Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

I always felt like our best moments where when he was rucking in 2022 but might be mis-remembering
In 2022 Hickey or Ladhams were often beaten, sometimes badly, by the opposing #1 ruck, Sam usually beat their #2 quite handily, often tapping to advantage, and broke even with the #1.
It was the best footy he has ever played. Every part of his game clicked. That injury in the prelim was a huge personal disaster, let alone what it meant to the club.
You remembered well.

I'll start off by saying a fit and firing Reid (i.e. the 2022 version) is a key player for us.

The problem I have with Reid is that he's way too injury prone. When he was in career best form in 2022, I dared to dream, and thought, wow, we might finally see what Reid is capable of given an extended run without injury. Only for a repeat of the same issues that have plagued him his entire career.

Obviously he'd be more disappointed by that than any of us fans are. But to me, he's purely a bonus if he stays fit, and we absolutely need to invest in ensuring we have a ready replacement in the event he does go down. Failure to do so is on the coaches imo, but I'm sure they'll have a contingency after the 2022 GF disaster.

I wasn't necessarily in favour of recontracting Sam Reid, although if he is fit it is probably a shrewd move given (a) the youth of our team compared with his experience; (b) he comes relatively cheap; and (c) we don't have a wealth of KPF depth.

That said, if he gets injured it is not a disaster. Apart from Logan, Joel and Dossa, we have Pete Ladhams and Jack Buller as well as Reid in reserve. Plus we could call on Aaron Francis. Plus it would not, IMO, at all be a disaster if we played just two tall forwards. So I think the best thing we can do to have a ready replacement for Reid is to keep developing our young talls (McLean, Amartey, Buller) and then to either trade or draft another next year.

IMO we did see what he was capable of right up unto the preliminary. Couldn't have asked for much more in 2022(Well yes I concede we could have asked for one and a half more games). Yes his body failed him but it was at the last hurdle not in season. Don't think we need to look at a ready replacement for Reid in my view its more that he is the ready replacement for the likes of Amartey and McLean. I'm an unashamed Reid fan and think he could still play a big part but realistically the future doesn't include him and he is a damn good in for the injury prone Amartey.

Lot of water to go under the bridge yet though to get through pre season. Play the intra club matches and maybe start out in the 2's to see where he is at. Very happy he has the opportunity. Rookie spot feels about right purely a bonus and body willing something more than that.

Agree with much of this. A lot depends on whether you view Reid as an essential cog in a finals push, as he was in 2022, or as back up to McLean and co. a year or so later, even though he might be better on his day.
By his own words he saw 2022 as his last chance and threw everything at it. Perhaps he was as surprised as anyone just how well he played. I'm not sure that we should expect the same again. Hope, yes, expect, perhaps not.

I see him as a free hit. Probably low cost. His best is match winning. With low expectations of him playing many games, he is a bonus.
Also, insurance for a KPF that gets injured. Guess who I am thinking about. Amartey. Amartey's best is superb, when he manages to get on the park. Reid could be his replacement.
Amartey + Reid and we have one pretty good forward in 2024.

Almost feels odd to see Reid recruited as a rookie alongside Kirk, especially since Reid played alongside his dad Brett in his debut game of Rd22, 2010. Swans thrashed Brisbane in that game, so perhaps a Reid-Kirk combo is a special one.

Sadly, it's unlikely this Indhi and Sam will play seniors together unless one or both exceed expectations, eg, Sam extending his contract to 2025 or Indhi getting a game this year.

If we could squeeze 15 games or so out of him, particularly a big final or two, it goes a long way to getting us back in to contention.

His injury history is unfortunate but it’s not his fault. I’ve always admired Sam and really would love to see him win another flag.

I'd love to see Sam win another flag, because that means it's highly likely 2024, and Rampe, Lloyd, Cunningham, Fox get one before retirement.

Irrestible force meets immovable object.

Reid is one big unit and he's used his extra long pre-season to get himself into superb nick. Reid's always had a reputation for going hard at training. Here's hoping he doesn't go too hard, but keeps himself in top nick and gives Grundy a real workout too. We can win the flag with either one of them, even without them if we have to, but if both stay in good shape and get back to their best this year we Swannies are in for one hell of a ride.

Throw in a trio of talented tall forwards, backed up by fast, agile medium talls who can play tall or small, a fleet of small forwards and hard-running goal-kicking mids, including a few who can blast goals from 60 or even 70m out. Add a midfield strengthened with more experience, another preseason into young guys, a few handy inclusions and proven combatants. Throw in a hardened backline, a young general, an old general, reliable smalls, dependable mediums, a few more talls, a hard running leaping lizard and a sly old fox.

Guts, skill, speed, desire and desperation to win. All of them know there are plenty of talented young players desperate to gain a foothold, while others are just as desperate to hold onto their spot. Horse, the master conductor, needs to channel this desperation, this competitiveness into the game plan, everyone surgiing in the same direction as a united front, a single wave of destructive force driven to overpower and overrun any and all opposition without mercy.

Swans are unstoppable

I'm sure the big $ to miss all the games and failing to deliver more often than not has helped.

Having said that his last season of actually playing was good, and whatever he gives us this year is a bonus
