I’m certainly in the minority here but from being at the game, watching from Level 2, I thought he played a decent game. Especially considering he’s just come back from 6? weeks off with a hammy.
He didn’t touch it second half but the pressuring was still there to see. Unless they think Coulthard is up to senior footy, I’d keep MJR in the lineup as who else will provide quickness/pressure in the F50? Not Marlion, who many seem to want as his replacement imo.
He was excellent and exactly what I want from a small forward. Defensive pressure so Shai, Cotchin, Dusty , Short and even flossy can waltz in and finish off his great work.

Seeing KB in the stands for Cotchin's milestone game I'm 100% convinced if KB wore army boots and tied 1 hand behind his back he could surpass the output of MRJ in any single game this year. I'd rather Soldo play the small fwd role over MRJ atm he's been that :poo::poo::poo::poo::poo::poo:. I don't pretend I watch many games that don't have Richmond playing but if Taranto is rated in the top handful of players league wide, then I'd argue MRJ would be a certainty to be in the bottom handful of players league wide.

Should be banished to the magoo's remainder of the year to see if he can actually look like a player. Right now i'm not convinced he could dominate division 3 amateurs. Was perfect conditions for him on Saturday and he loooked completely out of his depth.

Can’t make a career out of being a tackler in the modern game. Lacks composure and polish.
We won three flags with two small tackling and pressure forwards who had low possession counts. Saturday night was our best win of the season and what do you know the ball was locked in our FL.

They both gave so much more offensively.. butler kicked 30 castagna 27 goals in 2017.

I still think junior can make it.. but he’s not up to scratch at the moment. Might be time to give steely green or coulthard a crack at it for a while.

Possibly, but I like MRJ as he’s like that famous Australian cyclist Robbie McEwen three times winner of The Tour de France Green jersey who was nicknamed The Scarlet Pimpernel by his rivals. He had this knack of sneaking up on his rivals before he delivered his killer blow coming from nowhere. Don’t wish for too much as you might get less. Junior will make it and confidence will grow with experience and the goals will multiply.

That was more a result of the rain and bog than MRJ's presence in the team. Ball was locked in their F50 for a couple of 10 minute stints too luckily they sprayed their shots. Coulthard, hell even Angus Hicks would provide more than MRJ has. I never rated Castagna or Mansell but MRJ makes them look like Hall of famers in comparison. If his surname was Stengel he wouldn't have even been listed as Emergency once this year.

No RPB we had 25 shots at goal to their 15 with not counting OOB and OOBOTF. Yet both side had near the same inside 50’s. Which means our forwards and mids were able to keep the ball locked in our Fl longer to create these shots.
it was our best win all season bc the whole balance for size and speed was right. Need more of the defensive forward pressure possibly, but I don’t think anyone can provide it better than MRJ.
Wet conditions or not MRJ is an important player to our mix as locking the ball in our F50 brings the MF up and the dangerous goal kicking defenders also. MRJ like Benjamin Miller just needs game time and he’ll be a ripper. He’s also come back from injury and still probably isn’t at 100% match fitness yet.

Best thing for MRJ going forward would be to banish him to the Magoo's for remainder of season with a long list of things he needs to work on at the lower level. They should have a serious chat with him about working on his fitness over Christmas and maybe Shai can give him some guidance about what's required.

His name has carried him this year alone. Would be nice to see him dominating a few weeks on the trot at the lower level and ironing out some of his deficiencies. Maybe they could reward him with some midfield minutes if he really impressed. He needs the reality check that bringing him straight back into seniors on the back of a singular poor reserves performances can never deliver.

You're a pretty talented selector if you can select the team for the rest of the season with 9 games plus finals to be played.

For the record though, with Castagna retired, Mansell suspended, Pickett withheld and Cumberland injured, who exactly were you selecting as a pressure forward in preference to Maurice?

And how would you have any clue about Rioli's fitness such that you can authoritatively state what he needs to do?

As for your statement about Maurice's name carrying him....do you think selectors sit down and say well we should play Cumberland here but Maurice Rioli's name is Maurice Rioli so we have to play him instead? This is ludicrous.

He's still young and has time on his side. Has the physical attributes and he'll eventually get there. His issue at the moment is his composure which is an issue lots of young players have and staying involved in the game which is an issue lots of young small forwards have. I wouldn't be writing him off just yet.

I think his issue is that he doesn't know where to go / where to be. He's never at the drop of the ball or front and square - this may be by design, I'm not completely sure.
Maybe confused with the game plan and tactical nature of the team

Exactly. Sometimes I think people on here must be just having a laugh or shit stirring because they can’t possibly think that way.

The game today will be huge inside 50 numbers our way. They've got Barrass and McGovern, our tall forwards + Pickett can't buy a mark. Can only mean we sit back and watch them get 20+ intercept marks down back or crumbs galore. Is there any chance this guy can actually kick 3 or 4 goals to inflate his pathetic score return for the year?

FFS's he's still only kicked 2 goals in 13 games (seniors, Magoo's, preseason) Shorty kicked 2 in 5minutes as a defender without setting foot in the F50. By rights today should be like sharks feeding on a dead whales carcass. Is there any chance he can actually help the team score and not just lay 1 eye catching tackle. Worst thing is his opponents are keeping him to 6 inneffective touches whilst racking up 20-25 themselves.

I agree, he needs to put his hand up today and really show something

Put it this way if name was not Rioli he wouldn't even be playing Afl

Funny how the team seems to play better when Maurice is in it. :)

You need to support a supercoach team.
