Suckling would not be in my team, but with Guerra out I suspect he will do all the kicking in. This is one thing, in fact the only thing as far as I can see, that he can do extremely well. Clarkson still thinks that all a footballer needs is a left foot.

Ladson also would not be in my team, but he was our best player in our last serious game. No one on the coaching staff would have noticed that he has been physically overwhelmed in every appearance against Adelaide. We can only hope the classic Adelaide brawniness has been reduced with all their retirees.

Hope someone thinks to put some pressure on Scott Thompson this time round. He routinely racks up double-figure possessions in the first quarter against us, usually with no opponent.

This could hardly be a tougher first round match, given our appalling interstate form last year, but at least we couldn't ask for a better litmus test. If the game plan and attitude have changed for the better, this game will certainly show it. Good luck to the boys.

Re: Round 1 team

i just cant see why ladson is in the team, can anyone try to enlighten me?

yes i totally agree m8. IMO pup and cheney would've been miles ahead of ladson. pup and cheney in for sucking and ladson i wouldve thought. But great so see my man savage in as well as shiels. any thoughts that wx could be the sub as he can play fwd or back

Ok i am going to say it Suckling may surprise a few on here with his game on Saturday. He did get a lot of the ball in the pre season. He has been hampered by injury in his previous seasons and has finally improved his fitness. He has set himself up for the season and i can see why he is in the side. Similar to ladson he is a great kick which comes in handy when you are trying to pin point 1 player in amongst 36 flooded in your front half. The future is nigh lets reserve our judgements about his selection until he has had oppportunity to show his wares on Saturday

Agreed both Pop and Cheney look like better defenders, but Suckling and Laddo are both significantly better at using the ball.

With all the flooding and pressing in today's game it is going to be critical to have guys that can both run it out of defence and also use the ball precisely, to reduce turn-overs.

Time will tell which option or combination works best. I was hoping to see Pop play round 1 though.

Given that Guerra and Pops are lining up for box hill. Clarko has categorically decided that this is our best 22. Earn your spot? Guerra might be underdone or not fit enough (or not good enough) and like others have mentioned Pops doesn't use the ball as effectively as suckling and ladson

I don't understand all the comments about specific players being under the pump because they're not playing, or that player A doesn't deserve a game before player B.

It's Round 1, people. The side has been selected with nothing but the TEAM in mind. And as a consequence some guys who've had solid preseasons have been rewarded, while others have been squeezed out.

I don't mind that at all, but it does give us a preview of what we've not had for some time 'Depth'.

Players like Ellis, Ladson, Guerra etc will be squeezed out from time to time, and there will be competition for spots.
If one of these players does end up at Box Hill for the week it's not a case of them being made example of, as some have suggested here, it's simply Clarkson and the match committee selecting a team that they think will succeed.

There is no set best 22, it will be a revolving and evolving squad based on form....as it should be.

Can posters stop going on about players form in previous years. Past form (good or bad) and reputations should mean nothing. If your performing to the coaches instructions you get in the 22 otherwise back to BH. And that should be from captain down. I think we've got the depth to drop non performers this year.

I'm pretty happy with the team, coaches know best and what really excites me is that we have the likes of Hodge to come back with Goo, murph, ellis, puopol, cheney, lisle and smith pushing for selection. Anyone not having a good game this week hopefully will be on the chopping block. If that doesn't motivate them they deserve to be in the seconds.:thumbsu:

Re: Round 1 team

really conservative selection by clarko except Suckling who I didnt rate as a starter.

I am surprised no Ellis, Guerra and Murphy.

Suckling is a better kick than Murphy but hmmm...big surprise for mine. Murphy's rolled ankle vs the eagles must have been worse than first thought??

Goo was rubbish pre season so on form cant be selected??

Ladson though was also poor from the games I saw so what gives?

Good luck to Suckling.

I am just glad he isnt playing on a red head called cameron

I was at the Hawks v. Dees practice match earlier this month, and thought Ladson looked ordinary, but according to a snippet I saw on Fantasy Freako's Twitter he was our top scorer with 104 or 114 or something.

So maybe Ladson is doing more than I (and others) thought? Here's hoping he is fit, and has moved on from his personal problems and can go back to being a solid contributor.

The selected positions are meaningless as we will almost certainly line up like that. What will be critical are the matchups and I hope we will have learn't something from our past visits to Adelaide.

Interesting read in the AGE today where it stated that last year Clarkson had introduced a team rule that no player was supposed to be more than 70 metres from the ball. Sort of explains this whole no forward line thing. It did also say that they thought that rule might be brought back to 60 metres this season (or as they said a Youngy punt)

"Henceforth, the Hawks would kick the ball more and handball less. Their ball movement consequently would edge closer to the boundary. Clarkson implemented a team rule in which no player would be more than about 70 metres from the ball, no matter where it was. The loose ''rolling'' zone was compacted. Defenders would push up and loiter in the attacking half when the ball was deep in Hawthorn's forward line.
Critically, the Hawks also would use the interchange bench with far greater frequency. They would become the highest interchanging team in the remaining rounds, in which they were transformed from 1-6 straggler to play finals. To play a press - which involved frenetic tackling and swarming around the contest - meant ramping up the intensity. They would play like Collingwood.
In 2011, Hawks may be compressing the field further, using a ''60-metre rule'' that chains every player to within a Clinton Young bomb of the ball."

Glad that Ellis, Guerra and Murphy are being made to earn their spots. I reckon Cheney is stiff after a good pre-season, but can see merit in the selecting Suckling to replace Goo. Ladson is very lucky IMO, but I hope he can provide some quality rebound from defence.

Not sure if Bruce will spend much time up forward unless he is tagging Johncock. I think he needs to run with Thompson or Vince or play off half back to release Birchall to the wing.

Don't agree with those questioning the selection of Ossie. He had a great game against the Roos and is our only genuine small forward option other than Cyril. He competes hard and will be crucial when Hale, Roughie and Buddy are all forward.

Can't wait to see how Shiels and Savage go tonight. I reckon Shiels will add some much needed grunt and hard running to the midfield and Savage some genuine pace and skill (which we sorely need).

The first 5-10 minutes will be crucial. If we can get a couple of early goals and take the crowd of the game it will go a long way to us winning. Can't wait!
