If you agree that they would still win without those KPP players, then by extension you are agreeing with the assertion that their midfield/flankers are where their true strength lies.
Not at all. This is a ridiculous argument... You said comfortably win to which I DISAGREE.... Our list is also the worst in the AFL at the moment and the Hawks have the best. They are a well rounded all-star side and you, quite frankly, should be committed!

One year can mean a lot for some of these kids.

Totally agree.

These kids are going into the system way, way too early. Essentially they go from junior footy, skipping under19s, to senior footy (and that's counting VFL) in the blink of an eye. They haven't got the bodies or endurance.

American Football, they go into the Collegiate system and come out as mature 21 year olds.

Personally think the draft age should be raised to 19 minimum.

Just to summarize:

If hawthorn have our midfield/flankers but their KPP they lose

If hawthorn have our KPP but their midfield/flankers, they win

My point is that their midfield/flankers is their greatest strength.

Here's a novel thought, how about we aim to have both (really good midfield/flankers & KPP) ???

I just have the impression that the club is not in a position to be picking up players with inherent risks (injury history) or who are raw (eg. McKay). Don't get me wrong, I love the McKay highlights video and Burton is a talent but both seem like icing on the cake type players. We need nuts and bolts type players at this stage of our development. Guys that aren't afraid to crack in hard and find the ball and will be around the action (and not wasting away up forward where the ball may hardly even go). Guys like Francis, Oliver, Mathieson, Balic, Dunkley, Partington fit the profile. Build a competitive midfield first IMO.

Yes - and KPP's take longer to mature.

So the preference is to start with them.

(But not stretch and take them for the sake of it!!!!)

I also think the game is changing to a faster more mobile style eg Roughie, Cameron, Gunston, Stringer.

I would therefore prefer us to pick Curnow, Francis style players ahead of Collins/McKay etc.

There's more then one way to skin a cat. Sure the Hawks are the benchmark at the moment but like all teams they will be over taken. The only thing all good teams have in common is that they have good players all over the ground. We literally have about three or four players on our list that guaranteed best 22 players in five years time. For mine we are way too early into this rebuild not to be taking best available and trying to pick players because of the position that they play.

You pick some hard battles Geoff, what is the point of this argument? Sounds like an argument for arguments sake. Personally I hope we get a forward with 8 and then 2 mids

Weitering
Weideman / Burton /Curnow
Oliver
Gresham

Didn't intend on starting an argument, just stated an opinion that wasn't received very well haha

Of course. My initial point is that ideally I would like to see (depending on quality) 1 forward, 1 defender, 3 goal kicking mid types from the national draft.

I have a bit of faith from the brief highlights that I have seen, that silvagni may be that forward.

If we are confident that we can develop silvagni into a gunston type, then we can look at trading in another ready to go forward (Tomlinson) in a year or two, and potentially have a midfield/flank/wings that can boast as many quality contributors as any other side

If we manage to get Tomlinson next year, our best 22 could look like this in 2017

Buckley Weitering Tuohy
Docherty Rowe Plowman

Kerridge Cripps Boekhorst
Kreuzer Murphy Oliver

Hibberd Tomlinson Gibbs
Sumner Silvagni Gresham

Graham, Byrne, Thomas, Jaksch

Provided BB can get guys like Buckley, Sumner and Jaksch up to a good standard, that is beginning to look like a decent amount of contributors

Weitering is a lock at 1, then we have SOSOS so that is already 2 KPP player so at least 2 of our top 20 picks should be mids.

Jack Silvagni should come with no additional pressure other than his surname.. lets be honest, he is a key forward who if he didnt have the last name Silvagni probably would not have been drafted at all, and certainly not rated in the top 30 players in the draft.

He is very much a work in progress development player that is long odds to make it at AFL level.

Not sure why he nominated this year TBH.

Barely played any junior footy..............and he'll always end up at our lot under F/S.

What's another year playing juniors???

Of all the top prospects Harry is the one I want the least, which is why I'm sure we'll take him at 8. Probably ahead of someone like Francis or Parish just to piss me off.

I do hope that if Francis is still available at pick 8, we take him.

jack's a dud Thy! Didn't you hear the news? Lol

That is a long way from what I said, it was more on the pressure and expectation of a raw 18yo kid to somehow be the saviour of our non existent forward line when the reality is the Jack will be lucky to play senior football for at least 2 years.

I think its better to have him in an AFL system, look at what that has done for someone like Jessie Hogans development.
