“If the Adelaide Crows, for instance, if they are to go and become a top four team, what's the big question there that needs to be answered?” King asked.

“(Izak) Rankine probably needs to become a genuine leader, not just a star factor player. (Darcy) Fogarty needs to step up. (Ned) McHenry, even though he's not considered a prime mover, needs to be part of that next leadership wave.”

When it comes to a direct on-field tactic, King’s eyes are set on superstar small forward Izak Rankine.

After the gun 23-year-old played primarily inside 50 in 2023, King wants to see him spend more time in the midfield as he builds his tank this pre-season.

“The second part to my discussion was around Izak Rankine,” King said.

“Maybe the coach needs to trust Izak Rankine a fraction more at centre bounces, give him the Dustin Martin license because the ball is there.

“I think he's one of the great clearance players in the competition, but we only see it at forward 50 stoppages.

“He's only been in about 10 or 11 centre bounces for the year in 2023, that’s got to change.

“I know you want him forward of the ball inside 50 but you want him where the ball is.”
