Goldsack is a gap filler that you can use to fill in a hole in the list. We have so many holes I don't think it's going to be worth the cash to lure him away.

I think he's a good player in a good team but won't add much to a struggling team like us.

I think that's unfair on Moloney, last year his performances were top class & I feel as if he has been a very good addition to our team.

He's getting older
Strong inside but can't run on the spread or turnover
Been watching replays of his games to understand why he's not playing, bet that's the reason .

Yeah, I doubt he'll go but if we get a great offer it'll be hard to refuse IMO. Especially if Patton/Boyd are involved and our current group of young defenders continue to develop at a nice rate. GWS will most likely be without Gilham next year and might lose Plowman to a Victorian team which will leave them short of tall defenders.

If the trade would go something like this it'll be a win/win for both clubs. Merrett + Pick 1 for Patton + one of Tomlinson/Jaksch. We get two key forwards while GWS get a mature defender and the first pick which IMO will use to draft Brayshaw - after their core they're lacking midfield class.

I'd hate to see him leave as he has gave nothing but his all for the club but I feel if there was a Patton or Boyd on the table than I feel its worth it.

We need a forward and Patton already has three pre seasons under his belt compared to Wright/McCratin. It's basically a straight swap Merrett for Tomlinson/Jaksch which I'd take in a heartbeat. Merrett won't be there when we're going to be a premiership threat.

Lisle will have to become the worlds best player if he's going to take Gardiner, Clarke, Bourke or McStay's spot when they're all developed into decent players.

So if we have too many gaps we should not attempt to fill them???
Goldsack doesn't fill a specific gap at all, he's a depth player/mature body who could fill a range of our many gaps mediocrely. So using your point of us having lots of gaps and 18-20yo's who aren't quite ready to fill them, he fits us perfectly.

Also if Collingwood target a big name FA like a Mundy they'll squeeze out some depth players.

Haha nice misrepresentation.

Goldsack would be a pricey addition. Collingwood would want to keep him and so he won't come cheap. We could afford a number of other options, or attempt to boost pay to some of our other players/recontract the likes of Mayes and Aish, etc, or we could recruit Goldsack. Because of the salary cap, its often an either-or scenario.

Pretty average example to be honest, I doubt any defense in the league would be able to stop all of them. Although Goodes will most likely be gone next year while Reid is pretty average as a forward. If it was me I'd go Clarke/Gardnier on Buddy/Tippett and play Bourke/Patfull as the loose man in defence.

Anyways you usually have to give up something of value to revive a quality player. The club is desperate for a forward - we've targeted at least one big name every year for the past four (Hogan, Tippett, Dawes, Cloke, Riewoldt come to mind) and haven't been able to land one. We've got an excess of defenders and not a single forward who has shown he'll become a 40+ goal year player.

IMO: GWS is not going to even entertain the idea of trading away Jonathon Patton for a mediocre fullback such as merrett and a draft pick. (Even if it is the #1 draft pick). All they would end up with is a player that would be fast reaching retirement and a raw teenager from the draft which would take years to develop. I don't see a single win for GWS out of that deal.

What Snoop said. But Gws are prett much guaranteed to get the number 1 or 2 pick. They dont need pick 1 as the top 3 players in the draft are forwards and they dont need any more forwards. Merret is mediocre and retirement age is coming soon.

Throw in Polkinghorne, Golby and Lisle into the deal. Maybe we could entice them to trade Patton while setting their list back a few years as well!
