List Mgmt. 2014: The List

Damien Barrett (in his weekly sliding doors article) said he will be shocked if Jeffy is on our list next year.

Jeff Garlett -> VFL for poor play = Garlett gawn.

Horse shit.

I'm not saying Jeff wont be gone but it wont be because of the reasons Barrett thinks it is. Garlett fits into the category of premium small forward. He cannot go into the midfield rotations and as such requires a premium contract at a position where MM sees as easily replaceable without lavish contracts. The same thing that happened to Eddie Betts. In an MM coached team the only big money forwards that will be on the list will be strong marking forwards that can present as a target. Of our small and medium sized forwards the only one that factors in long term is Troy Menzel. The others can be replaced with smart midfielders (e.g. Daisy) who can rotate into the forward line and rest or can be picked up as late draft picks.

If you're a small to mid sized player and cannot play through the midfield or are not a specialist defender you wont be on the CFC list for too long.

Troy Menzel will be a midfielder once he builds the required fitness though. We also have a plethora of rookie medium forwards on the list. Luke Reynolds, Blaine Johnson, Sheehan, Byrnes etc. I'm hoping that Temay can replace Garlett since I can't handle soft small forwards who go missing anymore. Guys like Garlett are the cream that put on top after you build the core of your side. Our core is rather lacking at the moment and we need more reliable types in the team before we start accomodating one-dimensional small forwards.

Need more players who fit within our structures and suit the gameplan.

I completely agree with you. Menzel will be exactly what we've hoped Garlett and to a certain extent Yarran would become. A genuine midfielder who can play equally well as a small to medium sized forward. Agree that we have depth in the small forward position and could easily find a cheap ready to go option if MM wants someone for the short to medium term.

Good luck to Jeffy getting the $400,000 he will earn elsewhere.

A late first rounder for Garlett + steak knives would be nice.

See, I think a perfect place for Jeff would be GWS. They already have the key forwards in place for him to be spectacular in the role that he's built for. They also have what we want with players on their list that are superfluous to their plans (KPP depth). Of course the media will portray it as Carlton letting Garlett go for less than he is worth but the long term investment in such a trade would make us winners (I believe).

Garlett won't go or get us a KPP.

Uncontracted.

GWS recruited Lamb last year.

GWS's first round pick is going to be worth far too much for Garlett. Proven KPP's like Tomlinson aren't cheap either.

A club like Richmond for example who need a quality small forward would be a good target. Need to keep the list ticking over......

We need to start looking for polished midfielders. WCE Brad Sheppard, Andrew Gaff, Luke Shuey and Scott Selwood, all Vic boys. Players on our list that could be used as trade bait, Chris Yarran, Jeff Garlett, Josh Bootsma, David Ellard and Simon White. All WA boys. These are things we need to be looking at. If Gibbs does in fact leave and we end up with a double pick inside the top 10 we should look at using 1 of those picks (and steak knives as required) to secure Tom Boyd from GWS. Another KPP would be great, but if not look at developing Giles and Watson

If we finish bottom 3, I would be scoping out this years KPP pool and seeing how they compare to Boyd as personally besides being a monster I am yet to be convinced by Boyd and the players in the top 5 might be better options. If we can get Patton, totally different story would be happy to give up plenty to secure him

Shuey would be great but would need at least a first round pick, Gaff I reckon is like Reece Conca gives you tastes to get excited but doesn't seem to work hard enough to do it consistently, Selwood might be good for a few years of leadership but is certainly not a long term option and wouldn't want to give up much.

Yarran should arguably be our next priority signing. No way should we trade Yarran who is uncontracted. Look at Ebert who joined Port for unders. He'll burn us. Has polled 10 of a possible 40 AFLCA votes as a flanker. KEEP.

Scott Selwood and Sheppard are NOT polished footballers. Gaff and Shuey use the ball well but are undersized.

I know for a fact that Boyd grew up a passionate Carlton supporter and spent quite a bit of time at the club last year before he was drafted. I agree that we don't know him as a player, and it might be another epic flop, but what I do know is that Boyd will play for the Carlton jumper cos it wasn't just his childhood dream growing up to play football, but to play football for Carlton. There is a very real chance he may push a trade in the next 18 months if he is not given opportunities, I am only saying this year cos I am hopeful we don't get trade bait like this again to securing him over the next few years.

Not saying we should trade him, but everyone has a price if the right deal comes along. I hope he stays, he offers a bright spark in the team.

Imagine the shit some supporters would hang on Gaff and the club if he came to Carlton.

Struggles to break a tag.

Also slow and doesn't really win a lot of the hard ball. Isn't a aerial threat either and is easily tagged by anyone who has the fitness to keep up with him. Is rather quiet and introverted as well.

Adam Treloar, Shiels, Tomlinson, Jaksch and Boyd should all be looked at.

Fck I hate the whole he barracked for Carlton thing... Please wake up.. it means absolutely nothing in todays game.... If he wants to get out of western Sydney to come back to Melbourne he will be putting himself out there and if he comes to us it will be because we have the best offer and nothing to do with having a picture of Koutta on his wall as a kid.

If they want to leave then it does matter since it helps getting them to nominate you as their prefered club.

If they are comfortable staying at their club e.g Ollie Wines then it means nothing to them.

Treloar, Shiels would be awesome, amazing players. As for Boyd, he has built a relationship with players on our list, he is passionate about the club (more that can be said about some of the boys on the list at the moment) and more importantly if he does decide to come home will most likely nominate us as his preferred club. It will be interesting to see how much money could talk if he decides to come home. Judd supported Melbourne (who had an offer similar, but not as strong as ours) but it was his post career/Visy deal deal cos of his environmental passion that got him through our doors.

Damien Barrett (in his weekly sliding doors article) said he will be shocked if Jeffy is on our list next year.

Either he is just speculating, or maybe he has some sort of info? Who knows. Just thought it was strange that he was so definitive that Jeffy is gone.

Garlett can be a terrific player but is just too inconsistent as well as having this frustrating penchant for doing the mercurial when it is not needed (exhibit A - kick in mid-air on goal line, called a point in review, exhibit B - 10m out on slight angle and kicks on the outside of his boot and hits the post).

We need players who play the percentages more often than not and these brainfades are what is going to be his undoing.

I agree with Barrett irrespective of whether he has some inside info or not, Garlett should be offered up for trade in a bit to bring in some player types we badly need who also have a disciplined attitude.

Put it this way, Garlett is not an integral part of the future like a Menzel is.
