AFL Player #12: Will Setterfield - Re-signed for 2025

Who knows what to make of coaches votes.

Setterfield played a lone hand in the middle in the first half. He did all of the heavy lifting while Merrett couldn't handle a tag (released after half time) and Parish drifted around accumulating ball with virtually no impact. BZT caused the first goal by spoiling Laverde. He got stepped by Wingard at walking pace to allow another goal and hit Hawthorn players with 2 of his 8 first quarter possessions. He then marked the ball kicked to him by the opposition for 3 quarters and that's good.

I would say that none of Perkins, Parish of BZT influenced the result.

I think the coaches fixate on how they want the game to look and that they sometimes can't see past it.

There is no evidence that ball use is considered in any depth in the AFL. I've noticed in the last few years that Channel 7 barely calls mistakes (it started with Bruce in his last few years - I initially thought he was getting senile).

It's odd because it takes a team effort for the game to look the way the coaches want, but then individuals seem to get rewarded disproportionate to their influence as the end product of the team effort. It's not the same when a forward is doing ridiculous things turning half chances into goals, dominating the air, etc.

There is then the midfield battle, mutual refusal to put any work into midfielders and then routinely giving them the midfielders all the votes.

It's a very strange thing.
Ever seen or read Moneyball? Basically it looks at the industry wide group think about how baseball players were evaluated. Pretty analogous to what you are saying above.

AFL remains an immature industry in many ways.

Have been saying this for a while now. The AFL takes the moral high ground when the times have changed on so many things. Glad someone else sees this

Do not agree with you saying Merrett not handling the tag. He did exactly what he needed to do and that is pressure. Go to other players at the stoppage and not give up on the contest.
They where on top of us in the midfield for 15 minutes of the first quarter.

Just impedes the opposition. Tackles, blocks, bumps, stops the ball. Is surprisingly quick across the ground. Kicks the ball well. Clean hands. Has a serious career ahead of him now.

He might be the most recent into our midfield, but given his point of difference you can't see anyone challenging for his spot.

Glad Setters has had such a great start for you guys. Always liked him and wished he'd managed to show us his full ability. But for various reasons he wasn't in a position to (quite literally, in a footy sense). Hope he keeps it up. But completely shits the bed against us, of course.

And he allows us to play Langford in his best and most dangerous position.

Masterstroke getting him
