Sam's engine is good enough to play 70% TOG in the ruck. I've had the (dis)pleasure of playing against him while he was at the Ants as well as having watch him at plenty of training sessions while at the Blues.

He isn't a natural runner. He's a natural footballer, with good skills, great positional sense and with just the right amount of mongrel. He pushes himself through the pain and runs his guts out for his side. No offence meant to Maric, but Jacobs has him covered comfortably.

The reason he spent a relatively small amount of time on ground and in the ruck wasn't a knock on his fitness. When paired with Kruezer, having Kruezer on the ball due to his 1%ers and follow up work was more valuable then winning a few more hitouts. When paired with Warnock, it was a similar situation.
Cheers for that mate.:thumbsu: 70% TOG is fine with the new rule, allowing us to play a Mckernan/Sellar/Moran or whatever for the other 30%.

No problem. I don't know the Adelaide board and it's tendencies so this might get shot down, but what about Tippet playing backup? He is tall, athletic with a good eye for the drop of the ball & he has potential with his body work. Surely he'd be a good performer if his rotation was something like, 8 minutes up forward, 4 minutes in the ruck, 5 on the bench, 10 up forward and 5 in the ruck.

As a rule, that suggestion would be much worse received than my 56 ball 116* this afternoon. But you get that. And I've been drinking

i appreciate the ideas coming 4ward, but what is 'yooouuu' all about? doesnt make sense yoouuuu crows..
Personally id rather a good song played between goal and bounce (only if a big goal is scored, an exciting one) the breaks between goal and bounce are getting longer, so a 40 sec song clip would fit nicely and G up the crowd, the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins have great songs!

Even "Let's go Ad-el-aide! Lets Go Clap clap, starting slow then getting a bit faster would be better than current horse shite

Its Cooooooooome Ooooooon Yooooooou Croooooooooooows

Then the you crows bit gets repeated a few times.

P.s. playing music in between is a horrible idea.

think the general consensus is that he is too valuable up forward to be wasted in the ruck, even though he is a pretty capable ruckman. Here's hoping jacobs lives up to some of the potential people are placing on him.

It's been tried over the last few seasons.

Whenever we use tippett as backup we seem to stink. (not his ruckwork, more getting the ball forward)

As soon as we switched back to to genuine ruckmen our team performed noticeably better. It felt better.

Now - I think if we changed our gameplan going forward a bit (started honouring the leads of class forwards like Walker rather than just bombing in on tips or another players head) we might see improvement too.

But at this point you'll struggle to find a poster here who doesn't think your idea has been done and dusted and doesn't suit our team.

It's because Tippett's workrate in the forward line is incredible. He really makes the defenders earn their keep, and in the air, is nearly impossible to stop.

If only there was somewhere to play him where we didn't have to rely on his goalkicking to win matches. It's a conundrum.

Fair enough! Admittedly the only time I watch the Crows are when they play the Blues or when I'm in Adelaide on work so I have no idea!

Hopefully Jacobs will get a game round 1, which'll likely be the only AS stadium game I'll see.

thought i remember reading somewhere on hear he had a very good engine? maybe I was mistaken.

Watching both he and Maric get some tutelage from Clarke it seemed to me Jacobs was able to adapt to the body positions and tap to location far better than big Evarn. Evarn really semed to rely on all of his limbs in all directions to keep his balance and get in position to try and implement the required tap.
His tap work is sublime. Really gets creative as the game goes on and benefits from extended exposure in the ruck.

His body work in the ruck is also good, tries to nullify more athletic opponents by pinning them with his off arm. Does it well too.

His best position for the team is where he kicks goals, his kicking will click hopefully, then where he is best utilised he has an effect on the scoreboard, can see where you're coming from, however, the less time he's rucking and away from the 50 arc the better :thumbsu:

Jacobs' endurance is actually very good on the training track for a ruckman - in 10 minute exercises like the beep test, Goodwin run or 3km trial. But his ability to find match fitness and run out 2 hour games last year let him down, as was to be expected at this stage of his career. A good beep test result does not mean a player can run out the game - but it is a fair indicator they will be able to do so in time very well.

Tippetts height, timing and leap mean if he gets a good go at the ball his hands are simply out of reach for the defender to punch when he's marking the ball.

We won't waste that in the Ruck anymore, unless injuries force it.

I like the sound of this :thumbsu: Developing the fitness to run out a match had struck me as Jacobs' main achilles heel so I hope you're right!

If only we had two tippett style players on our list! One for the ruck and one for the forward line! Oh well...When Tippett is in the ruck i like his attack or hunt on the ball, reminds me of Hudson, which we have missed in that regard. I am with the majority, Kurt is more valuable in the forward line when on song.

Stabby...Do you think Jacobs might have some qualities like Hudson, where he has the ability to hunt the ball in the packs and good second and third efforts?

I would love to get a ruckman like that at our club again.

Although more as a 2nd ruck but I think McKernan has these attributes. Watching him in a ruck drill last week at training, once the ball hit the deck he would move more like a midfielder then a lumbering ruck. His speed and agility reallt shone in these contests which is exciting.

I haven't watched him as closely as many others on here, but from what I've seen/heard, he's a damn competitive beast, wherever the ball is.

I'd be expecting to see second and third efforts in the clearance, but for him to have little other impact around the ground, at least to start with.

There's some pics from training up on facebook.

The pick of them:

I went and watched the crows train this morning as i'm on holidays in Adelaide.

Impressed with Phil Davis. Looks to be a future leader of the club. Has a real presence about him and will hold CHB for the year if he stays injury free.

Was interested in how much Neil Craig gets involved particularly with his voice and encouragement. When the boys were doing their repeated sprints (it looked tough) he was constantly motivating the lads and when the ruckman and KPP's were running he was yelling at Brad Moran saying "we need big guys that can run Brad".

From a Carlton point of view I was pleased to see "Big Sauce" leading the way. You have a beauty there.

Andy Otten appears to be moving exceptionally well and has put on some considerate size particularly in the legs since his knee reco.

David Mckay moved well away from the main group and wouldn't be too far away joining the rest. In the zone groups James Sellar was used a defender.

I think his name is Will Young (tatt on right shoulder) looks a good prospect but struggles with his kicking, particularly his ball drop.

Good luck for 2011
