Oh dear...

EDIT: Oh, one page late. Was misled by the lack of discussion on this page. Not good news, I would have thought, notwithstanding the spin about it being 'minor'.
If it had to happen it's not the worst timing possible. At least he's had a full pre season and should be ready for round 1.

Rat has had a massive pre-season, have heard from several sources that he has a real drive to make himself better. He was up in Hong Kong during his break late last year, and was absolutely flogging himself to ensure he hit pre-season in tip top shape. Looking forward to him cementing himself in the side this year, just oozes class.

Fingers crossed he is able to bring this fitness base into the season. Showed he could play last year, but perhaps lacked the fitness base required due to an interrupted season/pre-season.

Hope he gets more oportunities this year to really put his stamp on the side.

Depends how you define 'full pre season'. To me, that's being fit from the start of training to the start of the season - not having knee surgery in February. Naturally, I hope that all this optimism is borne out but I'm taking it with a pinch of salt. It's dampened my expectations for CC a bit.

- when he first joined the club his attention to his rehab was very good to the point he joined the main group 2 weeks early

- the approach to Troy's pre-season was to build his strength and durability by completing as many sessions as possible, running times for this pre-season is secondary

- since joining the main group has not missed a session and is a lot stronger

- coming into the club our culture around elite standards has been a real learning curve for him however recieves feedback and tough love well and Betts has been mentoring him

- players at times star gaze when watching him during match simulation drills as he ices every opportunity
I missed this earlier - many thanks

the difference is the hard-core fitness load is probably all finished now, he shouldn't lose much of the tank he built over that period, that's the positive.

if he has a knee op 6 weeks ago he probably misses some crucial stages of aerobic training. I'd even hold a sneaky suspicion that he's had a little non-threatening issue for a while and they've chosen to leave fixing it until after the heavy training phases.

Onka Valley played our SANFL top ups yesterday too I think, think they were allowed to have families and such go along.

Some encouraging signs from the match. If Shooter can maintain the rage that is fantastic. Everyone pretty much up and about, selection for the NAB Cup is gonna be really tough.

Hartigan is a no. I coached in the Amateurs and am no genius, but this one is a no brainer. Play against Hartigan - opposition game plan simple; isolate Hartigan and his man one on one anywhere, say 35 metres from goal and the game is ours boys. Do we really want to deal with that all his career?

Going back on this... According to CD, Hartigan won 35% of defensive 1v1 contests, the 9th highest percentage in the AFL of the top 50 players for contests defended.

Where he struggles is the rebounding aspect of the game. As it says here, he wins 48% of his possessions from a contest, that being the highest % of any key defender. His man leads him to the ball, but honestly, that really isn't that big of a deal when you're a fullback.

Wow that's outstanding. He had a few howler free kicks against as well - which happens at full back i guess.

He is a beast, is quick and a great stopper. His kicking action is surprisingly good, i really rate him and think our defence is set for years to come.

Talia and Hartigan as the keys with Lever the drop off creative third tall can turn into an outstanding backline.

Any FA or trade targets have to be elite mids or mids with elite potential.

I think that when he came back from the sanfl his focus was on his opponent. I've posted a few times that I'd like to see him kill more aerial contests when he's in the vicinity. I think he just needed to be reset as part of his total development after a few absolute howlers. He had been quite attacking prior to that and it was mostly that mindset that caused the turnovers.

And he will be straight line running in 2 weeks and probably on alter G before that

More time to work on his scotty thompsons

Yeah thats another handy thing about him. He's quick for a bloke of his size, which means he can go with the Ryders and the Nic Nats of the competition if he needs to.

Agree kicking action is solid, it's just all between the ears for Kyle.

Him and Talia are limited in what they provide offensively, I will agree with that. It would be nice if either one of them had greater offensive skills, but Id much rather have very capable defenders neutralising the dangerous forwards, and then worrying about the ball hitting the deck and what to do next.

The year before he averaged twice as many possessions - think it was more than 17 per game , went into his shell and became a stopper in 2015 following the early season howlers

Can end up having a good mix of defence and offence once his confidence and decision making is sound

Look, I'm 50, so probably not worth much as a comparison. But I will venture there anyway.:) I can stop running for, say, a fortnight, and resume without much of a drop-off. Just one more week though and I notice it significantly. A month and I'm off the cliff. You can definitely bring it up reasonably quickly but it still takes time. Charlie is 30 years younger, at an elite level of fitness I can only dream about, and has all the resources of the football club to keep him ticking over while he's not running, but this is still a setback and will have some sort of an impact.
