Outta left field… I’m sure the club knows something we don’t. Worst case decent depth of fit. Welcome to the baggers Razz

Pretty simple equation really...

He was offered a 1 year deal at Port on their rookie list if reports are to be believed.

We wanted him but he was going to have to move back to VIC to do so. We offered 2 years to secure a his signature.

The 2 years is the price.

He wasn't coming for 1, which Port and the Giants offered.

But if it's 2 years on a standard AFL wage, and he gets a his body right...

Russell has now gotten Cuningham, Curnow, Marchbank, Martin, McGovern, Docherty and Walsh back from fairly substantial injuries and playing consistently.

But there were reports he was looking at an attempt to return to Windy Hill (who declined) mid-year, so not too much of a bridge to cross re: move.

Stumped up too much IMO for an injury riddled player for a straight up 2yrs.

So do DFA count like rookie upgrades or do we need to create another senior list spot (IE draft pick) now?
They're not rookie upgrades, and don't count as a draft pick.
But, if we have in fact signed Fantasia, then we would have 3 senior list spots left (likely 1 rookie upgrade and 2 ND picks).

3 'new' recruits coming into the squad for 2024 - Zac Williams, Elijah Hollands and Orazio Fantasia.

That's a pretty handy group of players that we spent a total of less than a 3rd round pick on.

I don't get the frustration around this one..got him for nothing on what most would assume would be a relatively low contract. The bloke can play, hopefully he comes on and if he doesn't, it's far from being the end of the world. We could do a lot worse, and Austin hasn't let us down so far.

List spots are at an absolute premium and we've had huge issues with perennially injured players clogging up the injury ward - and we've signed him up for 2 years - that's not nothing.

Russell is certainly not known for being able to manage injury prone types through preseason either.

But on the flipside if he wasn't injury prone we'd have had to cough up significant salary and trade compensation so it's definitely a calculated risk.

My biggest concern is with the string of injuries he's had how quick is he now? He's a player who relies on his speed - I hope we did some full-on medical / performance testing.

I am happy to be wrong but yeah... I cannot see him making it through preseason without a significant injury and cannot see the point of this acquisition at this stage.

We didn't stump up anything and so what what if * declined him? Dodoro just signed B Mckay on 850k a year for half a decade. People running that joint don't have a clue.

Agreed. Fantasia was traded to Port as a young and mercurial player for a 2nd and 3rd rounder.

We would likely have paid a 1st and 3rd rounder under Austin. If he was our player originally, he would have likely been able to leave for a late pick swap whilst in contract.

Can't stand the bloke. Can't stand anything that has been at that s**t stain of a club. Would prefer he wasn't at Carlton. Doubtful I will be able to cheer him on. Doubt he will play many games for us so it's not going to an issue. He won't play 5 games next year and will be delisted.
Comments like this make me sad. We're talking about someone who was once a Bomber but is apparently now a Carlton player. But it sounds like for you, in a contest between love for Carlton and hate for Essendon, hate wins.

Doesn't seem like much of a way to go through life to me, but 🤷‍♂️.

I like it if his body can hold up he’ll be in the 22 his last game he kick 4 goals in the qualifying final in the sanfl. Just needs a good run at it.
Worth a punt
We got marchbanks , Fogarty , cunningham and martins bodies right this year.

We have 42 on the list now.
41 below as per the contract thread, plus Orazio now.
So we only have two draft vacancies and need to free up a spot.

(Cincotta still in rookie group in these counts)
2023 List consists of:-

32 Senior players (+ Fantasia & Cincotta) = 34
4 Category A Rookies (- Cincotta + 2x SSP) = 5
2 SSP Rookies (add to A rookies)
1 Category A International Rookie
1 Category B International Rookie
1 Category B Rookie

So we are at 34 + (5 + 3) = 42.

Good move.. for the ressies

He effectively replaces Philp on the list. Philp never stayed fit enough to show us what he might do at the top level.

Fantasia, when fit, has shown he is an AFL level small forward.

My mate knows Philp's parents quite well and dad was optimistic that Sam would get to train over summer with a view to being picked up in the SSP draft. It appears that we have gone down the Fantasia route instead.
