Player Watch #18 Jesse Dattoli

Another positive of the Dattoli pick is that it means Cleary could maybe focus more on trying to get into the midfield mix. He has all the right attributes that we need more of in the guts.
If it means that two of Cleary, Datolli or Sheldrick play then ill be happy. He definitely feels like the player that can impact and provide speed and chaos to the forward line

I think Roberts is another one we might be considering for more midfield time next year based on us taking Bice. Between them and perhaps Campbell, we've got quite a few options to change-up the set-up next year.

Also, just because he is from the academy, he shouldn't get the automatic charmed run that our other academy players get compared to the non academy kids. Heeney, Mills, Wicks, Campbell, Gulden. Pretty much get given games before anyone else is looked at.
I'm done with that shit.

Play both

Jesse Dattoli reveals long-term goal to become midfielder at Sydney

But while he’s already looking forward to sharing a forward line with Papley, the ultimate goal is to become a hybrid midfielder who can become a potent weapon for the Swans in the years to come. And he’s already received some good advice from some young AFL stars.

“I feel like (Papley and I are) both small but we’re different,” he said.

“He’s more on the ground and I’m a bit more aerial. So I feel like it could be a really good combination moving forward.

“As a forward, I’d say (I’d model off) a bit of Jamie Elliott and Toby Greene,” he said.

“That marking small forward.

“But as a midfielder, I want to play a bit like Lachie Neale. So I’d like to play 50-50 at the Swans eventually and yeah, go from there.
For those who were requesting the Swans draft an inside mid, these quotes might interest you as Jesse hopes to have a role as a midfielder and play like Lachie Neale. We'll have to see how things pan out...

I'm sure everyone wants to play midfield, but the reality is there are other roles that need doing. We have a dearth of small forwards both in the short-term and long-term, and nearly every option capable of filling it - Dattoli, Cleary, Campbell - is probably harboring ambitions to play midfield instead. As are others like Roberts, Sheldrick & Warner Jr.

A number of these guys are gonna fail to realise those ambitions and will have to suck it up and make themselves valuable in other roles and positions. Will be a good test for them.

He will be a mid

Wrong thread but you guys are relentless. If you were coach and won the minor premiership, the qualifying final, and smashed the prelim final, why would you change for the GF? Hindsight muppets.

Yep just conveniently ignore and do nothing to address the first quarter starts, the late season slump which we never really recovered from, and the massacre by Port Adelaide

No hindsight whatsoever, the only muppet was sitting in the coaches box

Back on topic, I don’t mind this pick

If he can impact as a small forward initially and then move to the midfield eventually it’s a win
Wouldn't surprise me if he turns into a 30% on baller in the future but obviously starts as a small forward

Dattoli arrives at the club with more size than some of the previous young forwards at the Swans have had and that should put him in good stead for his first year in the AFL.

His a fitness fanatic and has a boxing background.

It's not hugely surprising, really excited for this selection.

I'm wondering if this boxing thing is overblown. The bit I came across said he had two fights when he was 14 years old, won the first, lost the second (which he thinks he didn't).

I wouldn't say so, getting to the point where you can safely have an amateur fight in boxing takes a tonne of effort (usually at least one or two years of proper training).

Just three three minute rounds will seriously tank you as it's non-stop and you literally do not get a moment to rest, plus on top of the cardio vascular requirements you need extraordinary agility and hand eye coordination.

It takes a certain mental strength to get yourself in the ring, I really do think it will hold him in good stead.

Lets just hope Mills isn't challenging him to wrestle that's all I'll say!

I love this pick my no 1 need

I think we need Dattoli in the forward line more so than the midfield.

Last season we were high scoring. But I feel we lacked a bit of creativity in the forward line. We relied a lot on Papley to generate some attacking spark. (When our midfield were not dominating or winning turnovers.)

So I don't mind drafting guys like Dattoli or Bowman who might offer something different in our forward line.
