I'm not exactly heading down to the TAB to load up on us to win the 2016 flag on the back of this news, but he'll be better than Harry O

Will he? I'm not sure that he is a better player, sadly. I'd like not to see either of them in our 2016 lineup. A guy like Bennell is risky, but talent-wise at least you can justify it. If we're giving up a second rounder for Melksham, that's a poor deal for us. If we can't land genuinely good players as FA or trades, I'd rather we hit the draft and tried to bring up our own.

I don't mind him, good on you guys for getting him. Now you just got to deal we the worse team at the trade table though.
Sorry i'm missing something. Who are you referring to?

Melksham's contract size is really not the issue. Average player payment is $230,000 pa. Generally to bring in a player from another club you're going to have to pay overs, and I highly doubt $170k is going to be the different over the next few years between us being able to sign certain players and not, especially with the amount of dead weight we still have to cut.
Melksham is a below average player for one so $230000 is too much for him. and if we are trying to bring players from other clubs in then why don't we target above average players?

Just heard a rumour that we've made another play for Danger and he's trying to decide between us and the Cats.

Tbh over Dangerfield, would rather keep that big money for Hogan

Yeah nah. If Hogan wants to stay he will and it won't be because of money. Dangerfield is the now.

We'd have money for Hogan regardless.

I'm also over the Dangerfield rumours, he's not coming here.

Whilst I think he is about a 1% chance to come here, I do find it interesting he hasn't named Geelong yet. Makes me think the Hawks might be in play for him.

With what money?

Because of the stupid afl rules it's likely the Hawks are only paying a couple hundred thousand more than us in their salary cap
Sewell and Franklin have left plus lake this year an potentially hale aswell
They could afford to match the Geelong offer

If that happens then the AFL is totally FUBAR. I'll just retire gracefully from this sport. Melbourne can forget ever winning a flag if teams as strong as Hawthorn can sign superstars every year for minimal outlay.

I guess Premierships can out weigh any currency

They would have got stuff all from Sewell leaving and Frawley took up a significant chunk of that Franklin money, let's not forget the likes of Langford, Puopolo, Bruest, Smith, etc that need to be extended or just recently extended.

Either that or playing for Hawthorn has some other fringe benefit that we aren't privy to...

You only have to skim 20k per season off every contract to have 800 for danger ... I'm sure they can back end it for when Mitchell hodge etc retire

Frawley isn't getting all of the Franklin money, Lake won't be there next year either IMO. Say thats about 500k free, they could easily free up a little bit more if they really wanted to.
Hale retired. 350K + 300K if lake retires.
If Schoenmakers goes to Freo, thats another 200K.
We will be able to create the money. We will also dangle the premierships in front of him as Gibson said convinced him and some others to come.
+ whatever free cap space we have now(which is not all that much I don't think).
Overall that's a possible capspace of 850K cleared up + current cap space.
We definitely can create the space if we wanted to.
