Chad Warner
When the Sydney Swans swept up Chad Warner with pick 39 at the 2019 AFL Draft, they secured a youngster with an insatiable appetite for the contest. Warner attacks the ball and opponents with aggression and is relishing calling midfield bulls Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker his teammates at the Swans. Warner impressed for Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 touches (50 per cent contested), 3.2 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game. He also tallied an average of 27.1 disposals, 6.4 clearances and 7.4 tackles per match at Colts level for East Fremantle in 2019. He earned his AFL debut against Richmond in Round 6 of the 2020 season, recording eight disposals and two tackles.

Chad Warner
DOB: 19 May 2001
DEBUT: 2020
DRAFT: #39, 2019 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Willetton (WA)/Aquinas College (WA)/East Fremantle (WAFL)

Bonz you and i kept the faith all along
I never really bought into the idea that he was gone.

There are more instances of stars turning down big offers from shambolic rabbles to stay at a finals contender than not.

Dusty stayed at Richmond
J Kelly stayed at GWS
Finn Callaghan stayed at GWS

Jordan Dawson is the exception not the rule and even in his case money really a factor.

He hasn't actually signed yet
It’s a done deal.
We will win the grand final by 7 goals
Chad will win the Brownlow and Bice the Norm Smith

We wanted an answer end of February, obviously has taking a little longer but we wanted to know very early
No one at Geelong or Brisbane or Hawthorn is on that money.
$1.3M is a club killer.
If he signed it for 5 years then sure but to potentially lose him in two years for nothing will do more harm than losing him now.
I’m very conflicted with this. I love him but not that much because I love the club more.
Not even Essendon do this shit. C

All the WA boys went over for the game.. Warner x 2, Gus, Buller.. Im thinking all the WA boys are having a few days at home.
You can bet your bottom dollar that freo &/or eagles are chatting to Chad, Gus, Buller - all out of contract

Absolutely, not saying Chad won’t sign, but until he does I’ll wait to get the streamers out

I tend to agree. And like you, I’m conflicted.

Is 2 years of Chad (following which we’d likely get nothing if he walks) worth more than a cluster of first round draft picks?

I don't have a strong view on it, but for me there are 2 questions;

1 Are we more likely to win a premiership with Chad or a unknown number of early draft picks?
2 Is Chad's money going to result in us losing players (eg Mumford out when Buddy arrived)?

There were a number of posters who felt we should have cashed in on him last trade period (even though he was under contract and no obligation to move) because he would have been gone at the end of this year and last year was the 'super draft'.

It now appears he is likely to re-sign (although The Age - Jake Niall is less confident).
Who says he won't go around for us again from the ed of 2027?

So to answer my own questions;
1 With Chad a known commodity
2 Hopefully the club has learned it's lesson

Or it gave them a group chance to hang out at home. Everyone loves going home to hangout with friends.
great opportunity. Chad is no exception.
Head space is one of the more difficult regions of the body to get right. Physical stuff is obvious to most around a footy club. Including and especially the medics. The head stuff is just as important and a group of WA guys going over to WA and hanging out at hope prior to a week off is a no brainer. Pardon the pun.

Like I said few months ago on here

2 year deal

He was hitting only signing a 1 year

I hope Logan also got to go and hang out

I get the logic from both sides but at the end of the day you need the best players at your club and Chad is up there with the absolute best.

Of coarse I’d feel more confident if he signed a 5 year deal but at least now we get an extra 2 years to convince him to stay long term and hopefully really plant his roots in Sydney

Still hate it being 2 years, and everyone knows my reasons for it don't need to go into it again. 3 plus years go for it and he can name his price if that means losing a Lloyd so be it, you do it to keep a star. I hate the 2 years thing just right into the Tassie draft area.

The money pushing out other players is a potential concern, but a 2 year contract gives us flexibility to back-end other contracts around it if necessary.

Highly overrated, the 1.3 million is the old 900 to 950k, the cap has gone up exponentially in the last 5 years especially, there will be more million buck players in fact we aren't too far off having the first 2 million dollar one for mine.

I'm confused...haven't other posters already commented that if we match an offer in 2 years time and he decided he wanted to go the WA club would have to pay up in picks.
I'm sure the club has the nous to work their way through the roster implications if any and structure payments accordingly. There's more money coming with the new agreements.
I love him and the club equally.
Really, a two year extension just means we are likely to lose him in FA.

I’d love a year extension but if we can win a flag by [emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]] and he decides to go home, it would soften the blow markedly.

People get too caught up in the salaries when we actually have no factual idea who is on what and who wants what or at some clubs who pays who's wife or who leaves a car or a farm to whom.
