Still haven’t forgotten him knocking back that St Kilda contract when he hadn’t played one game for us. Super excited to see how he progresses especially since hearing he’s in top shape.

He was already contracted for next year
They’ve made a great decision to lock him away before the other clubs come for him after he goes to another level next year.
You can extend and front load it, much like how they extend and push money back to make room (Collingwood and Treloar, GCS and Bowes etc)

Forget leadership group.
Sam needs to find the next level in his game . Love the X factor stuff but now he needs to be taking 10 marks a game and getting his positioning around the ground right and become a 15 possession a game player.

If he takes 10 marks a game he'll be phenomenal

A marking ruckman is a huge advantage, esp down the line on the wings.

There were a couple of games last year where he held onto a few and the difference it makes to the whole team performance is massive.

I'd say of all the players on our list if he could become a consistent very good player it would just about make the most impact to our performances next year. A physical ruckman that could set the tone for our midfield would be a difference maker for us - especially given our many performances where we simply lacked intensity.

He's got quite a bag of tricks but we need to see him put it together in a more consistent fashion. Last year there were many games where he was a non factor or drifted in and out of games. That said it was the first year he's both been fit and played seniors all year so I'm sure it was valuable experience for him. Hopefully he can continue to build.

AFL pre-season 2023: Sam Draper impressing at pre-season training

The Bombers will need plenty of players to improve to avoid a repeat of 2022 this season and it appears one rising star is ready to answer the call. Get the latest pre-season news here.

Lauren Wood

Watch out, opposition rucks.

If Monday’s almost three-hour session is anything to go by, Sam Draper could go from cult hero to serious threat.

He’s always been important, but the 24-year-old’s combination of size and craft has him in the box seat to become one of the Bombers’ best — if not the best — player in 2023.

Draper has proven imposing against Andrew Phillips and Nick Bryan in recent match hit-outs and was stoic again on Monday, even plucking the ball from the ruck and bursting forward out of a pack when given the opportunity.

Once the competition’s rising star but has all the hallmarks of the real thing.
