Re: Round 1 team

Thanks for the replies guys, I really hope that Ladson can prove me wrong, but I'm just haunted by a few of his games last year and also what I saw of him from the tigers game in the pre season, granted I'm in Canada at the moment and it was a pretty bad stream.

BUT he looked slow and indecisive.

I tend to agree with macdaddio, again I hope I'm wrong cos it will be for the benefit of the team.

Re: Round 1 team

For those who haven't seen what your up against here is the Adelaide team

B: Johncock, Rutten, Stevens.
HB: van Berlo, Davis, Doughty.
C: Tambling, Reilly, Mackay.
HF: Knights, Walker, Douglas.
F: Porplyzia, McKernan, Vince.
R: Maric, Sloane, Thompson.
I/C: Dangerfield, Henderson, Otten, Smith.
Emerg: Jaensch, Moran, Symes.

Going on reports during the week Otten a likely candidate for the sub position.

Re: Team for Round One

Yeah not happy with Ladson and Suckling both in the back half.

Happy with Lisle at least geting an emergency spot. Happy with shiels and savage getting a go.

No Isaac Smith?

Suprising amount of negativity on here about this team. I guess with no real form-lines to speak of, preconceived ideas can come to the fore.

People saw what happened at Collingwood last year, with senior players being pushed out of the side by young talent.

We have preconceived ideas as we've seen a handful of players under perform for two years running now and we want to see something different. These guys have been playing on reputation for two years now and it's not suprising people want change.

I'm wasn't expecting Ladson to be selected. Ozzie must perform in the first 3-4 games. Same with Batemen. Happy to see that Ellis and Guerra aren't automatic selections.

Don't get me wrong, i'd be more than happy to see these guys come out and play well, but if they don't they need to make way for quicker, younger and hungrier players.

Yes, I also agree

Ladson has played 16 games total the last 2 seasons, hardly automatic.

Re: Round 1 team

He is fit agian, and when fit a better footballer than you think !

I remember Laddo's first year at the club when he was really flying at Box Hill. He was selected for his first game shortly after but injured his knee at training and missed most of the year. From memory he was the first of the draftees picked for a senior game which was not bad considering Hodge Brown and Mitchell were in that group. Unfortunately he seemed to be plagued by injury and whilst serviceable he never achieved the success he seemed capable of and seemed to lose a bit of his pace.
However as N24 said he is a good footballer when fit and I wish him well. 2011 will be an important year for Rick.

Osborne better show something in his next few games or he will be the next dropped. Team seems about right. I guess Murphy is still injured or not 100% for him not to be selected at all.

I think the Club is taking the view that because this is at AAMI, they have been careful in not picking too many newbies, who may feel like rabbits hit by a spotlight. So Ladson, when fully fit is a different player to the one struggling to get match fit on and off last year. It would have been a big risk to go with more untried players in Puopolo and Smith.

Guerra is obviously carrying a niggle and Murphy has not had enough match fitness either. I also don't think Ellis has played many practice matches either.

Going for Shiels and Savage is a big plus in my view. They have shown great intensity and their form warrants a spot. I am really hoping these two can play well and command a regular spot. This will be huge for the club. Shiels knows how to get the pill and is very hard at it too. Savage has class and skill and when he believes that he belongs, he will become a dangerous player.

Suckling has also shown value now that he's fully fit, but as others have said, he needs to now show a bit of hardness at the contest. I think this will come when he has confidence in his body.

My feeling is that Suckling and Ladson are good kicks and they may be used in an offensive role (hopefully not offensive to Hawk supporters:eek:). But that is where I see their value - picking up the loose ball or a handpass and delivering it accurately.

Overall there is a fair bit of run in this side. Let's wait and see how those picked fit into the team's game plan. Interesting times. Go Hawks.

What most people know:

Both teams have good fwd lines. Supply will be the issue. Rotating through our midfield will be Renouf/Hale, Burgoyne, Rioli, Sewell, Mitchell, Lewis, Bruce, Bateman, Shiels, Young and Savage. This is where it will be won.

These guys are very capable and if they play like they can, our potent fwd line is able to do the job. Let's hope they are really fired up.

With full field / forward line presses the vogue strategy, have good decision makers and better disposal coming out of the back half is very, very important. Suckling and Ladson (Ladson especially) have those in spades. Even more important with Guerra not playing. Good selections.

Not surprised Bailey isn't playing, will more likely start his season off in Melbourne or Tassie.

Surely a three-way toss up for the Sub between Shiels, Savage and Whitecross. Whitecross is the most versatile player, he would be my tip. Alternatively, run Renouf ragged for the first half and a bit, then sub a fresh ruck on in Hale.
