Reckon that's as good as we could possibly hope for in the circumstances. Nice work team.

^^^ This

Geelong really could have dragged this out and bent us over considering Lachie's contract status.

We might have had our eye on this year's pick 9, but think this is a very solid outcome given the circumstances.

What is the Geelong pick projected to be? With good coaching they're a premiership threat surely?

Look at that 22:

Rivers, Taylor, Enright
Mackie, Henderson, Caddy

Motlop, JSelwood, Duncan
Smith, Dangerfield, SSelwood

Bartel, Hawkins, Kelly
DMenzel Clark Stokes

Guthrie, Horlin-Smith, Blicavs, Thurlow, Cockatoo etc

Strong squad on paper. I see them finishing 4-6.

They finished 10th this year (pick 9).

Without any trades, I felt they might have had a slight backwards progression in 2016 (finish 8-14). Rivers, Kelly, Johnson gone. Other veterans like Mackie, Enright on way out.

Adding Dangerfield, Henderson, Selwood, Maybe Zac Smith will help. I think they should make finals next year but don't expect them to finish top 4.

So, range becomes 5-12 next year = pick 7-14. If next year's draft is stronger, even pick 14 isn't a terrible outcome.

I think they are a strong top 4 chance. They've got some decent existing talent that should improve further (Caddy, Blicavs, Cockatoo, Horlin-Smith, DUncan etc etc). Lachie fills a clear need and Danger is a game changer. Zac Smith would be a great addition too. Only thing stopping them is how they handle the loss of Kellie and Stevie J

But I think this is an ok outcome at picks 17-18. 14-16 is a good outcome and anything lower than that is a bonus.

I read this on the Age Trade page. Seems straightforward to me.

Here's something brought to my attention by Ed Hunter: we actually know exactly how the AFL's 'mysterious' free agency compensation system works, and it was all outlined in this article. Here's the key takeaway: it's pretty easy for clubs to work out how much their players will get them in free agency.

If a player's new contract is in the top 5 per cent of AFL wage earners aged 25 or older: 1st round pick

If a player's new contract is in the top 10 per cent of AFL wage earners aged 25 or older: end of 1st round pick

If a player's new contract is in the top 15 per cent of AFL wage earners aged 25 or older: 2nd round pick

If a player's new contract is in the top 20 per cent of AFL wage earners aged 25 or older: end of 2nd round pick

Easy. Does this dismiss complaints around the free agency system being a "chook raffle", as I think West Coast's CEO memorably termed it.

I agree. + having 2 first rounders locked away (for now) in a perceived 'stronger' draft is a fantastic result. Cats seem to be the best club around to deal with... no BS, just get shit done. well done to all parties.... who's next :thumbsu:

From my understanding, West Coast were complaining about their Selwood compo because they rated Scooter according to a whole bunch of metrics that are not encompassed by the offer that Geelong made (especially since it seems that Selwood took a pay cut to get to the Cattery). That seems like a fair complaint to me.

personally, I think that compensation should also incorporate the offer presented by the club a player is leaving - that would more likely reflect the value of that player to said club. Ad should stop future whinging - if a club truly values a player they may lose then their counter-offer should really reflect that.
