This is the key for me.

I know there was talk about options to get him back soonest from the medical team when he broke the foot.

I just don't need him a boot in 3 weeks time as the screws and pins have flared up in his foot.

There is just no need to rush this. They go ultra conservative with every other player, Mitch should be no different. not saying they have not been but based on the timelines publicized, this soon does not match ultra conservative IMO.

This isn't directed at you Daz, but one of my gripes about sports fandom is armchair injury diagnosis. Particularly when fans say things that suggest the medical staff have been flippant about managing risks and the like.

There is simply no way in the world that Duncan will be rushed back. If he plays that is a brilliant sign because it means that all of the medical evidence suggests he's fine and there's no risk. It is their job to make these calls and they will do that job thoroughly. You've got to have trust in that.

Agree with CE. Mitch Duncan is a crucial young 100 game player whose draft mates have been decimated by injury, and who had a serious foot injury. There is NO WAY they would play him if there was a risk. Especially when it comes to feet....

Duncan has an interview up on geelongcats.com.au: http://www.geelongcats.com.au/video/2015-07-17/duncan-speaks-on-return

He says the surgeon originally said he might play after 6 weeks so returning after 9, as he is, has been a conservative approach.

He has been training for a month and noted he has six preseasons under his belt so his fitness is not an issue.

Great information CE.
As you said elsewhere, we have to learn to trust our team structure with decisions like playing MD after 9 weeks out. As Mitch said, he has done a real lot of preparation, and they would not play a player with a screw in his metatarsal before they thought it was safe to do so.
And he clearly ticked all the boxes to prove to them he was ready.
His full preseason has held him in good stead, a "luxury" Varcoe never had when copped the same injury.

New injury list on AFL.com.au and it's looking wonderfully small! Key points ('previously' indicates what was on the list last week)

* Gone from the list are Cockatoo, Cowan, Cunico, Duncan, Selwood (as suspended), Menzel, and Vardy - 7 off the list!
* Clark is showing as 1-2 weeks (previously 2 weeks)
* Delaney 2-4 weeks (previously 4-6 weeks)
* HMac 2 weeks (previous 3 weeks)
* Rivers on the list as a test (knee)
* McCarthy (indefinite) and Stanley (season) no change

Delaney another Hmac and from Nth too.....why get players with well know history of injuries....doesnt make sense
Low risk gamble given he's filling a rookie spot. The fact we recruited him while injured suggests to me we'll keep him into 2016 as we surely can't have been relying on him this year.

According to Medical Room today, he's due to play after another couple of weeks' practice.

Cant really compare Hmac and Delaney on the cost front.
Poles apart. One picked up with large year of contract left and then got another 2 years, albeit a lower rate, the other a one year rookie pick.

While the outcomes may be the same the cost analysis is massively different.

So not much movement on the injury front this week.

* Clark still 1-2 weeks
* Delaney still 2-4 weeks
* HMac now 1-2 weeks (previous 2 weeks)
* River still test
* Stanley and McCarthy still indefinite/season

Nice to have a boring injury list.
Another week, another injury list update. About the only movement is Mitch Clark is now listed as 1 week (?) and Delaney is updated to 2 weeks.

Also a new injury update video on the Cats website, essentially just talking about Menzel and Vardy - both gaining confidence in their bodies and gaining fitness. From the conversation it would appear they are still going to take it slow with Menzel and give him another few weeks in the VFL - but this is merely my impression rather than what was stated.
