Following Hawthorn in the late 40s and early 50s doesn't breed for a supporter with a lot of confidence, and I certainly fall into that category. However, I do expect us to win on Saturday. We have only played West Coast twice this season, both in the west. The score is 1 - 1. We won the first, which gave Simmo enough to work on the beat us on the second occasion. That loss should have given Clarko enough ammunition for a counter attack. Add to that, it's on our home ground, which is far wider than the sardine tin known as Subiaco,o_O Domain, we should win.

Over to you Clarko.:thumbsu:

Yes basically, we need to handball instead of blindly hacking out of congestion, which happened too often in the QF.

Speed of ball movement and low darts rather than high floaters is key for mine. Get it to the fat side of contests as quick as possible, then run and carry using our unrivalled kicking skills.

Saw quite a few kicks along the ground (basically to avoid oncoming smother) on Friday night. Maybe this could be something they're trying?

In the QF I can't believe how many hacked blind kicks we did out of contested situations. We won't be doing that again I hope. I suggest we need to flip the ball around with hands more from stoppages/congestion a little more than we did that night.

Can't afford to kick high long bombs in unless they're at the top of the square (15-20 metres out) and we have players at the drop of the ball.

I'd be backing our players skill to shred the web :)

I agree 100%. The way to beat the web is to handball through it or kick around or over it. You can only kick over it if they screw up and bring the last line too far up and close to the middle lines of defence....say about 50-55 meters out from the ball rather than 65 meters from the ball. We don't have contested markers while they do, which means kicking long to a contest won't be a good option. I think hand balling through it and kicking around it are the two options that Clarko will have the guys practice during the week.

Are you really wearing white shorts? That's a bit shit. Both teams should wear their full strip like every grand final.

Where's that been confirmed? Only heard about the jumper so far. Brown shorts is the preference but not having to wear the clash is already a huge win.

Handballing is exactly what West Coast want the Hawks to do. The Hawks need to still use their kicking, and the width of the MCG will make it more effective.

The biggest difference I noted between the Freo final and the West Coast one is the West Coast defence play much more in your face. Freo allow the Hawks more time and space. As soon as Hawthorn handball West Coast will press to smother them.

Smothering this hand ball game plan is exactly what Collingwood did to Geelong in 2010.

Hawks need to stretch West Coast with space and wear them down. Not invite pressure by making the ball live.

The issue is that the marking talls for the Eagles allow the smalls to get sucked up to the contest. If we can't beat them in the air or on the lead, we need to stack the defence.

West Coast's twitter account confirmed it.

Makes sense, given our predominant colour is lighter than the Eagles'. Our 4 Clarkson GF's we've worn brown shorts, so it's not so bad!

This is in part Hawks not hitting their targets as well in the Qual as they did in the Prelim. Also my memory of the qual was this.

1st quarter - even tussle, both teams showed signs of nerves. Was strange to see Hawks like that considering they have so much experience. In the semi and prelim Hawks started the games much better and more settled.

2nd quarter - Hawks created opportunities but squandered many. Failed to hit targets and were hurt on the turnovers. At least 2-3 2 goal turnarounds in this quarter.

3rd quarter - throughly outplayed.

4th quarter - Hawks started to play more freely and started to score. Not sure if because Eagle had shut up shop.

Basically I think if Eagles want to get in the Hawks faces Hawks are good enough in close to get it done. I did notice in the Norf WC game last night that WC do have more numbers around the ball as well as their web set up. Norf let them in by not hitting those targets in congestion, if they had of they would have been able to find players in space.

Who knows. I'll leave it to Clarko to figure it out. One thing I would suggest is that Clarko will have plans. I was thinking last night if Norf did make it, how prepared would the team have been for them. Norf would have had a plan for Hawks which is very different to how WC play.

However some questions for Clarko? Did they fail in the qual partly because the game was at Subi. Would the plans be more effective at the MCG?

Not suggesting we try and handball through the web

Never mind, a couple of people seem to get what I'm saying

I can only see 1 change for the GF;
Shoey > Gunston

Based on his performance for Box Hill I can't see Ceglar replacing Hale.

Langford very slight chance to replace Hartung for the Sub role.
Umm, the way you've written it means Shoey is better than Gunston. SO that would by no change. ;)

This is Melbourne we are talking about though...

Could end up being 15 degrees for all we know
It will be btw 24-28 degrees. The former with light south to south westerlies or the latter with moderate north easterly winds. All depends on the how strong the High pressure system sitting over Vic, is.
I'll streak the MCG if the Melbourne maximum on GF day is 15 degrees.
