He'd fill which area of need...?
Attacking half back. Yeah we need heaps of those. Our biggest weakness by far. Young, Chappy, Clark, Wilson are no where near AFL level.
That was a pretty terrible description of what Wagner offers as a player by the West Australian. Here's a much better and more detailed summary of his draft profile.

I'm in contact online with a social media group called Inner Sanctum that publishes content from draft scouting reports all over the country. The write-ups on Wagner are pretty superb to be honest. Those write-ups detail how he spent more time playing on a wing than half back in 2022 but in previous years he was mostly a half back when playing VFL. The descriptions of Wagner remind me of how Tendai Mzungu was talked about at WAFL level before being drafted in that both were described as simply too good for state league level.

Apparently when he last played at AFL Wagner was considered too small and got pushed off the ball often. Since leaving afl he has put on a heap of muscle and is now very hard to push off the ball. His disposal is elite at VFL level with huge improvements since he last played afl.

I think he'd be a great pick-up and that he fills two big needs. One is he adds needed depth in multiple positions as can play games entirely on a wing and also play as a quick small defender. I think he'd give Longmuir the option of playing Clark on wing more often if he wanted.

We've lost Blakely, Crowden, Mundy, Tucker and Acres from our 2022 playing list while we also replaced another midfielder in Valente with a key forward from our list at the start of last season. While we've only gained one midfielder in O'Meara currently so another ready to go midfielder option is a need for us in my opinion and Wagners ability to also add depth to our small defensive stocks is the added bonus. I personally think will be an absolute gun if given another opportunity. His 1% and pressure stats are easily the best in terms state league players is what I've read so he has that similarity with Mzungu as well.

I'd be surprised if he wasn't way better than depth and a player more in line with the success stories of the many state league players who have made successful afl careers over the years.

Anyone know much about hamish free ? Looks like a good mature age pick up for a ruckman. Still only 24 years old 202cm 103 kg. Got the ruck role in the wafl team of the year. Hitout average looks a killer. A late pick or rookie spot should be considered. We need a ready made ruckman because if Darcy and Jackson go down 100% screwed 1A9499C5-28C1-4C5C-A067-4E07A95D18E6.jpeg

Thanks heaps for that, very illuminating.
I guess his position might be on the bench - no disrespect there. Flexible position, good ball use, hard running - they are types great to rotate through areas of dynamic need on match day. If the price is right let's go.

Haven’t seen much of him play except the peel games this year, thought he was the equal of Meek in the ruck but didn’t offer as much around the ground. It’s his first full WAFL season, so despite being 24yo think there’s still a lot of room for improvement

I'm not sold on Wagner but we're talking rookie list right? Great place to hold some depth.

Sure he may be able to play wing, but so could some of our other half backs, especially Chapman and Clark.

The biggest attribute that I see is that he has persisted in doing everything he can to be an AFL quality player. If he has earned himself an entry ticket to the Last Chance Cafe best of luck to him.

It would be quite unique for a player to play as a winger at AFL early in their career, I thought Worner had that athletic profile but it would be the exception. I don't think we would be drafting a mid twenties player, even as a rookie, without the intention of playing them.

So if Wagner's name is called out, or more correctly, appears written on the AFL live tracker in the rookie draft then he's playing Acres' role in 2023 for $100,000 cheaper.

For the wing I kind of cluster my preferred options a bit like this:
  • O'Driscoll, Aish
  • Chapman, Clark, Worner
  • Johnson, Henry, maybe Erasmus and Jackson

I think Wilson can facilitate the half backs moving there, but maybe Wagner.

I want to see Willo playing wing himself.
Break the line and take those beyond fifty shots on goal. Bloke’s made for it.

Wagner played a ton on the wing in 2022 is what all the other draft profiles have said. His running GPS stats are as good as anyone currently playing AFL was in one of the draft write-ups.
Makes sense if he is depth for Wing.

I like Harry Boyd from SANFL as mature age ruck. He is more versatile having played KPD and KPF.

Free as a mature aged ruck and Broadbent (young ruck) are also options for us down the back end of the draft or rookie’s.

We only have a couple of rookie spots and looks a lot like we are going give Wagner a rookie lifeline with one of them either via the std Rookie draft or as an SSP.

I only know what I've recently read about Wagner so it seems he's been played in the midfield at his previous 2 AFL clubs, without success. He's found a new lease on life as a HB, it doesn't make sense to move him away from there back into the midfield but that's just me.

What about NOD then? You could argue that Johnson may also have the same
trajectory.
I really don’t see wing being too difficult to fill. At worst even Wilson could play a
role, same with several players and utilities.
I think our midfield dynamic is going to be more balanced between offence and
defence.
Our wingers can be more attacking and with Jackson, Darcy rotating ruck/forward
We won’t get caught out so much on the rebound.

Willo doesn’t have the tank but his presence in the backline enables Chapman and Clark to be able to run through the wing.

Apart from Clark, Willo would be the fastest of our wing options.
Nathan’s a burst player and as a link up between the arcs is ideal.
He is already on our list and he improves us when he is playing.
There is no point having him available and languishing at Peel.
His AFL experience is undersold.

ODriscoll ran a sub 6:30 2km prior to his draft and had a year to build his fitness before debut, but I'd also raise the point that had he not kicked that goal on debut he might not have played the next game and we may have missed out on the magic.

Chapman ran a better time than ODriscoll by the way.

But I think young bodies like that shouldn't be putting in consistent wing distance at AFL level for a while.

Wilson replacement??? He'd be depth and as a 25yo rookie listing, thats not a bad thing - improves our overall list strength. I haven't seen him play but I presume he's a better AFL option than any of the guys we delisted this year.

FMD we are 1 injury away from cactus in about 4 positions and they want to bring in ANOTHER hbf’er

I’m trying real hard not to lose my shit at these campaigners

This off season is a ****ing disaster

Those Wagner bros got the boot for being Tommy Sheridan levels of chicken shit
