If it's being done to fit in a contract, I suspect it would be a new contract not one already in place, cause if I remember correctly the AFL has to approve all contracts and part of the assessment is whether they can actually afford it in their current cap.

So Dixon would fit, but payrises to guys coming out of contract would require a reshuffle.

Just because they are announcing it now, doesn't mean the deal was done recently, could have been done in September, they just waited to announce it so they could include it in their xmas announcements. It's not exactly a signing people were looking out for so would be easy to keep it hidden.
