Would kristian Jaksch be a viable target, given he was a first round draft pick,is a tall forward that is not getting senior exposure at the Giants.
I read a bit about him before the 2012 draft, but not much since, and i think someone mentioned he will be out of contract this year.

Not really someone you would compare with guys like Boyd, Hogan and Patton. I personally would rather stay away. I don't see him becoming that power forward we need.

Would be really interested in getting Ryan O'Keefe to the club next year. He is out of favour at the swans, if his body is fine, I would get him in as a player/assistant coach. We desperately need more players to set the standard on training track and out on the ground. O'Keefe, like Cross and Chapman would still have a fair bit to offer.

Like, like, like.

Especially given we'll likely lose a few older blokes this year; Brown, McGrath and probably Raines, Moloney and Maguire and then Staker the following year.

O'Keefe? Why waste a spot on a list on a 33yr old? Sign him up as an assistant coach maybe. But there is probably a reason he is out of favour...

Bidding war may loom among AFL clubs for opportunity-starved guns of 2012 national draft

CLUBS are targeting five prized Victorian youngsters who are coming out of contract at GWS and Sydney and have struggled for regular AFL opportunities. Jono O'Rourke was selected with pick 2. High 2012 draft picks Jono O’Rourke, Lachie Plowman, Kristian Jaksch from the Giants along with Swans Dean Towers and Tim Membrey are all drawing mega interest. Between them they have played just 16 games, an amount topped by seven players taken in the top 10 in the 2012 draft. None have expressed a desire to walk but they could set off a bidding war in October’s trade period if their base contracts expire.

THE FIVE UNCONTRACTED PLAYERS FROM 2012 DRAFT
Jono O’Rourke (pick 2, GWS — midfielder) Games: 3
Lachie Plowman (pick 3, GWS — defender) Games: 11
Kristian Jaksch (pick 14, GWS — key forward/back) Games: 2
Dean Towers (pick 22, Sydney — forward) Games: 0
Tim Membrey (pick 47, Sydney — forward) Games: 0

Jaksch would not be the key/power foward we are after, one player from Swans who I would be really keen on is Tim Membrey, a foward line in coming years of close, McCartin and Membrey looks very dangerous, Membrey also has 2 years at one of the clubs with a great rep for player development.

Two mature aged players I am interested to see if anyone knows much about are David Mirra and Shannon Taylor. Mirra is a mid size defender form box hill he has a great kick on him and reads the play really well, Taylor, a quick player who moved from WA to play with Sandrigham Dragons in VFL pretty sure 19 or 20, any one have any info on them.

I'd be keen on O'Keefe for a year too, just as a teacher/on the list assistant. I imagine he'd have some cosy deals lined up with the Swans post career but if Brown/McGrath both were to retire I'd seriously want to be looking at getting some experience to help the balance next year.

Didnt ya hear he had a dust up with the swans new million dollar a year toy at a BBQ. but agree wouldnt waste a spot on him.

One club's deadwood is another club's experienced depth. Ask Matt Spangher, Jon Ceglar, Kyle Cheney.
Polks for GWS! (actually mightn't be a bad fit)

Lachie Keefe has missed out again, with the Pies having Reid to come. Would not cost the earth. Just saying...............

Keefe, please. We're better off rebuilding through quality drafting than poaching NQR's who will be asking for above market rate to relocate to Brissy.

I'm sceptical that we'd go after someone of O'Keeffe's age, and I'm sceptical that he'd come to a team in our stage of the cycle for a year or two.

Earlier in the thread, figjam17 mentioned inside info that Goldsack was a target. I have no idea if the info is credible, but a quick google looks like he's out of contract this year (albeit 'talks underway' on an extension) and an unrestricted free agent. He strikes me as exactly the sort of player we'd be after. Right age bracket, solid, versatile, hard pressuring third forward.

I see more value in that than an older mid.

I agree with what Kevvo has said above.

I'd support getting both Goldsack and Dempsey. They aren't world beaters but they can play their roles well. I think they are much better options than O'Keffee.

With Staker's injury problems over the years Goldsack could come in handy down back or up forward.

Dempsey certainly has his fair share of injury concerns but at his best he would easily be a lock down back for us.

Both are in the right age bracket too. We wouldn't be chasing them to win a premiership, but they can certainly help us out while our younger boys are developing.

Jono O’Rourke & Lachie Plowman are two decent targets in my opinion, both haven't played much footy but were taken high in the draft. If we can try and hammer a deal out and get one of them for our third pick + Polkinghorne/Bewick I'd be happy. That is in a perfect world though and is unlikely to happen. I feel as if someone like Bewick could appeal to GWS and could have some decent trade currency if we are looking to strike a deal anywhere.

I don't understand the obsession with recruiting role players. It hasn't worked with Lisle, Clarke, Moloney et al.

What's wrong with developing our own?

I think that's unfair on Moloney, last year his performances were top class & I feel as if he has been a very good addition to our team.

Agree. The big disappointment with McGuane's injury is that we've so far missed out on exactly this thing. I think he was precisely that kind of recruit. My only concern with Dempsey would be the work ethic, which I think is a critical part of the role that kind of recruit would ideally play.

Lisle hasn't panned out, but I think he was more of a KPF prospect rather than a role player, and you'd expect a higher chance of boom or bust. Clarke, we developed off the rookie list and he is working out brilliantly IMO. Moloney was fantastic last year, but has struggled with injuries this year. In total, I still think it was good recruiting.

Also, I'm not suggesting we don't develop our own. I'm suggesting that that takes time and the kids need some mature support. If we are going to top up to help out with that, I would rather it be with effective role players than pipe-dream chases of more glamorous options.
