Michael Whiting: "The match was broken into three thirds, of which Leuenberger played the first two". Was probably rested for the fourth third but it never came.

Had a long write-up but the browser closed, so I'll simplify.

Lisle, Martin and Goose were the pick of the talls. Paparone good too. Ace, despite his three goals, was relatively quiet - unless I'm just not reading into the signs he did show as they've been shown many times before.

Redden was his usual self, and would've probably had his hands on the ball more than anyone (until he went off, at least). Rocky was a bit quiet but not disappointing, while Moloney and Beams took a while to get into it but were solid contributors by the end of the match. Bewick's pace was exciting too, as was Yeo's.

Polec got a fair bit of it, but was uncharacteristically messy in his disposal.

Banfield, Bartlett, Newell, Wrigley and Close probably the quietest.

I'm biased, but Pat had an outstanding game, and as I see it was best on ground pretty comfortably. Just seemed in control every time he got the ball - which happened many times - and used it superbly. My optimism about him that had faded last season well and truly returned today. The way he plays footy just screams class.

Those are the main points for mine, but will post later if anything else comes to mind.

Also- no sign of either Harwood or Hanley.

Harwood rolled his ankle (I think) last Thursday and Hanley was with him on the bike. The brought the bikes right down to the fences which was kind of funny, give the boys a better view.

That's all I wanted to hear.

Harwood has a calf problem, but no biggie, after talking to him at the Family Day.

Agree with the observations about PK.

Would be very sad to have lost him.

I'm quite convinced that PK's form is related directly to the length of his hair.

As an unashamed bandwagoneer for Ace and Bewick I have to say Bewick carved up, great game with some really impressive moments. Good decision making and movement through traffic, and he was making it to a lot of contests especially in the third period when others were slowing down.

Ace did kick 3 goals as the third tall for the reds, and would often drift to the wing to receive and deliver into the 50. He mainly had Close on him, but also had Lester at times. Close didn't seem comfortable as a defender and it really did give Ace a lot of room to move. He did beat Lester to the drop of the ball a few times though (by a country mile). What I did like (and am constantly looking for) is that there were some good second efforts from Ace. I still think there needs to be more for him to demand selection, and a few times he was at jogging into the 50 instead of running to create space. I think we need to still see more fitness and hunger for opportunities if he is going to cement a spot in the 22.

While the Patty K hype is certainly worth it, it should be said that he went head to head with Bewick and Beams for much of the game, two players who also had quite good games. Hopefully he can get his defensive skills together because he is such a fun player to watch.

The highlights reel is here!! And it's nearly 6 minutes long!!

Wow, Merrett got pretty fired up too. Overall, Cornelius looked good along with Reddo and Crisp.
Karnezis looking the best I've seen, and looking a lot more bulked up.
Can't wait to see Docherty and Moloney this year!
Bewick has a lot of evasive skills, and it's awesome to see.

Based on that vid, are we that broke we can't even afford to put numbers on the Red team's jumper.:p

Maybe Vero didn't shell out as much sponsorship dosh as National Storage? :p

You'd think National Storage would have a couple of rolls of white masking tape handy... Easy fix there.

The standouts for me were Doc, Bewick, Patty K, Yeo and Rich.

Yeo didn't give Banfield an inch and towelled him up at every opportunity.

Bewick had a great game and loves a run.

Be hard to pick the round one team

Noticed Merrett push over someone who had the cheek to tackle him a bit late.

Also Green and Golby had a somewhat fiesty head to head which could have turned nasty.

All good stuff. Minimal injuries for a pretty hard contest although Redden was escorted off with what seemed like a head knock.

I know it is early, but I hope Banfield being quiet today is an abberation and not indicative or continuation of his 2012 year. I'm really hoping he can pull together this year, because we all know how good he can be, otherwise I fear we may not see him post the 2013 season, especially if the likes of Green, Zorko and Mayes continue on.

Alpha male stuff. Well recall Charmo getting into that low skilled ruckman we traded off to Carlton in a practise game at Coorparoo.

My immediate thought at the time was you can't afford to cop that stuff quietly. Your status within the group is diminished.
Yep, there's been a bit of that going around at Coorparoo over the preceding few weeks.

I love it.

Don't like to pick on the poor bloke, but from the few clips Banfield does not look like he is moving well. Crisp on the other hand looks extremely athletic.
