If Cal Twomey said it, you can pretty much guarantee it to be true. By far the best reporter on the AFL beat.
Its in his Ful Wrap: Biggest Draft winners video onthe AFL website .. I couldnt'tsee the direct link so didnt post it.

I also read this as we could have taken 30 off Freo ourselves too (14+45 for 13+30), so really hope we got this pick right
Errr no lol. If we were willing to do this, Freo would know we are not so strong on Berry and wouldn't need to do the trade.

You can also read it as Freo rating him high enough to give up pick 34 to move up a couple spots, so us giving up 45 isnt such a random thing to do.

Cam Twomey says Freo offered 14 and 30 (which became 17 and 34) for the pick. It implies it was for Berry (and they had been linked heavily to him), but I guess thats not a given.

That doesn’t make sense tho.

Cause if freo offered a much better pick than what we were offering why wouldn’t west coast just take that deal?

The only logical reason is because they think we would then take their player , Allan. In which case, they’re not doing the deal, and there’s no threat of doing the deal. So why would we have to do the trade?

There was also talk that Freo wanted something back on return which complicates it further.

I re-listened to the clip he then says re the Freo offer .. "but there was a little bit of negotiation still to be done", so probalby Freo wanted a later pick back as well.

In our finals teams we had Narkle, Evans & McEntee in our forward line, probably don't need to say much more than that to justify the Berry selection, but i will.

Yes we added Richards to the mix but to suggest adding another small forward in the draft wasn't a massive need is off the mark. Our depth was tested in that space, losing SPP hurt and when Rioli was out it was exposed massively. Besides Rioli and DBJ , we had no smalls hitting the scoreboard and it was well publicized how poor we were at ground level. We had a meat and potatoes forward line, there was no spice, no flavour, it was by far our poorest area of the ground.

You take out Narkle, Evans & McEntee and replace them with SPP, Berry & Richards and suddenly that is a much better forward line mix. Not to mention adding Luko and potentially a Shanahan/Whitlock to the tall mix.

The fact Berry has the potential to run through the midfield too is a bonus, because adding depth to the midfield rotations is always a good thing.

Small forward was definitely my first want in this draft, but i would be lying and saying i wasn't swept up in the Shanahan/Armstrong talk, but Armstrong didn't go until pick 23 and Shanahan and Whitlock are still on the table so selecting any of those guys with our first pick would've been a reach in hindsight. Whereas there was genuine interest in Berry around our pick.

Berry is a great pick up and i can definitely see why we went for him, but for some reason unless you are spitting venom at all times you lack conviction as a supporter, or even worse considered a happy clapper it's actually effing ridiculous how much people carry on all the time. It's as if everything we do as a club is an un-mitigating disaster but it's quite often not that bad. But hysteria and negativity thrives on here, but it gets a bit repetitive.

Berry will be a fine player and i reckon he plays round 1.

If Robbie Gray targeted Joe Berry and others thought he plays like Robbie Gray, and Joe Berry modelled his game on Robbie Gray, then that's good enough for me to accept we went small with our first pick and not a KPF.

Robbie Gray was part of the Port Adelaide contingent that drove to visit Joe Berry in Benalla in August. Three months later, the Power traded up to secure the goalsneak. Here’s why.

Robbie Gray has helped Port Adelaide recruit a player who models his game on the Power champion.Gray was part of the Port recruiting team that drove from Melbourne to visit the goalsneak in Benalla in mid-August. Asked then by the Power who he modelled his game on, Berry named four-time All-Australian Gray.

im confused why did we give up pick 50 to move 1 spot ahead of west coast who picked bo allen anyway
As explained to me last night, Freo were interested in him and not Bo Allan, so we moved to jump ahead of WCE's pick and block Freo who had also offered WCE a pick to jump ahead of us.

Twomey in his phantom draft had Freo taking Berry at 17 but wrote - If not him? It's a case of wait and see for the Dockers. If Bo Allan somehow was available he would be favourite, but it's nearly impossible to see happening unless Freo can get up the board, which it's tried.

Bo Allan didn't go at pick 11 as Twomey predicted. That's what threw me last night as Twomey is pretty spot on with this stuff given how much info he gets from club insiders. So when Allan was still available, I was assuming Freo were going after him.

I also like the fact that he wanted to pick Robbie Gray's mind to get better. Shows a good hard working attitude and growth mindset.

We needed a replacement "chuck"

Good luck Joe.
We've got Lukosious, Georgiades, Marshall, Lord, Finlayson & Esava all capable of playing tall forward but i must admit Luko and Georgiades are the only 2 i have confidence in but there is enough depth there and maybe a Shanahan or Whitlock slide.

Do we need a chuck replacement? Or should we throwaway that playbook. Lord is the most obvious Chuck replacement.

Gray says pick Butters - he plays a bit like me.
Gray says pick Berry - he plays a bit like me.

Voila

Now lets see them play together, like we have 2 Robbie Gray's in the same side.

Would we do a deal to help the Crows?
With Perth also a two team town, I am sure the Eagles were happy to impede and not help the Dockers.

What gets overlooked about Berry's 2023 season was he played the end of the season against men in the Ovens and Murray League including three finals and he thrived.

Berry's stocks have skyrocketed since this time last year. But it was where he finished his 2023 season that laid the foundations for his form this winter. Berry played the last six games of the season for Wangaratta under former Collingwood defender Ben Reid in the Ovens and Murray League, including three finals. Berry thrived against men. He kicked four goals on debut against Wodonga and three in a final against Albury.

He also spent part of last pre-season training with Joe Richards who would have given him good advice on developing his craft as a small forward. He is really willing to learn and improve his game.

I don't follow the draft so have no preconceived ideas about any of the players we pick, I just take a look at the highlights packages once we actually pick them.

I can see a lot more of Gray in Berry than in Butters. He's got that lovely balance that Robbie had and he's got that agility to quickly change direction like Robbie had. I can easily see him playing both forward and midfield as Robbie did.

It looks a good selection to me.
