Is it out of the realms of possibility that Port and the AFL are desperately trying to control the media narrative before announcing punishment. They feed information out to media partners, then try to gauge public reaction, then craft a sanction so that Port are mad that it was too heavy and everyone else is made because it is blatantly insufficient?

Does that sound plausible or does it sound made up?

In any case a $20k fine has already happened so it's more than that. $50k would seem insufficient.... But $100k with 50k suspended can be spun as a $100k fine which seems big, but is really an insufficient $50k. asian-baby-finger.gif

What I fail to understand is that Hinkley & Davies were both on the bench, witnessed the collision and yet didn’t question the doctor at any stage. Ken can be excused but a Football Manager should certainly be overseeing or managing what’s going on on the bench. He was quite happy patting Aliir on the back as he returned to the field.

Well said, but I feel it goes deeper than systemic pressure. You only have to look at the manner and timing to just how quick Aliir was thrown back out onto the ground and the outright insane attempt to manipulate the concussion procols by claiming Jones was not subbed off with concussion. The Doctor on his own back would not do that, let alone do it multiple times in the past. The anger from ex Port players who suffer from concussion symptoms indicate this is not simply a result of a doctor making mistakes.

The only reason Port are throwing the doctor under the bus is smoke and mirrors.

1. If the Doctor takes the fall, they won't suspend a Dr because Port can argue how dare you argue with a Dr when you aren't Drs. The old Covid Marshall hide behind the Dr.
2. If they do this long enough, loud enough and they ensure the dr is well looked after as to have no leaks, the AFL will have no choice but believe the Dr did it and put to rest a possible investigation into this being a club strategy which would open the door into club wide sanctions and punishments.

Make no mistake, this is and always has been a club strategy. Everyone knows it, the AFL know it. The problem is the AFL dont want to admit it has a rogue club by making such a determination.

What the AFL need to do is force Port out into the open. the clever strategy here would be to dish out the punishments that make Port upset enough they look to appeal or threaten court action. Which if this happens the AFL lawyers can remind Port that the onus would be on Port to prove this is Dr error. The interesting thing would be just to see how quick they take the sanctions. Make no mistake, I think they will whinge and complain but but they wont take it any further.

This is a strategy, they are the only club with what seems to be continued dumb luck when it comes to players never having concussion on match day.
Couldn’t agree more. Everything points to a culture of ignoring concussion as a health risk to their players.

Just listened to David Koch interview on 5AA, wow- what a flog, he must be dizzy after all that spin he just dribbled out. I bet Sam Mayes partner feels good about the the club.

Sounds a bit like this in my head.View attachment 1763188

Reality is, every job is done differently by the persona applying the job tasks. I think the biggest issue right now is that when it comes to concussion testing, there really shouldn’t be any room for personal biases to affect your judgment in the assessment.

The AFL should take this as a lesson and apply a new rule from here on.

So even David Penberthy is saying Port has been punished enough this morning. Shouldn't even get a fine.
Will said they shouldn't get a fine then was about to say what he thinks they should really get but then went to a break.

As people's have said if there is only a fine any of the big clubs on grand final day, even any club really can just let any player come back on now and take the fine happily.

Port are a protected species. This competition is a farce.

How have they been punished enough already? They haven't had any punishment handed down?

This is all very bizarre. It's obvious blatant cheating and disregard for player welfare. Everyone can see it. Even Port supporters can!!!, yet the media seem to be portraying the opposite. It's like we are living in Russia.
I do wonder if the media are being fed by Port. Footy Classified is a Cos Cardone show after all. Are they trying to set the narrative?

The complete washing over of the “migraine” call to avoid a concussion determination, plus the absurdity of the doctor not having the appropriate vision to conduct the HIA is laughable.

For a Crows man, Penbo is as soft as it gets when it comes to Port.

How he let Kochie get away with what he said about Mayes partner was pathetic.

More likely the AFL is trying to take the heat out it

Port have always bent the rules and done anything they can to give themselves the best chance of winning, whether it be above the line or not, on field or off field. Even the listing of Jones with a 'migraine' initially, so he could potentially be available against Geelong, was ridiculous. They should get a massive penalty for this.

Sydney were fined $100k, half of which was suspended, for failing to follow Covid protocols properly. That's probably around the ballpark. The Doctor should also be suspended.

I do wonder sometimes that, because Will and Dave are obvious Crows supporters, the station hierarchy instruct them to go easy on the Power at times. Don’t want to risk alienating a percentage of your listeners. Bottom line is this is all about ratings

Holy crap - now Damian Barrett has just used this argument, and he gets his script from AFL House. I thought it'd just be a laughable Kane excuse, not an actual AFL justification 🤦

It is obvious that, in circumstances where a doctor may be overwhelmed (omg two players instead of one!), the obvious approach is to be overly conservative, not the other way around.

Not to mention it was replayed over and over on the screens for about 10 minutes in super slomo from multiple angles.

There need to be penalties for Hesd of Football and I think the coach next time it happens.

Nope. This time.

I agree but I can't see it. I think indervidual penalties are a bigger deterant than club fines.

Somehow the AFL need to stop a scenario where a team win a game off the back of not following protocols and shrugging their shoulders post game and saying they made a mistake.

The independent doctor helps the AFL but not all other levels of football.
