If we bring in Culley for Reid and have no other changes in our midfield, Trew could still easily be on the outer.
Could run with a mix of Ginbey/Culley/Sheed/Yeo with Trew sub again.
Id put Trew behind those 4 blokes.
Hutch is competing with first year players, injured players, and Brockman who is suspended for a spot in the forward line, its not even remotely the same thing
I think it represents the selectors picking and choosing when to reward wafl form.

Trew has had better form than Culley for the year and deserves a full game ahead of him. This habit of selectors to pick players for one quarter or two quarters of footy is ridiculous.

Hutchinson coming in likely means Maric will be dropped whose form has been better than sheeds this year.

Seems a bit odd because I don’t think he did anything too special last week. Kicked a lot of goals sure, but they plunked him in the goal square, really simple game. Which made sense given that he basically had no time to train with the club.

Then again North are garbage and maybe it’s as good a time as ever to bring him in.
If Waterman is out still, maybe Hutch is in for JWil and we just get Hutch to play out of the goal square again.
Should be fine to do that role, especially with Norths weaker backline

Trew is also likely on the discard pile, hes been around long enough that they know what theyve got there.
Id rather give opportunity to Culley or Hall then Trew, and Sheed is still ahead of him too.

I dont think it was an accident that Trew was the guy signed last minute when we didnt get our trade targets, hes only depth

I thnk Hutch might be in for Jack Williams, and we play with a slightly shorter forward line

If trew has been added to the discard pile he shouldn’t have been kept on the list and shouldn’t have played last week.

No matter how its spun it it’s a player who has played one decent game getting rewarded over a someone playing large string of games.

We just came off 2 of the worst injury affected seasons of all time, and our midfield is relying on Yeo who is incredibly injury prone and Kelly as the only ones over 22 to hold it together.
Whats wrong with signing a depth player who is liekly only going to get 1 year? The club would have told Trew where he stands before he signed.
Hes on the rookie list, costs next to nothing, and isnt a teenager.
Discard pile

Culley is ahead, Culley for Reid is probably our only change in the midfield

Because we could add another young player onto the list that we actually think has a future? Waste of a list spot

Saying culley is ahead is massive recency bias.

With pick 70? or an extra rookie draft pick? Come on dude youre not even trying now
Actual depth to cover injuries is way more important than an extra player who is just as likely as Trew to become a long term player for us

Its also not wrong. Culley is coming off an ACL, and has only played 2 full games in the midfield where he was close to BOG.
Culley has a lot more potential than Trew tbh

You didn’t even bother answering my question about why trew was selected last week if he is on the discard pile. How am I the one not trying.

Any pick is better than picking a player that’s never going to play or doesn’t have a future. Trew was literally a rookie pick himself when he was a much worse player.

You do realise that trew has been putting up better numbers for most of the last year? The week before last when he played with culley he was significantly better.

I don’t doubt culley has more potential. But there’s no reason why culley can’t be sub for this week and give trew a full game.

Because Culley only had played 1 game as a midfielder to that point.

Not true, teenagers are not good depth cover, 22 year olds who are solid WAFL players are better depth

Good WAFL player doesnt necessarily mean good AFL player.

Zane Trew played R4 in the WAFL (April 20) then due to a concussion at training didn’t play again until R8 (May 25) before getting a game as sub last weekend

It wasn’t like he’d had an unbroken string of good games before his senior selection

Was probably only selected ahead of Hall because Clay still a slight issue with his wrist and hadn’t played due the state game and being a travelling emergency. And ahead of Culley because Jai had only recently been pushed into the midfield for the Beagles and they likely wanted to see some consistency from him in that role

Hutchinson might only have played one WAFL game but he was playing in the VFL at a high standard before the draft so his selection is likely based on more than just one game

Trew isn’t that far ahead of them that he’s guaranteed a spot

Also doubt that Hutchinson’s selection has any bearing on Trew getting a game

Theres other players to play in the wafl other than Culley mate. Why waste game time on trew if he is on the discard pile. It makes no sense.

We are in rebuild mode. Wasting a spot on the list purely for ‘injury cover’ when we have an oversupply of senior players is ridiculous.

That’s true but again just play culley as the sub and trew full game. Rewards both players and doesn’t overexpose culley too soon.

We needed a midfielder, the only choices from the WAFL were Trew, Culley who was underdone, and Hall who still has a wristbrace on from a previous injury.

How many actual inside mids to we have on our list that are not in their 1st or 2nd year?
Yeo, Kelly, Culley coming off an ACL, Sheed(Lol) and Trew. Handy spot to have an extra depth player.

Culley has 2 full games as a mid in the WAFL, dont think he needs to be protected anymore

The concussion clearly had no impact on his game tho. Came back and had his best game of the year. His form line extends back 12 months so missing a few games is fairly irrelevant.

I mean there are still other players to pick other than hall and culley. If trew is destined for the discard pile he shouldn’t be playing unless there is literally no one else to benefit from minutes.

You raise a very good point that Hutchinson was playing men’s over in the VFL at a high level. I still think it looks strange rewarding him after one game and dropping maric for him.

Why did we need a midfielder? Trew was literally playing in the forward line. Pretty sure he attended one CBA haha.

Handy spot to have a talented player developing as well. Pointless to keep a player purely for injury cover especially when we have a mid season draft.

Two full games in the WAFL midfield is arguably not enough prep for AFL midfield.

Don't make me turn this thread around, you two.

He actually did get up the ground a bit, so he wasn't "just in the goal square" but he was a stay at home f50 fwd for the most part.
He did almost take a screamer on the wing so he does get up the ground a little bit.

Thought this was a possibility given JWill’s game and Maric not setting the world on fire the last few weeks. My guess is he’s coming in for Maric and Waterman for JWill.

Nice injection of energy and vibe given the events of the past couple weeks I reckon.
Fek that would be a tall forward line...darling, hutch, waterman, darling

Great news for the young(ish) fella and I hope he goes well but it does seem a strange selection. I don't think one game with Beagles playing with a leg rope to the goal post is going to immediately translate to our senior team.

Unless of course (and here comes my cynical nature) the club are buttering us up with a feelgood story just before selection night tomorrow when they drop the news that Waterman is in for surgery. That'd never happen would it? It has Gary Stocks written all over it.
