“You look at their ball use, particularly off half back and through the midfield. My eyes say they’d have five of the best 20 kicks in the competition all playing in the same team, hence why their ball use is exceptional.”

I think we know who four of the five are - Errol, Blakey, Chad, Isaac. Anyone like to hazard a guess who Dal Santo has added to that group to get five? Florent? JMac?
If you go off the ABC article it should be Rampe. He and Blakey are huge outliers in that scoring per back half intercept graph. If a chain starts with Rampe he's going to find a target in space and we're probably getting points.

I'd be surprised if Dal Santo had Rampe in mind. And his effectiveness could be decision making, rather than kicking per se. Like many others in our team, I think Rampe is a good kick, not a great kick.

I think Rampe is probably particularly good at handing off to the right people, as much as kicking directly. If the chain starts with Rampe it's usually going to safely find outlets, but he's not necessarily the one executing the pivotal kick that unlocks the transition.

Not that Rampe isn't a fairly reliable kick who knows how to play the percentages, just that he's not the primary distributor but would often be feeding Blakey, Florent, JMac and Gulden.

Rampe's brilliant at those long, low trajectory kicks that travel quickly.

I think that reflects role more than ability for Rampe, and when the opportunity is there he's a great distributor (and the ABC graph showed that).

It annoyed me no end after the GWS game, when McCartin went down and Melican had to get treatment, that one of the SEN podcasts was disappointed that Blakey's influence 'had dropped off' compared to previous weeks. Of course it did, he got shifted into a completely different role. Rampe's held down the sort of defensive role that Blakey took on for years now and we've lost out on his creativity.

I think we defy their expectations on what a good football team is. They continue to look for the big leading forward like Cameron, McKay etc or dominant backmen with the likes of May/Lever.

But this Swans group more than any for a while play TEAM. In offence & defense and all the places in between. Our midfielders kicking a huge amount of goals is uncommon and their impact & influence in score involvements is throwing their preconceived ideas out the window.

It's taken them sometime to acknowledge that I think.
I completely agree!

At the beginning of the year, while we were winning, we weren't doing in the expected way... then we lost to Richmond, at which point most of those on board the Sydney train jumped off...

Both King and Montagna have acknowledged all year that we are doing well, and that we have been doing it differently... but that based on the stats from this century, that style of play was not sustainable... in my view, an entirely reasonable (if wrong) point of view based on the known data. However, having beat the dogs, the tipping point was reached and needed to be acknowledged.

Now, the stats are showing that we are shaping up to be one of the greatest (home and away) teams this century... and the more you look, the better the team appears. And that is exactly what they have said...

and one of the big elements is the attacking mindset we have as a collective unit ... there seems to be a general licence to attack from anywhere on the field, so it's not just that our midfielders can take on the game when they take possession, so many of our defenders (or at least players who run it out of our defence) can pull that trigger ... blakey, florent, mcinerney, lloyd, rampe, fox, even melican and roberts, and in recent weeks cunningham ...
it's remarkable to think we're watching a swans side evolving this way ...
opposition players can never afford to switch off, and we seem fitter, and that combination must exhaust opponents ... which seems to be supported by our ability in the second half of games to eventually outrun or overrun teams

and it's brilliant to watch!

I love the directness of our play. We achieve more with 20 possessions than most others do with 30. And it's so often thrilling to watch.

I pride myself on having pretty thick lustrous hair but this is ridiculous

Thanks King.. total respect and admiration for Harley

would love to listen to Horses story

Yep liked him as Cats skipper and think he is a great ambassador for the club now. He sounds like he would be great to work for and with in administration.

He understands leadership and lives it. Sets the example. Supports but doesn't interfere. Superb.

It's interesting to see guys like Harley, Gale, Ireland , Cook ex players who become club CEO, seems to work quite well

Still gotta be the right stuff. But, yes, the right stuff plus playing experience is a good combination. Same with coaches.
Some are the stuff of nightmares though - Brereton, Ablett Snr, add your own.

Oh absolutely and these guys who invested their time in education while playing and have the smarts bring a good combo of skills it seems.
