Chad Warner
When the Sydney Swans swept up Chad Warner with pick 39 at the 2019 AFL Draft, they secured a youngster with an insatiable appetite for the contest. Warner attacks the ball and opponents with aggression and is relishing calling midfield bulls Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker his teammates at the Swans. Warner impressed for Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 touches (50 per cent contested), 3.2 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game. He also tallied an average of 27.1 disposals, 6.4 clearances and 7.4 tackles per match at Colts level for East Fremantle in 2019. He earned his AFL debut against Richmond in Round 6 of the 2020 season, recording eight disposals and two tackles.

Chad Warner
DOB: 19 May 2001
DEBUT: 2020
DRAFT: #39, 2019 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Willetton (WA)/Aquinas College (WA)/East Fremantle (WAFL)

Can't believe McKirdy actually wrote this:

It’s why many believe Sydney’s best option could be to offer Warner a two-year extension that will see him through to free agency at the end of 2027 and allow him to return to WA from 2028 onwards.

So what he's saying is we should extend him, then let him walk for a late 1st round compo pick in the 1st compromised Tasmania draft, rather than potentially trade him for multiple picks earlier...

He would be a restricted FA, so we wouldn't necessarily have to accept a compo pick.

But if he is going to extend for only two years, then it needs to happen soon.

Because if we go through all this media speculation well into 2025, it's going to stuff our season. And if he only extends for two years, then it will all start again by midway through 2026.

If Swans did that to a top Victorian player we'd have every Vic media outlet demanding action, and a two year trade ban from the AFL.

The manager is supposed to do that, and keep it hush-hush.
I expect Damian Barrett's "The Eagles must get this deal done now..." article some time in the next few weeks.

Ohhh wait no he doesn't give a shit cause it doesn't involve a Vic club, that's right.

This is going to go on all year, isn't it?!

If he leaves and then it turns out that we knew all along he was likely leaving, but chose to hold him anyway rather than get a great deal in a super draft, that will be close to a knockout punch for me with this club.
Why would Warner have left this year, and cost his new club two early first round picks, when he can go play with their picks, and give up one late first (take it or leave it) next year?

I mean he doesn't seem like the brightest fella in town, but I reckon he can figure that out.

We'll take pick 15 and he'll go to them as it seems to me only Tigers will be between WC and Warner in the preseason draft.

We can then either use the pick or trade it for points on academy picks - presumably on kids that don't want to leave.
All in all having Warner a good investment even aside from some great play.

I just hope he is played in a manner that sees him hunting the ball and not waiting for it this year. After that he can go live his life elsewhere if he wants, and I really couldn't care less. We need to stop acting like jilted lovers every time a player wants to return home to friends and family. It's absurd.

I am sure Chad's girlfriend would have loved the conversation where he said he wasn't asking for a trade because he didn't want west coast to give up a good draft pick for him.

I don't think he would care less what the deal is that gets him home if it comes to that.

I dunno what price there is to drum up.

If he walked into Harley's office tomorrow and said he wanted to stay, he'd walk out one of the highest paid players in the league in an hour.
I don't think I'd be so readily assuming that we can afford to make him one of the highest-paid players in the league. Maybe that is what the issue will be.

I didn't say from who, but if he plays Freo, WCE and Swans off one another he'll get the best deal around

I think for players like Warner you find room.

Fremantle have a lot of really highly paid players as well and there is no suggestion that they aren't going to be able to make a really healthy offer.

Who knows when we can't see the salary cap, but I think we would easily be able to offer Warner north of $1mil a season. It wasn't that long ago we were throwing cash around town like Floyd Mayweather at Naughton and TDK.

When Buddy approached us we found room. Warner will be no different

Why though?

Everyone knows the WA teams will be chasing Chad, similarly clubs will be talking with players such as LDU, TDK, Rowell & Finn Callaghan, all who are out of contract at the end of 2025.

Occasionally hush-hush meetings (eg us with Franklin who the AFL wanted at GWS) make sense, but generally speaking I think the acceptance of player movement and, where applicable, free agency has changed the landscape and that there is little need for few, if any, clandestine meetings these days.

During the season just finished Clarkson actually came out and named Parker, Rampe, Viney, Wines and Callan Ward as players he potentially wanted to bring to NM. All who were in contract at the time.

Assuming Chad did in fact play golf with KJ and Don Pyke, as far as I'm concerned, so what.

He'll listen to offers from us, Freo & WCE and then make a decision, irrespective of whether he meets WCE reps on the golf course, at a restaurant or in an underground bunker.

If "finding room" ends up costing us depth, then it's not worth it. The club's been frank about its retention strategy in recent years whilst a handful of other players re-signed for less than they could've got elsewhere. These measures are clearly about trying to keep a quality list in-tact to contend for the next however many years. To then let one player basically bend us over would be somewhat counter-productive to that ethos the club's had the last few years.

I think we worry way too much about the money thing.

Does Warner want to stay in Sydney or does he want to go home? If he wants to stay, we will make him a really strong offer. If he wants to leave, West Coast or Freo will do the same.

Maybe we have to let someone like Campbell go or Lloyd finishes his career at another club. I know who I would be choosing if it came down to those three. Or maybe we don't have to lose anyone and we can still offer Warner a lot of money.

Go for the maximum cash Chad. If it’s us great, if not, money talks. Life in footy is short so make hay. Never know, One day you’re an AA, next day you’re laying 1 tackle in a grand final.

Not like there’s a dynasty here to take less moolah for.

There’s just no need to be meeting with other clubs

In today’s world everything can be done over zoom. He would know playing golf with the eagles would get out and mount pressure on the club.

I understand he was not to know but at the end of the day timing is everything , whilst the club is dealing with a shock “resignation” from horse , the star player is playing golf with oppo admin

Disagree, it’s a Great strategy by Chad ! Make us nervous and panicked so we fork out > $1m per year. Next up he should go out to the Burswood Chinese restaurant with the Freo team and post a few on Insta.

His job is to extract as much cash as he can while he can.

Regardless he is still under contract with Sydney this stuff is inappropriate to do and reflects poorly on him.

His doing his due diligence, well within his rights to do so, and if I was his manager I would be telling him to do the same.

No different to testing out the waters if you're at a workplace

Nah, if another company calls me up and goes "hey while you're in town we want to take you to dinner and talk about your future" you know I'll be going to that dinner. Hell, I've even done it! Doesn't mean I was unhappy at my job at the time, but it never hurts to be wooed.

Its like Harley Reid going to Geelong and meeting with Geelong personnel.

Warner wasnt even here during Jack playing career.
