Martin write up:

Dustin Martin / Bendigo Pioneers / 187cm / 86kg

Tigers are crying out for quality users of the footy; and Martin fits the bill. I have Martin as the number three on my board, behind Trengove and Scully. Martin can play as both an inside and outside midfielder, and had great disposal efficiency in the TAC playing an inside role this year. In my opinion, he's got the skill to keep up these numbers or even better them, whilst playing a more outside role at AFL footy.

The DC's new kicking assessment had Martin extremely high up so that's a really good indicator that those who have been raving about Martin are right; the kid can use the footy.

The things that make him stand out for mine are his toughness in the contest, his composure and quality decision making with the ball.

Others I considered with this pick: One man only. John Butcher. I'm a big fan and the Tigers need a KPF, but Martin is too good to pass up and I've been slightly swayed by a few of the question marks over Butcher's kicking. The Tiger's need a 60-100 goal a season Power Forward and I'm unsure if Butcher will become that, but I'm positive that Martin will become a 200 game player at AFL level.

Just moved this to the correct thread.

Yes I have and to be honest whilst he has looked flashy at times he has done bugger all when he has been tagged. That is the main reason I don't want him. Plus we have 1 Jetta too many as it is!

Not many 21 year olds get tagged- it takes a bit of getting used to I would have thought. If you havent seen Rohan cant believe you can vehemently be against drafting him!

Just don't want someone averaging less than 15 disposals a game at pick 10. He is not Daniel Rich like in his kicking.

You mean despite winning the game for the WAFL v SANFL, with 3 goals in atrocious conditions, and coming under a fair bit of attention after half time and despite winning a senior WAFL first semi final for Swans? I have watched many times when he has delivered a 40-50m pass, eye level height to a leading forward when he has been at full pace, so his kicking is pretty good!

Pick 5 - North Melbourne - Ben Cunnington 186cm 84kg Geelong Falcons

I’m not one for being controversial, and gave a spray to Emma Quayle for precisely the same thing last year.

I’ve decided to remain with the hard nose, goal kicking, inside ball winner in Victorian Ben Cunnington.

I’m not so sure the NM recruiters would swing this way if the two were up for grabs on the day.
Cunnington is an absolutely fantastic prospect, and although not being the most outstanding draftee in any-one discipline, he has no glaring weaknesses.

A predominantly inside ball winner (when playing in the midfield), he possess’ neat footskills (7.0/10), above average penetration, and has a good technique, being the sort of prospect that will relish a professional environment, whose skills will improve with 6 days-a-week training.
His strength in disposal certainly lies in his vision, decision making, and delivery by hand (9.0/10). He wins a lot of his clearances through a crafty handball to the advantage of a running player, or quick hands into space, being his trademark.

His skills compliment his attack on the ball, which, without doubt is the best of anyone in this years pool. His defensive side to his game is what will have recruiters salivating. There are plenty Nathan Lonies of the world, but Cunnington is always close to #1 on every stat sheet in tackles, hard ball gets, %1’s and blocks. A true animal at the contest, when combining all his qualities, which includes fantastic leadership potential, he is a very enticing “complete package”, highlighted by the fact he averaged 24 disposals a game in the TAC Cup, earning him runner-up in the morrish medal, and 20 disposals a game at the championships (50% contested), earning him AA Honours.

Now to his other position.

He has been used effectively by the Falcons and VicC regularly as a leading forward, and sometimes as a one-out full forward to great effect, he averaged close to 2 goals a game for the season in the TAC Cup, he is a great contested mark for his size. Again, his attack on the ball, and ferociousness at the contest, ensures that if the ball isn’t marked, he will most definitely bring it to ground.

A tough, skilled, ball winner, with a great defensive aspect, that can go forward and kick goals.

Perfect fit for North.

Players like: Joel Selwood/Anthony Stevens

Pick 6 - Sydney - Anthony Morabito (Peel Thunder) 29/10/91 - 190cm,90kg

I am genuinely shocked to see Morabito fall to here and it has thrown me out just a bit. My theory is why not play the next Adam Goodes in the same side as the old Adam Goodes to learn the ropes. Just a super powerful unit who can play through the midfield but also has the size to play KPP. At this stage he tends to not push himself overly hard but in the Sydney set up I would think he will be a terrific player for the next 10 years.

Pick 7 - West Coast - Daniel Talia

When I first saw this kid my mind was taken back to around 1990 when I first saw a then 16yo Glen Jackovich playing senior WAFL footy and holding his own.

Talia reads the ball well, marks well, kicks well and has that competitive nature where he loves the contest. In junior footy he has even been run through the midfield, so pairing him up with Cox, Naita and Lynch it could be the biggest midfield ever.

My reasoning is that I think the Eagles are 1 genuine KPD short, especially CHB and if I'm going to take a KPP I want to take the best, not one available further down this draft.

Let the wailing and gnashing of teeth begin!:)

Swannies, I think the Eagles may go the same way as eveident from my PD. You will get 2 good mids at 22 and 23- well done!

Huge shock by WCE, i like the logic behind it. Hopping to get a small forward with 22 and mid 23. Interesting. Not good for bombers Hoped u got jetta so lucas/Rohan could slip. Puts Pressure on Port as Not many quality KPP left and melb are likely to snare one. :D I like this its about a quarter as exciting as draft day (and thats saying something).

I'm here with the picks:

Pick #8 - Port Adelaide - Kane Lucas (WA) - 187cm, 79kg

Quite surprised to see him left available at this stage, particularly with Gary Rohan still on the board - I'm expecting them to be the likely picks at #6 and #7 in the real deal, personally, and I'd expect that at least one of them would go at those spots.

Kane Lucas reminds me of Scott Pendlebury with his good size, agility, footskills and ability to get his hands on the ball. He's even got solid pace and leap to boot. To be quite honest, he's very much in the mould of the modern footballer, and his ability to play multiple roles will appeal to a team looking to build up a strong midfield rotation going forward.

Teamed up with Hamish Hartlett, Travis Boak and a host of Port's other younger midfielders, he should provide another facet to their future midfield, in the ability to go forward and kick goals.

Pick #9 - Port Adelaide - Jake Carlisle (Vic) - 197cm, 87kg

I tossed and turned over this pick greatly, but ultimately went with a guy that I think has both tremendous upside and a strong range of skills right now.

Carlisle has excellent size and is an excellent mark overhead, and while he needs to bulk up, he shows the potential ability to be a contested marking forward who is capable of imposing himself on a contest. He's a good kick of the ball, and though he needs to improve his overall fitness, ultimately he could see time at AFL level in year one.

TBH, I thought Daniel Talia would be available at this stage, but Butcher going at #4 probably affected that. I was thinking about taking another player at this pick, but I think there's a significantly better chance of the other player being available at #16.

I was also strongly considering going SA with at least one of these picks, but recent history has shown that isn't a particularly high priority with Port.

Bit of a surpise with Carslie at 9. Thought Richmond would get him at 19, If he is this good to go pick 9 in this draft im really hoping Richmond can get him with 19 in the real deal.
