Is he fit? not really followed his injury we always look better with him in, our pressure in the forward half without him has been deplorable.
Is he better than George I don't see him bringing anything different. Perhaps another couple of years to build some stamina but at the moment he doesn't bring anything apart some chasing.

I hope he's chosen this week. Makes such a difference to our forwardline structure and implied pressure.
I love his pressure but the rest of his game was off this season. No awareness of opponents and getting caught with the ball too much. I dunno how our small fwds actually came back worse than last year.
Veeful for a while for moi. Clarke due a full game or 2. And get cumbo in for someone . Cotch to sub?

For a quick bloke with a great step, he gets caught almost every time.

Probably at least partly caused by the same change of game plan that has seen both ours and oppositions scoring plummet this season.

2023 points for @ rd 11 = 77 average.

2023 points against @ rd 11 = 78 average

v

2022 points for @ rd 11 = 98 average

2022 points against @ rd 11 = 84 average.

Obviously other factors have contributed like the Lynch injury in 2023, he missed only 1 game to rd 11 2022. Nankervis also played every game to rd 11 in 2022. In different ways that pair are crucial to the functioning of our forward line and they have missed 7 and 5 games respectively, plus the effect in the games in which they were injured. Then you add half the midfield is new, creating some connection issues, and Dusty has returned properly playing almost solely forward, thus allowing one less position for a young small forward. And on top of that Maurice Jnr copped his injury and Cumberland has clearly had issues adapting to the new dynamics in game plan and personnel.

Hands down has been the biggest disappointment of 2023 by a mile. He's played 5 seniors, 2 practice matches and 2 reserves games so 9 games and kicked 2 goals (1 was a charity Joe the goose). He's been a complete liability in the seniors. And in his 2 ressies games he's had 7 disposals (3 effective) and on the weekend:
Maurice Rioli (six disposals, four tackles, two inside-50s)

I never watched the weekends game but heard he didn't show a hell of a lot. In his 3rd year he's tracking horribly. And you'd think he could at least play well if not dominate in the Magoo's. It's not like the old days where a forward pocket couldn't roam too far from goals. He'd wanna start showing something cos with any other surname people would be wanting him delisted. Stengle, Kayle Kirby even Aarts looked phenomenal and a class above in the reserves.

MRJ doesn't even look like he belongs at reserves level. Some people are dreaming he'll never ever be a midfielder so he better start kicking some snags.1 sexy run down tackle a game doesn't gloss over all the times he burns 1st option and gets run down or his butchering disposals. He better not get brought in ahead of Banks.

If you just took a snap shot of every AFL player during their least productive periods all of them would look shit.

Maurice had a very good second season last year, that wasn't his name that created the most score from turnover in the AFL. It wasn't his name that slotted the go ahead goal under huge pressure in the dying minutes from 40m on an angle v the Cats.

He is a good player. He looked as rusty as anything last week after missing 6 matches, but that will correct itself. When he was playing in the AFL team this season the whole forward line was in total malfunction, not just him. He will be back. We can remind you that you wanted him delisted with zero pay.

Get him to.play a proper dangerous small role and not chase arse all day and watch lthe improvement, do we see Cameron, Higgins
Etc chasing all day no, they are payed to kick goals or create them. We are taking away
His weapons by making him a defensive forward
His weapons are his defensive aspects and always have been, closing speed, pressure acts and tackling even when he was a jr and only really been an opportunistic goal scorer off the back off those defensive efforts but never been a high goal output small forward
He doesn’t really have the tools

His not a great mark or a particularly good kick, lacks the ability to really kick anything more than 35m with any dependency unless he is on the run but that also makes him inaccurate

Not really sure what you mean by “making” him a defensive forward when that’s what he has always been

Becouse obviously that's the role the coaches have given him.

He has gone backwards from last year.
Like I have said previously a lot of our group was not fit enough or near where they needed to be coming into 2023.
This falls on Luke Meehan.

I want Meehan gone as much as anyone but he's not to blame for MRJ's woes. It's not Meehan's fault he doesn't take 1st option and can't complete basic skills. Half of the VFL are part timers who, like Aarts before getting put on our list, work 40 hour weeks and only train a few hours a week whilst eating whatever they feel like.

MRJ should be torching these guys at the lower level and working on his difficienccies. He's barely touching the pill and just plodding along with every manner of excuse made for him. He'll probably get promoted this week to cover Mansell off the back of another lousy effort whilst blokes like Banks and Sonsies wallow in the Magoo's.

Sad but true.
I reckon he needs to play VFL for a while. .
Sonsie and Cumberland went back and worked on their game they deserve an AFL game.
Selection is weird again. Young retains his spot, Miller IN.

Having said that, the team is putting wins on the board. Some challenging away games. Hopper in the midfield mix has been too much change for the 22?
