Chad Warner
When the Sydney Swans swept up Chad Warner with pick 39 at the 2019 AFL Draft, they secured a youngster with an insatiable appetite for the contest. Warner attacks the ball and opponents with aggression and is relishing calling midfield bulls Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker his teammates at the Swans. Warner impressed for Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 touches (50 per cent contested), 3.2 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game. He also tallied an average of 27.1 disposals, 6.4 clearances and 7.4 tackles per match at Colts level for East Fremantle in 2019. He earned his AFL debut against Richmond in Round 6 of the 2020 season, recording eight disposals and two tackles.

Chad Warner
DOB: 19 May 2001
DEBUT: 2020
DRAFT: #39, 2019 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Willetton (WA)/Aquinas College (WA)/East Fremantle (WAFL)

Could be a dud at a high pick. I don't get the logic of giving away an elite player in the premiership window for a speculative youngster. High risk/low reward.

I have said I'd keep him if it's 3 years plus, that's reasonable as it gets us out of the Tassie drafts and that's the key. I'd be practically trading every asset attached to those drafts. I hope both drafts are duds so Tassie don't get the GWS stake. I'd take 2 years with an option (clubs favour with a higher salary on his end) though as a compromise though.

I have never said trade the bloke in all circumstances, but we HAVE to be smart, we just do. This is paramount here and whatever we do we have to strategically be smart

Strategically smart is not trading an elite player in a premiership window imo. Our club has shown it develops elite talent from later picks. Warner is one of them.

The value of the potential high pick players against Warner's 2 years of potential elite service. I'm taking the known commodity in Warner every day of the week.

Tasmania aren't going to get was GWS got, but it still makes no difference to Warner's value.

If West Coast's first pick was closer to 10 than 1, then it is up to West Coast to add extra stuff to the trade, whether that is future picks or players.

And there is every chance West Coast's first selection in 2027 is still a top 5 pick anyway.
This is from a media report last year (noting nothing is final until it's final):

“My understanding is the big difference is that they’re going to get very similar draft concessions — it might be picks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10 and 11 — but they’re going to have to trade away multiple picks to land established stars."

And from a 2023 report: "The Tasmanian team will have four or five first-round draft picks in three drafts from 2027, but will have to trade some of those picks to bring in experienced talent."

I'd take the latter IF he guarantees he won't leave during the Tassie drafts that's the caveat. Don't want any picks in that draft, and I don't want to take picks 2-3 years into the future after Chad arrives. That would be even worse.

We sort of do agree, I just have a caveat with when he does decide to go home. I'm actually fine with him wanting to go family is more important than anything I don't blame anyone so long as there is an ounce of honestly (note Judas honesty).

That is all well and good until the AFL realise no 'stars' want to play for Tasmania and they would just end up giving away really high picks for list cloggers.

But it still makes no difference to what Warner is worth in a trade. Tasmania could have the first twenty picks and it wouldn't change anything.

West Coast would then have to use both of their future 1sts, at least, to get a deal done.

And Warner might change his mind and decide he wants to go to Tasmania on 3 million a season, and we end up with pick 1.

I don't blame any fan for having faith that he will stay, but I don't know that there is any actual evidence to suggest he will. On the contrary, the meetings with WC, the house, the appetite of both WA clubs, the lack of any public comments at all suggesting his desire to stay at the Swans etc.

I sorely hope he will surprise us, but there is no reason to think he will.

Exactly , there is a tonne of ‘evidence’ to suggest he is leaving and nothing but blind faith to suggest he is staying .

IMO the club already know he’s leaving . Of coarse I hope I’m wrong and he signs a 10 year deal but just can’t see it . The club hiding him from media commitments on the media day is suss

Well the main piece of evidence that he will stay is that he has had multiple opportunities to request a trade to WA and hasn't done so.

If he was so desperate to get back to Perth, he would be there right now.

I think he’s probably more likely to go but we are still better off having him stay for even two years. Completely agree with Tom & Nugz. His value won’t change. The WA clubs will have to find a way otherwise Tasmania will just take him in a PSD. We’ve already got great value out of him anyway and the game is about winning premierships not trade week.

My only caveat with a short term deal would be are we just going to have all this bs speculation for another two years. In that case, we might be better off saying no.

But moving him this year because we are worried about the return in 2027 doesn't make any sense. We might end up with pick 10 and a future 1st instead of pick 5 and 25. It is really no different, plus we would have had Warner for 50 more games.

Why are players doing this? Surely Warner saw the stories about Kozzy's recent social media activities, yet he still chose to like this post.
He must know the hysteria it will cause when the socials pick up on it, even though the club did its best to hide him from media commitments on the media day and he still decides to draw attention to it . I know it’s not a massive deal , but is a bit of a slap in the face to the club who are trying to keep a lid on it , and he’s just drawing attention to it

I've thought it likely for some time that Chad would be off to WA at the end of the season.

I had no particular problem with the ongoing speculation or he openly meeting with the WA teams.

There may be context, with regards the IG like, we are unaware of (although it's hard to think what circumstances they would be).
But this on the face of it is extremely disappointing.

And to be honest extremely disappointing actually understates my feelings.

Players leave clubs, for better opportunity, for more money, to go home, all fine.
But there are ways of doing it.

Sure it's only an IG like but it's hard, for me, not to view it with regards to the Swans and their fans as an;

Agree. Especially when you consider how public this has all played out. The hotels , the golf, the houses .

He’s not making it any easier on the club that’s for sure

Meh he has to do what’s best for him and his family. So long as he’s open and transparent when he leaves that’s all you can ask

I understand that . But it appears the club is trying to make every effort to downplay the situation as much as possible and he is making every effort to rub the clubs face in it

Certainly seems like attention seeking behaviour when you consider he would be fully aware of what just happened with Kozzy. It's going to make it tough for Sydney this year because this story won't go away until he either puts pen to paper or officially gets traded at the end of the season.

I think people are more potentially annoyed that he is making it very obvious, better play well.
