While I agree with you on George (Imo our 2nd best mid) I think you'll be surprised by Cerra this year. Struggled with form after quite a bad stint of Covid early in the year and a couple of minor injuries to his knee and hamstring from what we heard. Still growing into his body but he certainly shares the team first defensive mindset that George does, just isn't quite at Georges level yet.

And yes, I agree that it doesn't sound very Swan-like but honestly with some of the crazy stories about Ess and Stk offers to him and Cornes yelling from the rooftops he's the next million-dollar player in the AFL I don't know what to believe anymore. All I do know is I've watched every game he's ever played for Carlton and he's simply not a great, nor a good player at this stage in his career. Perhaps recruiters know a bit more about injuries he's had to play through and things and expect him to explode with a healthy pre season... I just don't see it.
We are the club that player managers leak stories about to the media when players are out of contract. Sure to inflate their contracts.
We do not offer contracts over eight years anymore unless players are willing to play on after that contract. It is very strict.

The hype on TDK far exceeds the output.

Article in the HSun the other day stated;
But we know the trajectory he is on. De Koning has superstar qualities. It has been seen in his brother, Sam, at Geelong.

Firstly Sam is 18 months younger than TDK.
They play different positions and surnames are not necessarily a good guide (see Adam & Brett Goodes).

Last season TDK averaged 17HOs a game, a goal every two games and 7 effective disposals per match.

Ladhams is 18 months older but basically over their careers has TDK covered across the spectrum;

I honestly think we are seeing the halo effect from Sam, with regards to Tom.

TDK is a handy player, but speculation (admittedly from Scoop McLure) that we are potentially offering him an 8 year contract seems crazy to me.

TDK is the right sort of player we need but nothing has suggested he is a 1 mil pr yr, 8 yr contract player.
Problem I'm having is that initially I was seeing him as the third tall/ruck cut out that maybe Amartey was struggling to be and that Edwards is still a ways off. In that role I was quite enthusiastic as he struck me as a reasonable get. As a ruck, not so much, certainly not for big $ or long term. If he's the best KPF available to trade I doubt we will. Too much hype. For big $ I think there are better around, even if we have to overpay.

It's going to come down to how his contested marking comes on this year.

Not opposed to taking a bit of risk for a 10 year player. And it's the type of contract that gets elite players to Sydney

But has to be top 20 in the comp for contested marking, kick goals and chop out ruck.

The hype makes me think this isn't actually real. It just sounds too much. They're just using us to increase his value.

Swans openly said Amartey and McLean haven't proven though. So this would make sense for a KF role.

We also said we keep these things quiet so to not upset the players. IF a player said it in guessing it was tongue in check and not based off actually information.

I think his contract negotiations will get going after he shows his level this year, which will be critical.

Obviously we'll ask the question if he continues to develop

For close to a mil I want a top 10 contested mark

TDK landed as many contested marks as Buddy last year, 29, with 4 games less

Equal 25th in the comp
Buddy is not a particularly good contested mark, let alone great. #42 last year av 1.27. TDK #23 av 1.53 is OK.
Better to compare with someone who is pretty darn good. For example Aaron Naughton #8 av 1.91. The gun is Tom Lynch av 3.26.
Maybe more of an issue - Tom kicked 4 goals in 19 games.

That's exactly the point I was going for

I'm not sold on tdk at all. Yea I think he's a fine young player and will turn into a very good senior player.

However, with the sort of deals being speculated, signing tdk pretty much wipes us put of any free agent/star signing in the mid to long term. To do a big deal like this, the club needs to be 100% certain that not only is he going to turn into the player they hope he does, but also is his ceiling better than any and all future signing prospects?

I'm not sure

If your mob is offering TDK an 8 year deal I want them drug tested. He's a fun player to watch and all but s**t me he's not worth that sort of offer...

But... If your list management is serious about that, I'd happily take Braeden Campbell or any other left footers you've got in the sheds who can kick the pill 70m without breaking a sweat.
You can keep De Koning if you give us George Hewett.

I agree for what it's worth, offering TDK 8 years is some truly lunatic shit let alone whatever the cap hit would be. As someone else pointed out, he's basically done nothing of note so far and is only hyped because Carlton and Luke Jackson. If for some reason he takes like a 4/400k offer then yeah fine I'd take a gamble on him, but that isn't happening so I'd much rather us target someone who has proven quality as a ruck/fwd.

Also you already got Newman off us, do you need another one of him or something?

If TDK is a $1M player, coupled with Curnow & McKay up forward …. plus Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, Hewett & Kennedy in the mids …. not to mention Docherty, Saad and Weitering ….

Then Carlton should win the next 6 flags.

But they won’t.

Because if you’re in the navy blue, you’re often over-hyped.

Carlton are full of players who are the very embodiment of the 2020s star player: they blow up the stats sheet every week, great for your Fantasy team, good for flashy plays and highlights.

If only those things actually won you games of footy.

If I'm a coach coming up against Carlton, I'm putting Walsh, Docherty, Cerra and Saad in my Supercoach team and then sleeping very easily knowing they won't do much damage to my actual team.

They've invested in a lot of these types (Zac Williams, Jack Martin, Zac Fisher are others) and it wouldn't surprise me if they have overpaid. Whether that leads to a De Koning being squeezed out, I think it's possible, but I'd want more than Sam McClure's intel, and some actual form from to warrant the hype from De Koning himself before I entertain the prospect.

Newy is getting a bit old these days. Doesn't quite have the same pop in his kicks anymore

This sounds really true. Obviously Scoop was on the field at the time to hear one of the Swan juniors (who is obviously privvy to the recruitment team's confidential negotiations) say this to TDK. Also, while he was sprinting after the ball and trying to pick it up he must have mentioned that the deal was going to be over 8 years. This must have pleased TDK no end because during Geelong's practice match last weekend one of the junior players was going up for a mark when they heard him say that Geelong was only prepared to offer TDK a 5 year deal.

I thought is was very funny listening to Liam Pickering's nickname for Sam McClure. Says he doesn't even know how to scoop a story. Called him Dollop because he is not the full scoop. Says it all really.
