All One Day cricket is an afterthought

Just 20 years ago (only remember this due to youtube randomly showing up with highlights of it) this was NSW team against the Redbacks (which included Cosgrove, Blewett, Dizzy, Tate, Andy Flower). Was shown live on 9, commentated by all the top commentators at the time. The whole format has fallen massively in pretty short time

Who the **** was Don Nash? Did he win a competition to play that day?

CA seemingly couldn’t give two shits how many people rock up to or watch ODIs now. They’re less than an afterthought, the only reason we still play them is WC qualification. They probably don’t rank much higher than the domestic one day cup in terms of scheduling importance for CA.

It’s sad, because these games used to be huge events in town with a real party (and at time rowdy) atmosphere.

They probably make more selling the tv rights to India than getting a good crowd at the G.

As a kid the one dayers were king. Taylor, Boon etc would struggle to make 230 and it would be enough for Warnie to defend.

They sanitised the crowd, somebody think of the families, until it became so shit the only people that show up are the ex pats of the touring team.

The hill at Adelaide Oval was tremendous for impressionable teenagers ditching school to go watch an ODI or day of the test...

I remember a young lass flashing the hill every time she walked passed. Got a bigger cheer than most wickets!

I remember they banned the Mexican wave during the 2007 tri-series because game 1 of that series at the G was mental. 78k crowd out of control, but almost everyone there was having a blast even though the game was completely one-sided. That's when the whole atmosphere and the crowds started to die off. The tri series itself was scrapped the following year and it was all downhill from there.

I understand wanting a family friendly environment safe for kids etc, but surely it cant be that hard (especially in such a massive stadium) to just have designated family areas where your kids aren't going to see flashing or fights or swearing etc. And then you can leave the Bay 13 area for people who want to go and make that atmosphere. But no, let's treat the entire crowd like toddlers, that'll keep em coming back.

I remember Dion Nash who played for NZ but I can't say I remember Don Nash.

Looking on cricinfo he actually played quite a bit. 40 odd FC games and average 30 odd. Looked like Doug the rug.

It was the golden era of domestic cricket on FTA. Mercantile Mutual signs. Could name Thorneley, Holdsworth, McNamara, Chee Que etc as NSW domestic players from that era but legit couldn't recall him at all.

Not sure that they are aware, they have been promoting Warner's inclusion to their commentary team like everyone loves him.

His inclusion could boost Ch7's ratings for the test series with people switching over to their coverage from Fox just to avoid him.
I use to do that when Shane Warne came on comms. I hated his commentary as he’d crap on about the same thing for his whole stint constant whinging. I’d switch to 7 for half an hour then switch back as I can’t stand the ads.

The darts here suffered the same fate. The first one was mental at Marvel stadium, crowd was insane. Then security was so OTT the next year that half the crowd was evicted before the final, atmosphere completely died. Now the events are held in Wollongong and Townsville in tiny arenas instead of capital city entertainment centres...

I mean shit, if you've watched darts you know the crowd gets a touch rowdy!

God O’Keeffee talks some shit.
‘They know Rizwan has been out a few times last summer to that short cover fieldsman, it’s a definite tactic.’

He has olayed 6 innings against Australia in the last two years and once he was out in the offside chasing quick runs when they were seven down.
The Bruce McAvaney school of comms there. Make up a believable stat to make it sound like you're very researched knowing full well no one is going to look into it

The stupid part with Warnie was he had a very very smart cricket brain. He never needed the bullshit about pizzas and whatnot.

"India will be picking their squad for the tour shortly"

Pretty sure India have already selected the Border Gavaskar Trophy squad Junior.
The carrier pigeon doesn't get to Sydney until tommrow
