I thought the WAFL highlights from last round showed a little of what Chesser can bring to the side in the future.

He tried to take the game on and I hope he can get an extended run at it. It will build his confidence a lot in his body and that might bring his game on too.

I saw that too. Perhaps that is why has remained in the WAFL rather than being selected to play the Pies.

Humphrey already extended for FOUR years at the Suns, has been unbelievable in his first few games

Starting to seriously doubt our draft recruitment / scouting team, if I wasn’t already

Let me get this straight. An extension from another team has you further doubting our recruitment team? Let some time pass bud, you could get a job in vfl media with your knee jerk reactions.

So you’re saying West Coast was the only club REALLY interested in Ginbey, the rest were only playing games and he was a reach for us?
I didn’t say that. But that’s what dinnaz was saying with his spreadsheet.

He wasn’t drafted before your first pick. I can’t remember if he was linked to any of the other clubs after your first pick.

My responses were to people who were saying they didn’t understand dinnaz’s spreadsheet.

If you want to ask my personal opinion, that’s different.

Bailey McDonald debuting for Hawthorn tomorrow after being taken with pick 51 last year.

Starting to seriously doubt our draft recruitment / scouting team now.

You responded to me originally after I said other clubs had shown interest in Ginbey before our pick. Nothing to do with understanding Dinnaz’s spreadsheet.

Why don’t you give us your personal opinion on the Ginbey pick.

Lol. If we extend Ginbey by five years would that make you happier?

Two Rising Star nominees in 2023 for an 18 and 19 year olds. Isn't that an indication we have drafted a couple of decent kids?

You are a pelican mate only way we were getting Humpries was if we kept our first pick. You would have melted harder than Chernobyl if we picked humpries coming off his knee injury. Yes he might be better then Ginbey and Hewett but he simply wasn’t an option at 9/14

It looks like with Chesser the club got real myopic in looking for a certain kind of player (i.e. players with a bit of run to play off HB). Because we lack that in our squad. So they made a beeline for whatever player had the most of that attribute that was still going to be available at our first pick. But they forget to make sure that that player was adequate and sufficient enough in all the other areas (mental and physical) that collectively determine whether somebody can cut it at AFL level. It is all well and good to be able to provide run off HB but if for example your kicking/marking/tackling/ability to halve or win a contest etc etc is poor then how much value is the run you can provide in light of all those liabilites?

I think that is the mistake we made with Chesser. Being too myopic in going for one particular attribute rather than going for the best overall player.

I reckon Rohan saw him in 16’s and thought he was gunna be a star. Then when he didn’t play much through injury/Covid he thought he had a hidden gem.

To me it was a bit of a strange pick over Johnson who fit more of a need profile, was local and was expected to go high at the time. Watching Johnson this year he looks pretty good. Runs to the right spots and gets involved. Not the best disposal tho. Better then Erasmus so far

What’s everyone’s thoughts on picking up Paddy Dow at the end of the year cheap.

GWS had prioritised mids recently. Our recruiters at the Lions 2021 draft function, specifically used GWS as an example of a team prioritising best available, which is often a mid early in the draft, instead of team needs.

So GWS taking only midfielders!! I think you are telling a tall story on GWS only drafting mids. GWS prioritised talls.
After they had got Davies as a priority to be their captain, they also took as 17 years olds Cameron, Bruce and Hombsch and then proceeded to draft:-

2011
Paton - pick 1
Haynes - pick 7
Tomlinson - pick 9

2012
Plowman - pick 3
Jaksch - pick 12

2013
Boyd - pick 1
McCarthy - pick 14

I am not saying these guys have worked out - I am only highlighting your comment that GWS only prioritise drafting mids is well off the mark.

Much of the throw away statements on drafting for talent and trade for needs originates from the US where players are traded and paid huge dollars. Free agency also comes very early in their career. Clubs can trade and buy on free agency at will while players are prepared and used to relocating. Most often the US players have already left home and relocated to play in the college system. They are older, more mature and far more ready to relocate.

That is not the case in AFL - it is not an even playing ground. Well over half the draftees come from 1 state and there is a reluctance for many to relocate with way too many Vic Metro boys wanting to go home. The boys are mostly 18 year olds and very few have lived away from mum and dad. As stated last year by Jason McCartney (GWS List Manager), Victorian clubs have a different draft board to interstate clubs.

In an ideal world you draft for talent and trade. There are too many pundits who think they know a draft board order because Cal told them. I would go so far as to say that the Vic clubs can draft for talent and trade for needs. The interstate teams cannot.

Yeah is a complete over reaction.
Bailey is a very good player the knock on him during his draft year is his kicking particularly at goal. Already has a goal scoring efficiency of 35%.

He's terrible, good seconds player but not good enough for AFL level

our former head of football was very fond of saying that we draft talent and trade for needs.

Yes, it’s harder for the non VIC teams, but we can’t give up or it’s not worth being in the competition.

When we win a Championship it’s all the sweeter.

Humphrey has played 8 games and he is extended. Great for the Suns but WTF has it got to do with raising doubts on the recruitment team?

All I can assume is that you think he is a better pick than the Ginbey and Hewett combination meaning we should not have split the pick.

Question - how do you think Ginbey would be going with Witts rucking and Rowell and Anderson at stoppages when playing midfield How do you think Long and Hewett would be going when the have the key forwards and the number of clean inside 50s that the Suns are getting.

He looks good but he is no Judd like in his start to his career. These rankings are against other RS nominees.

Ah yes - but you have a medical team that Melbournians relocate to be under. The Springfield Witchdoctors must be doing something right.

Our S&C team are probably scaring players away.

When you get on a roll (like we did with the 2018 flag), we had 6 traded players in Redden, Yeo, Jetta, Vardy, Cripps and Kennedy. Not one of these joined as a FA

Likewise Melbourne in 2021 had 4 in Lever, May, Brown and Langdon.

Our current traded players on our list are Yeo, Hunt, SPS and Witherden. Apart from Yeo when fit (ie not the last 3 years), the rest are role players and not up to the level of Lever and May or your collection in Neale/Danniher/Cameron/McCarthy/Gunston/Dunkley - apart from McCarthy would be considered A graders.

I am sure we will not give up on trading but teams in Perth struggle to get non-WA talent relocating. Witherden and Hunt are the only 2 on our list.

Realistically the only player we should have drafted rather than the two picks would have been Cadman.
Humphrey is a great player and I think should have been taken ahead of Tsatas but Essendon went for outside run. It would have been a reach to go at #2 so we were never in a position to get him after our pick split.

Lol no, the fact we had pick 2 in the draft and won’t even end up with a top 5 player from it is why I’m unhappy.

Passing up on Wardlaw and Humphrey won’t age well short term or long term.

Yes I’d absolutely prefer Humphrey or Wardlaw over Ginbey and Hewett

Also, Humphrey is doing amazing individual things, acting like he’s relying on team mates to do what he does is hilarious.

You guys are obsessed with quantity over quality and WA players, it’s crazy
