I agree with what Kevvo has said above.

I'd support getting both Goldsack and Dempsey. They aren't world beaters but they can play their roles well. I think they are much better options than O'Keffee.

With Staker's injury problems over the years Goldsack could come in handy down back or up forward.

Dempsey certainly has his fair share of injury concerns but at his best he would easily be a lock down back for us.

Both are in the right age bracket too. We wouldn't be chasing them to win a premiership, but they can certainly help us out while our younger boys are developing.

Not a big fan of Dempsey for a variety of reasons, but Goldsack would certainly have a lot to offer. Particularly if McGuane is crocked.

I think though that internally he's rated very highly within Collingwood, so we might be surprised at how much money it'd take to prise him away.

I was speaking of Xavier.

The Voss reign shows that recycling/recruiting role players rarely works out.

I wouldnt say it rarely works, it depends on the players to start with. Clarke was known to be injury prone but he cost us next to nothing, so was worth a punt. I think the teams that do well in recycling are good at identifying the right players to perform a role in their team. Think generally this works better with seasoned experienced players as well.

We've done well with Moloney I think, and I would expect the club to be pretty aggressive with FA targets as they dont cost us anything. Leppa would pick the right players to fit into his vision well I think, dont think he would bring a 26 year old to the club unless he had a position in the best 22 they could fill.

I don't understand the obsession with recruiting role players. It hasn't worked with Lisle, Clarke, Moloney et al.

What's wrong with developing our own?

Moloney worked out extremely well last year.

Clarke(Xavier) was always known as an injury prone player that we got for nothing. Lisle was a hopeful candidate to take over Brown.

I guess Dempsey would be a bit of a risk with his injuries but he can certainly play.

Goldsack is a talented player, no doubt about it. You pretty well know what you are going to get from him each week.

I think it shows that you need to have a good understanding of what your list needs, and need to target specific players for those needs.

With a lot of our failed recruits, we possibly misunderstood where we were at as a team (the post-2009 intake), misunderstood their abilities (Lisle), misunderstood our needs (Martin) or our needs changed (Moloney). There's another, large group who just kept getting injured.

On the other hand, with Trent West we knew exactly what we wanted and exactly what we were getting. He came with limited upside but is making a significant contribution.

I'm not a big fan of Dempsey. He's quick, but his disposal and defensive work are questionable.

Damien Hardwick doesn't like this.

Keefe, please. We're better off rebuilding through quality drafting than poaching NQR's who will be asking for above market rate to relocate to Brissy.

Geez, he's from Gympie, anywhere not within 30km of Gympie's CBD is heaven!

Staker gave us several years good service.
Raines gave us several years good service.
Buchanan gave us not much.
X. Clarke gave us nothing.

Mixed bag there.

Looking at other clubs:
Grigg, Houli, Chaplin and Hampson have all been solid for Richmond.
Derickx, McGlynn, Kennedy, Richards, Laidler and Shaw have all been solid or better for Sydney.
Hombsch, Monfries and Schulz at Port.
etc

It's about getting the right players, not just throwing out a whole category of talent because we had a 50% success rate. That 50% success rate is higher than most clubs' drafting hit rate.

I guess you could add Maguire and Moloney to your above list under Vossy's reign.

Could include Jacob and possibly Jenkins at Adelaide,

Jono O’Rourke & Lachie Plowman are two decent targets in my opinion, both haven't played much footy but were taken high in the draft. If we can try and hammer a deal out and get one of them for our third pick + Polkinghorne/Bewick I'd be happy. That is in a perfect world though and is unlikely to happen. I feel as if someone like Bewick could appeal to GWS and could have some decent trade currency if we are looking to strike a deal anywhere.

If we come last we should only be talking to the players and get them to nominate for the PSD

Bennell and Boston are two that I would be targeting from the Suns. Bennell if he decided to leave would be going to WA no doubt... I have been impressed by Boston and he knows where to find the goals. Great foot skills and is a good size just needs to overcome some injury concerns he has had the last 2 years.

Is Shane Kersten getting much of a go at Geelong so far this year?

Post season last year when his name was mooted, I got the impression he was set for a starting role, although in the few games I've seen the Cats play this year, I can't say I have seen him. Injured or just unable to break into their side? Following Podsially's departure, I thought he would have been all set.

Jarryd Blair anyone?

How many short blokes can we have in the same side? Already have Zorko, Green and Taylor.

Injured IIRC.

Lately Leppa has come out saying that the next few years there will be a large turn over of players. I know from previous posts from others that we pretty well much every year anyway for awhile now. He said that he trusts the system of the draft in replenishing our list. Earlier in the year he also talked about bringing in players via trade or free agency to balance our list and fill requirements on the team. I would assume that over the next two to three drafts that we will focus on bringing in quality players this way then look to trade after this. However, with the release of our ageing players and those who wouldn't be top 22/24/26 players we should have a fairly healthy war chest. The more I think about it I would hope that we would be utilising the draft and trade in unison. We, sadly, most probably will have the first pick in the pre-season draft and I think we should play hard and use it. We might burn some bridges with other teams at the trade table but look at the position we are in. We should front end some contracts as the age profile of our list is young and will need to up their contract in the next few years. I hope we go hard at a few top line players and have no qualms about it at all.

The 3 unrestricted free agents we should be targeting this year are James Frawley, Tyson Goldsack and Shane Edwards. If we could land those 3 it would add significantly to our list. All are 100 game plus players that add experience to our young list without being to old themselves. Handy considering the games of experience that we will be losing at years end. Trade target wise Nat Fyfe would be the biggest one to target that's out of contract but almost no chance there. A couple of other out of contract players that might be more realistic targets I like are Tom lynch from Adelaide, Mason Shaw and Jono O'Rourke.

Shane Edwards just re-signed with Richmond for 2 years.

Frawley will not want to come to us. He'll want to play in an obviously successful team like Hawthorn or stay with Melbourne. I don't understand why we would offer him that much more than Melbourne (who have heaps of cap space), that he would relocate to Queensland to play in another losing side. Geez we'd have to offer him bucketloads. I really hope we don't get him.

Kersten and Membrey play the same sort of game as Paine. If the club isn't happy with Paine's progress/likelihood of making it, I could easily see us targeting them.

Dempsey and Goldsack are two that have been mentioned a fair bit here. Dempsey is a very good player imo, except he's injury prone, contracted beyond 2014, in poor form, will come at a cost, plays wing/half back where we have young players who probably will push for selection soon, isn't versatile and could have a drug ban soon.
Goldsack on the other hand, only an ordinary player, is in good form, versatile, can fill the holes where our young talls need more time and is a free agent.
Goldsack is the better target imo, even though Dempsey is better.

Goldsack is a gap filler that you can use to fill in a hole in the list. We have so many holes I don't think it's going to be worth the cash to lure him away.
