Pretty apparent from Gather Round that the club is more concerned about time away from home than air miles.

Maybe the fact Adelaide is a shorter flight than the other capitals had some bearing on that, maybe the decision would be different if it was two straight games in Brisbane, but they had a good opportunity to extend an away trip for a week and they decided to come home and go back.
Again. Pavlich and Kade Simpson played about the same number of games. Pavlich travelled more than seven times further.
It has to have some impact. Has to.
Some discussion with the AFL is warranted to reduce the travel for WA clubs. Or mitigate its effects. Hubs (two games in six days), no Tas games, game time to allow same day return flights, or whatever else may help.
I think it’s feasible that a Vic club with an identical list to us would not be suffering as dramatically as we are. May not be a big difference but it’s feasible that travel is one (of many) factors. Especially for older players.

Worth a chat, but the responce will be dont join the AFL. The club needs to be more creative.

I always remember having a Laurence Schache footy card (for some reason) and on the back it said he kicked 25 in a game for someone once.

I have always remembered that lol

He passed away a couple years ago

He also kicked the final goal after the siren in the drawn Brisbane Bears v Eagles game on the gold coast in 1992.

No I'm pretty sure that was Ray Windso... I remember cracking a big crying tanty that night as an 11 y.o

It’s probably due for review, along with a whole host of other things, as our list transitions.

Totally understand the family first policies when most of our list (if not half then close enough to) have kids. But we are refreshing the list now and a significant number of dads will be replaced by 18-20yo’s who are very unlikely to have kids or be having kids in 2-3 years.

It’s clearly less of an issue to hub without the family commitments compared to with them.

Coaches - if some need to pop home for a couple of days during hubs we can manage, even the odd senior player if necessary (not ideal), but the conversation should be put back on the table as we start to field a team where at least half of the players are under 24.

Age when each of those players signed their big contract and age at contract expiry in brackets :

Yeo - 24 (31)
Gaff - 26 (32)
Darling - 27 (32)
McGovern - 26 (31)

I don’t think any of those are terrible tbh

Free agency has skewed the market such that the best players can absolutely cash in when they’re approaching FA with long term contracts on big money

I don’t think club’s particularly like handing out 5+ year deals but the market dictates that despite the obvious risks. At least we haven’t got multiple 7 year deals on the books like Melbourne, Carlton and Richmond do

We’ve been unfortunate in that all of McGovern, Shuey and Yeo have had injury plagued seasons since 2020 - acknowledging that mismanagement has played its part in that unavailability. Those players were durable prior to signing their contracts

One of the main reasons we ended up with these players on long term contracts was salary cap issues. It would’ve been hard to keep all of these AA players on short term contracts as we would’ve had to pay them more so instead we gave them longer contracts so that salaries could be smoothed. Again it’s one of the downsides of having a successful side for a long period of time.

Gaff’s contract in 2018 was 2 years with a 4 year option - offered at a time when he was all but ready to sign a long term deal with North. (We would have received pick 20 as FA compo). He exercised his option in 2020 and as I posted was top 3 in the B&F in 2020 and 2021. Hardly out of form

Are you saying Gaff is hardy out of form, that implies he’s output is equal to what we are paying him?

I agree with most of that post btw but as I posted before it’s the collective of those contracts I have a problem with.

We didn’t look at it subjectively and think “what happens if 3 or 4 of these contracts bite us on the ass”. Let alone 6/7 like it has this year.

I love your work dude, and it’s nice to be slapped down by the best hahaha.

If some of those draft picks after 2018 say Foley and XON in another universe are top 30 players in the comp we wouldn’t have had enough capital to keep them. Even if we didn’t pay overs for Kelly.

It was a chips in call that our club got swindled in to by one and only Mr Young.

Think he was saying that Gaff was hardly out of form when he signed the deal or when he triggered the extension.

Quote from Paul Fitzpatrick

“While the injury list has clearly been a major factor in our battles this season, with the majority of those being collision injuries, we have experts helping us look into the situation to see whether there are specific reasons behind a number of the soft tissue injuries that have occurred.”

Well the club finally gives us something. Will they say anything about the findings is the next question?

I don’t care either way whether it is just pure bad luck or there is an issue but I do wish the club would give a little more information.
