I got on the Ginbey train because with all the media hype you know we're going to go for him

Not sure i want to use either of our first 2 picks on him though

I can understand the hype around Ed Allan. He is a tantalising prospect.

Modern afl measurable and great athletic profile. Good penetrating kick and capable on both sides. Can find the pill, which suggests good footy IQ.

Obviously the big question mark is can he move inside, which if he does effectively he becomes a massive win.
My thoughts here are there is positive signs that he can. From his highlights he doesn't appear to back off a contest and goes when it's his turn. Perhaps the growth spurt and understanding how to use his body is what will come in an afl system.

I'm keen.

With which pick?

As promised, Ed Allan highlights (again apologies for bad quality).
I wanted to watch a bit more of him, as I'd only seen him play off a wing in the WA vs SA champs game and thought he was pretty good, and like most on here after that game thought of him more as a tall outside midfielder. How the hell could he possibly be top 10!!!

I went into watching the game, slightly negative on him for the above reason. I have to admit, he turned my opinion around pretty quickly!
He started the game, inside the centre square and played the entire game on ball (No Wing/No outside). After watching the game, I'd comfortable label him a balanced midfielder with a nice blend of contested game and outside game.
He has some real AFL quality assets, kicking for one is right up there, he seems to weight the ball perfectly and even when he looks like he's pumping it down the line to a contest it seems to be at the advantage of the forward still. His kick is long and penetrating, and I'm going to make a big call but I think he's equal best kick in the draft with MacKenzie!
Other assets, speed and agility. He knows when to put on a explosive burst to get clear so he can use that kick. He uses it regularly, he can also move laterally quickly to get out of the contest. You'll see both in the video.
He seemed to get to every contest easily, so seems to have a good endurance base and is a handy marking option around the ground. This combined with winning the ball at stoppages, he can accumulate strong midfield numbers.

Two things I thought he could develop; his contested game is good but could be better especially for his size. I'd like to see him tackle more and fight to win the ball a bit more. The other, is when the ball is at his feet rather than out in front as he's so tall he struggles and the opposition usually win the ball. If the ball is out in front and he can semi bend over rather than fully, he is fine.

I'll caveat the above pump up, with I'm fully aware this game was just a colts game and not a championship game. But it's more about the ability he has and what he can do, rather than he just beat up on a weaker opposition. He did carry this form right through the colts end of year, so wasn't just a one of performance.

Based on this, I would be comfortable taking him with pick 12 as I see big upside and that potential. At pick 8, I think there are better options with more runs on the board so I'd prefer to play it safe with that pick, Clark, Phillipou or MacKenzie.

Dark Sharks, I put that little shove in there for you. I know you'd like that little bit of mongrel in him.

I am questioning why I am reluctant to be happy with us taking Ginbey at 8 and Allan at 12.

On reflection, it is probably because I did not rate either that high about 3 months ago. This prompted me to go back to 2017 and about 3 months before the draft, Brayshaw was seen as a first rounder and Hunter Clark was pegged as a early to mid teens pick. Brayshaw ended up going at 2 and Clark at 7. Looking back, Brayshaw was a good pick at 2 and Clark has been more injury prone (broken jaw was an unlucky collision) and looks like he was taken a little early but not a bust.

Ginbey has delivered in 2022. He ticks every box and I am expecting us to take him and yet it does not grab me with enthusiasm. I am probably wanting more at this pick and Mackenzie, Phillipou and Humphrey would all offer more. I would more likely be happy with him at 12. SO given how even the draft is at our 2 picks, perhaps I should just keep quiet.

Allan is intriguing. At 20 or 26, I have felt fine. At 12, I feel it is a stretch. He did develop in latter part of the season after his back injury. His stats are actually really impressive. I saw him as an outside mid who would play running half back and in all reality, he started playing a lot more inside mid and was comfortable at the coalface and with physicality. I sense my reluctance is due to him initially looking like an outside mid (which fall way down in my preference) and I failed to appreciate the transition. So long as we nail 8, I could live with Allan at 12.

We also get another bite at the mids at 20 and 26 so I will try to hold judgement until our 4th pick.

So as a pairing at 8 and 12, it feels uninspiring. I would rather a Mackenzie/Hollands and Allan pairing at 8 and 12.

So in overview, I am going to step back and wait. Nervous as I do not trust the Pieman picking midfielders. Good in other areas but his track record on priority and what I like in mids and what he picks in mids differs greatly

I don't think we would pass over Allan @ 12 (13) if the draft went as above

I can definitely see us taking Clark, and maybe we bid on Davey @ 20/21 to knock out the Bombers pick in between our 2 in the 20's.

Also, whilst I'm very much in the camp that we need a key forward - Jefferson just seems uninspiring and maybe somewhat similar potential to guys who will be available later in the draft. Very interesting that the names often mentioned on here pretty much all go in the top 12 in their phantom, leaving us with a tricky decision at 13 (KPF, Allen, one of the 2nd string mids in Holllands/Hotton, HBF, small forward).

On the flip side it is going to take 1 bolter or reach to push one of those players out to our pick (it may be that we reach for Allan @ 9 then push one of the remaining 4 out to 13).

I'd think there will be at least a couple of surprises from pick 6/7 onwards to our pick 13.

Is Gilbey just another Witherden? Broken leg and all

Dewar selection for them? The pick should come in a handful of spots with f/s bids

The more you look at these mock drafts the more you realise pick 5-8 is a real unknown and will shape the draft for us. The media seem to have no inside information and are guessing as much as us

That’s a smart trade by Fremantle. Pick 43 for what’ll be a pick in the 50’s next year. I’d hoped we might have looked at doing that trade as North were unlikely to be using that pick so were always a chance to give it away cheap

Also kinda annoying that they got 43 as part of the mega trade

Gives Freo 30,43,44,67

Pre 40 seems a bit early to be selecting Dewar

Clark at 9. We were looking at him when we had pick 2. Dream scenario for us getting a pure consistent midfielder with leadership qualities. IMO other then 32 year old Shuey we don't have anyone that screams out future captain/leader in the middle of the ground.
