George is mercurial….

Just let that sink in ...............................................................

A bloke who can barely kick 40m and certainly can't kick straight from more than 30m is mercurial.
Mercurial.
Read plenty of stuff on Big Footy over the years I've agreed and disagreed with - as have those reading my posts.
But this takes the cake.
Castagna ... mercurial.

The Mercurial Fresh Air Handball Specialist.

20m out straight in front, will he make a fresh air handball attempt that the opposition expects and mops up with ease,, or will he blast it like a maniac OOTF?

Opposition about to go coast to coast to change the likelihood of the result, will he zone off his man and open up the gates of hell, or will he tackle attempt the wrong player in the chain because he has the football IQ of a turnip?

Mercurial.

TBF to Dan who's playing the devil's advocate here the AFL has been misusing the word mercurial for a couple of decades now. It's often used to describe someone who's extremely talented and consistently damaging on field.
The word actually means someone who's prone to run hot and cold. Be amazing one minute and average the next.

George is never amazing though. Just flat out dog poop.

Even more confused ... like where does this 'amazing one minute' thing fit in?
George is never amazing.
When I think mercurial, I think Ablett Snr, even Jr, Daicos, Jarman .. taking one-handers and playing on and banging one in from 55, or curling it around the boundary for a goal - like Daics did 150 times. JC does not do this.
0-5 in a grand final .. go back and watch his obvious high point. On his best day he kicks two of those goals. Atrociously skilled.

Why does he get lauded for that Grand Final performance in 2019? He couldn’t manage a singular goal in a near 100 point belting. We even had a debutant kicking them from midfield.

Imagine if that game was close and we lost by single digits. Would anyone still be praising him? No. Because his dodgy kicking would’ve been a big reason as to why we lost. Just another example of his mates bailing him out and making him look better than what he is.

I mean, the word's meant to be used kind of negatively. More for a played like Stack who'll do a couple of out of the box awesome things, then be shit for the rest of the game. Inconsistent but with flashes of brilliance.
In the AFL media they use it for players like you mentioned. It's a bit dumb.
It's still not really applicable to George either as the rare things he gets right genuinely seem to be flukes.

actually think hes managed to stay in the side so long is because hes one of the few smalls we've had that (its one of his only decent qualities lol), takes marks. hoping cumberland mansell and now bower can potentially push him out as theyre all decent overhead.
That is definitely something that is he pretty decent at, he’s a very good mark for his size and often marks against bigger oppos

Shame his finishing is a genuine lottery

As a result of the bye and the freezing weather I was bored so I started tinkering in the garage with my Torana SLR5000 an old flux capacitor and a bit plutonium I had lying around. The suspense was killing me so I travelled forward to Wednesdays selection committee meeting to see if old Georgie Porgie would funally be Shanghai'd out of the team. I couldn't believe it the useless prick has escaped the executioners noose again. I knew noone would believe me so I brought some footage of Dimma at the meeting back with me as proof....... leslie-nielsen-nothing-to-see-here.gif

Castagna is a three time premiership player ( that's right THREE!) and deserves ALOT more respect than he gets on the thread. He chases like his life depends on it (which is more than 95% of players) and brings X factor and unpredictability which works to our advantage. He's not perfect but deserves a lot more respect than he is getting here. He played a key role over the premiership years that bought us all so much joy so I don't understand all the hate. Very very rough on him I think. Go Jase, I love you mate!!

That’s all well and good mate but what about his current form?
Are you really defending that?

Needs a spell in the VFL.. time to give the guys that have been in form a go
Cumberland, Stack or Clarke

He gets lauded for that grand final because as a small forward he had 20 disposals, 6 marks, 5 inside 50s and 10 score involvements and was one of our best that day. Yes it was a flogging but if he kicks 4 or 5 of those behinds then there's a fair chance Dusty is only 2 Norm Smith Medalist. Have a bit of respect and give credit where it is deserved rather than just being a sheep following the majority. Yes he's in poor form and should be dropped but that doesn't take away the great Grand final he played.

That’s fair enough but atm he’s in horrible form and has been for the best part of 2 years and hasn’t been held to account. Match committee have a lot to answer for.

Nobody hates him. We just want the best 22 in the team. We follow Richmond FC not Castagna FC.

Nothing is stopping you admiring his previous performances from years gone by but you won't stop others being rightly critical of his current form.

If you find that disrespectful then that's on you.

I can explain it for you but I can't understand it for you.
