentally written Cockatoo off but last week he seemed more assured and a bit stronger for longer than any previous games in the ones.

Maybe the opposition was poor and it's easier in the backline but guys with his physical attributes and skills are hard to come by. I'm happy to see more of him.

This should be Fagan’s new favourite song. “Someone’s knocking on the door. Somebody’s ringing the bell …”

Dayne Zorko - The Magician
Hugh McCluggage - The Suitcase
Rhys Mathieson - The Barometer
Ryan Lester - The Answer?

More gawling is that Jarryd is still contracted for a further 2 years. Looks like a shocking a decision if it wasnt at the time unless the club needed to do so in fear of losing him.
lyons deserved a 3 year deal from his body of work over the previous few seasons

im a bit more bullish on the prospect that he will find his previous form than most here seem to be as well. only turning 30 this month and still a class player - that inside 50 entrance where he hit rayner right on the chest in the forward pocket on the weekend was mighty impressive. might need a reset preseason to get up to his best again.

normally watch the VFL games he been here and there like most of our VFL team apart from Matho/Terry. Most up and down.
Hard games to watch the quality of ball movement and skill not exactly AFL level. Some games a lot under.
So you only see glimpses here and there as scrappy.. Said a few weeks ago would not mind him getting a game AFL level.
See if the pace and skill suit him better.

Although maybe behind the ball a better spot. I always thought be where we play him when we drafted him.
You need some clever play makers, his skill and vision to pick a target still there.
I think his game fitness been down and maybe building into that now.

Although now like Half forwards we have a few smaller backs Kiddy, Rich, Answerth, Starc then Cockatoo, Madden and Carter.
I let Rich have another week off myself and try Cocky one more week. Rich is one of my fav players although looked to be carrying something.

A bit of perspective on Lyons

He is
  • 4th in the AFL for Center Clearances
  • AFL Elite for Kicks(24th) and Clearances(4th)
  • Above his career average this season for almost all stats
Who was it that said lies, damned lies and statistics. I think it was Mark Twain.

He's nothing like the player he was in his previous seasons with us and his lack of two way running has been exposed ruthlessly in the games we've played ordinarily in/lost. I was a big fan of his but just facing the reality of what he contributes to the team now. Though I do see him doing a lot of talking and pointing around stoppages.

I'm not saying he can't come back but he needs to hurry it up.

If Zorko and Rich are ready they need to play. We only have 5 games to have our best Team together and combinations tuned. I am hoping Adams was just a Corky and he plays this week. Mathieson has earned his place and pushes Robbo out..Cockatoo had his best game but his lack of pace would cost us in finals. Payne is just not physical enough. Darcy Gardiner has the experience and aggression needed in Finals footy.I love what Darcy Fort brings but I still believe Oscar is our best option with Mcstay assisting. Lyons at his best is cuurently better value than the alternatives but if he is off the pace again this week or Matho regresses I would like Deven Robertson to be given a midfield start.

In: Zorks, Rich, Berry, McInerney

Out: Sharp, Fort, Cockatoo, Robinson

I'd like to get Prior in the team but if matho says in its hard to find a spot, definitely do not want Ah Chee dropped.

I think this is it, with either of Prior/Ah Chee as the sub (and the other in the side)

  • AFL Elite for Kicks(24th) and Clearances(4th)
  • Above his career average this season for almost all stats

He is a permanent member of the onball group that concedes the most clearances of any team in the AFL.

He is also only 12th in clearances per game.

He benefits from the number of clearances we have not because he has been elite this year.

Gardiner has one good game in the last 10 or so.

Payne was good on the weekend and Andrews seems to play better when he is in the side.

Adams has looked like he has been carrying for a while and has been playing below par.

Personally I play Payne given he is the future and the others have not looked better than he has.

Gardiner is out of contract this year and if we drop him will probably move south.

People seem to forget that a massive part of why 2019/2020 Harris was so good was because Gardiner was good enough to pick up the slack caused by Harris floating off his man.

Gardiner stays in, he’s more than talented enough. He’s had a down year, but no reason he won’t come good again - thought he was starting to come good actually right before he went out again

Saw Kiddy with an icepack on his hammy after the game. Too young to have chronic hamstring weakness, I pray. If Rich is fit, I would give him a week off as he is so important to our chances.

It seriously looks like our best ruck combination is Fort and McStay. Maybe we play Oscar as FF in place of Joe. Personally Id be going with Rayner at FF, leaving out Oscar and Joe. This would give us more room to keep Matho and the other mids
You must be lonely.
Sorry what I should say is RUOK?

payne or gardiner is a line ball decision for me, i think payne would be stiff to be dropped but gardiner has a fair bit more experience over him. payne might have been shown up by 2mp but he was playing pretty much a lone hand in the backline. gardiner got the same treatment from buddy in about 5 minutes against sydney earlier in the year

im more suprised people keep floating the idea of dropping answerth, he has good defensive craft imo, frequently drops into the hole and willing to take the hit from a big key position forward trying to run into him to take a mark. one of the better medium / small defenders in the comp. also flexible enough to be able to play on a wing so a berry type can go inside / rest.

Changes this coming week: Matho must stay in for starters.

Rich, Berry and Oscar(?) to come in.

With Zorko: I would manage Zorko for the next 3 weeks to absolutely ensure he fully fit for finals.

I would leave him out until we play the Saints. This gives him 2 H&A games before the finals.

Bailey is a concern - I would manage him for a week. Send him away from football and freshen him up for Richmond.
He has lost his spark. Will do him good.

Fort was good at the weekend but Oscar is ready to come back. Hard decision.

I love Robbo's pressure when he is in the side. Him and Matho gave us this at the weekend.

We need more pressure all over the ground from all players and when tackling make the tackle strong and firm - no breaking free.

Hard team selection this week.

I know everyone thinks I love Ah Chee but just watch him in last weeks game. The pressure he brings via tackling and harassing is in my view elite. Robbo is also good but Ah Chee is quicker and they stick more. Matho likewise added a lot with his pressure on the opposition.

Prior and Ah Chee are automatic selections for me because of their hardness in the contest and if Matho is able to keep replicating his form of last week he is too. Robbo looks just about done to me and I doubt him against the better teams but he's gone better than I thought last 2 weeks and made a case for his spot.

good post I like to give Cockatoo another week down back and Rich another rest.
Although apart from Payne or Dizzy the other are locks
So even if Cockatoo does well not sure he replaces anyone

We have the same problem HF where we have lots of options hence we play then in the midfield as part time mids.

Hopefully we see now that we can't always rely on winning the ball back and getting first hands on it and locking it inside our forward half is our best bet
The team needs a fire starter to get their heads in the game and really crank up the intensity. Mitch has been filling that role - game v Pies at Docklands 2021 was a classic. But his legs are going so ..
