Strikes me as a combo of David Myers and Heath Hocking.

Really liked his game and how he complements the midfield.

Geez he was good for us yesterday. He just got the ball and gave it to players so well. Something we’ve missed. Just want to see it every week now
Saw it a bit in the pre-season games as well. Amazing that he's at his third club.

Like not expecting him to top the vote tally in the Brownlow or anything but he's quite useful and you'd think those traits would be useful at most clubs.

Haven't seen the full game so hard to comment on actual output but the little bits that I did see - the thing that I noticed and has stuck with me were the shorts.

They reminded me of the way Kepler Bradley used to wear and roll with his - a bit loose. Might need to size down.
Thats 2 Kepler Bradley comparisons in one day.

Keep going!

He may be an inside mid but that game didn't really show it? He had three contested possessions.

Best parts of his performance were being able to stick tackles when needed and finding other ways to contribute on the outside when opportunities arose.
More his presence at stoppage, having a bigger body on there makes a whole lot of difference, along with his tackle pressure. Having a bigger body lining up against the oppositions bull is a win, he’ll have his day where he gets his own fair share of clearances etc

His role was more than winning contested ball . It was more about engaging the opposition so that Parish and Shiel generally had one on one contests.

Absolutely loving these bargain pickups. Was a huge Will fan in his draft year, and there were clear as day signs it was clicking for him at Carlton when given a chance.
Absolutely nailed some tackles on the weekend, but I think his real weapon is how easily he covers the ground for a guy his size. He glides across the turf instead of heaving that big frame around.

He was playing the stopper role, I'd use tackles as a better indicator of his performance

This.

Being an inside midfielder isn't just about contested possessions, it's also about blocking/shepherding out opponents and creating space for your other ball winners to get the ball and get clear.

Setterfield was fantastic on the weekend and I hope he takes this chance to ply his craft, we will benefit a lot from his presence.

Watched the game back a couple of times and he has been criminally underrated. Was probably our best 4 quarter player last week and easily in our top 3.

Did everything

25 touches (3rd at Ess)
10 marks (= 2nd at Ess)
6th tackles (1st at Ess)
R50 (= 3rd at Ess)

Back it up and he will quickly cement himself as a fan favourite

I had him as my second best on ground for the reasons you mentioned

I’ll nitpick a little here and remind you that the coaches had him 5th or 6th best. There were half a dozen Essendon boys who played out of their skins on Sunday and you could make an argument for each being our best on the day.

He will work well for us for the simple reason he does not have to play at top 10 draft pick level or Cripps level. We have guys that can win clearances in Parish and Shiel. We just need a guy who can engage the opposition a bit and give enough protection to give Parish and Shiel time and a one on one opportunity to get clear without getting mugged. If he can do that and win his own clearance when needed then he is a win for us.

Who knows what to make of coaches votes.

Setterfield played a lone hand in the middle in the first half. He did all of the heavy lifting while Merrett couldn't handle a tag (released after half time) and Parish drifted around accumulating ball with virtually no impact. BZT caused the first goal by spoiling Laverde. He got stepped by Wingard at walking pace to allow another goal and hit Hawthorn players with 2 of his 8 first quarter possessions. He then marked the ball kicked to him by the opposition for 3 quarters and that's good.

I would say that none of Perkins, Parish of BZT influenced the result.

I think the coaches fixate on how they want the game to look and that they sometimes can't see past it.

There is no evidence that ball use is considered in any depth in the AFL. I've noticed in the last few years that Channel 7 barely calls mistakes (it started with Bruce in his last few years - I initially thought he was getting senile).

It's odd because it takes a team effort for the game to look the way the coaches want, but then individuals seem to get rewarded disproportionate to their influence as the end product of the team effort. It's not the same when a forward is doing ridiculous things turning half chances into goals, dominating the air, etc.

There is then the midfield battle, mutual refusal to put any work into midfielders and then routinely giving them the midfielders all the votes.

It's a very strange thing.
