Definitely. That striped logo was registered in 1992 and was used alongside the other composite shields.
Mero's right. Instead of stuffing around and spending money on a new logo, the Cats just adopted what the AFL had already registered a decade earlier.
Essee, that other GFC logo (left) was...
Not sure they were a straight-out failure. Bet they sold a crap load of that licensed product. But they were never meant to replace the real logos – it was just a different way of framing them. Think they were aiming to create a faux-heritage look. Some work. Some look forced.
Just Googled my way to this thread. Awesome work guys, you've dug up some real gems.
IP Australia is an absolute goldmine. Lots of 'what ifs' and 'WTFs'!
Interesting to read the discussion about copyright and trademark protection. Case 1: This logo isn't an AFL logo. It was lodged by...
Thanks man. Guess we're on the same wavelength!
I got the basic idea for mine from the Vietnamese Swans Jumper. Really dig the silhouette:
Also in the early 80s the WA Origin side was using a design very similar to the JAL logo. Thought it had a nice symmetry.:
Cool, I'll have to check it out. Had that Swan hanging around on my site since June.
Fair call on the monogram. My only concern would be that when you shrink the logo down for a newspaper etc would that detail start start to disappear?
Cheers Stormageddon. Absolutely unintentional, but I'll take it ;)
Thought about Port. Reckon they need something that speaks to the heritage of their club.
Hey guys, knocked out a couple of new logos the other day. Always interested in hearing your take on my stuff – the feedback's always really constructive.
Essendon Bombers
Wanted a plane that's fast, sleek, but not militaristic. Think it's important that it's also flying up as per the club...
That jumper's none too shabby. Dig the monogram.
Keep the info coming Maggotz. Really interesting to see how foreigners put their own twist on our game.
This is a big improvement on the current design. It's strong and imposing - fantastic work.
Might still be a bit busy for a jumper but it's going in the right direction. Making it symmetrical adds balance. The shading blocks are bold and catch the eye from a distance, unlike the fuzzy gradient...
Does anyone know where official 90s AFL club membership figures can be found?
I've tried contacting the AFL but have got nowhere.
Figured someone on this board would know. Would appreciate any info at all.
Guys, this is one of the best threads I've seen in ages. Thank you to everyone involved, especially Wizardwaffle - your work is priceless.
If you took all this info to a site like AustralianFootball.com I wonder if they'd be interested in showcasing it?
It's a shame that the self appointed...
Getting there. Port have a real tough identity to illustrate. This has potential.
Have you tried more traditional serif fonts? It might speak more to Port Adelaide's long tradition.
Am with akkaps on the prison bars. It's a really vital part of the Port story.
Great job so far!
Sorry, I don't quite get your point. Are you against a Dees/Kangas merger or supporting it?
Kennett supported a Hawthorn merger. He's bullying North and Melb into a merger they don't want, using "branding" as a justification. I'm just saying that any talk of mergers being good for a team's...
Kennett was specifically talking about the merger creating a "strong Melbourne brand". Branding is more about winning footy games.
Footy's cyclical. You can't win forever. What happens when a merged North/Melb team falls off the pace? What happens when they have a string of years near the...
Merging Melbourne clubs is a massive mistake. Kennett said a Dees/Kangas merger would create a strong Melbourne brand... actually it would do exactly the opposite.
Good brands are never a blurry compromise. Good branding is about being different, not blending in with the competition. Strong...

Great effort by 7. Much more energetic format.
Camera angles much better than last year - none of those baffling long pans from the top of the grandstand.
Enjoyed BT and Lingy. Didn't think...
Overall I think the message is right.
The graphics are a bit dodge and I'm not sure they got the most electric game highlights. But selling footy as the big league, our national game, is exactly the right hook.
It's a pity they undermine that whole strategy by using 'AFL' instead of 'Aussie...
Thanks Harmsey. Fair points.
I think the most important thing in marketing is to make sure you stand for something. Not everything, just something specific. Big noting yourself as the biggest or the best isn't the same as creating a defined position in people's minds where you actually stick...
Ripper tumblr!
The Crows review is spot on.
One of the most poorly rendered sports logos going around. It's like they traced the Baltomore Ravens NFL logo with a blunt t*rd.
Amazingly not the worst jumper ever worn by the Crows... their SANFL heritage shirt had more colours than a Magic Eye...
Australia's Game is exactly how the game should market itself.
Sure, it's borrowed from the NFL and their 'America's Game' documentary series.
But it speaks to exactly what Aussie rules is all about. It's about the game's heartland.
If it's going to take root though the AFL need to back...
I like the idea. Doubt it will ever happen. We're a pretty conservative bunch when it comes to AFL uniforms.
I've knocked out some mock-ups of what every team's jumper might look like if they had player names on them. Check them out here...
Re: 2012 Membership - 4,635 [at 14/2]
Not sure why the Giants need to 'send a message' to the NRL. Their job is to win games and give their all for whoever chooses to support them. Win games, win respect, stand for excellence and the rest will follow.
The Melbourne Storm have meager...
