Is it worth chasing FA just for the sake of it?

Are you saying Rance isn't any good and wouldn't improve us as a side?

How many quality free agents will even consider a move west? We chased Varcoe last season.

Not long ago the Eagles drafting policy was 'best available' no matter what position they played. It served us well for quite an extended period.

Why wouldn't the Eagles chase the 'best available' free agent willing to move West?

I explained previously why I would chase Rance. He is quality, an All Australian key back man. We've been decimated this season in the KP backs and it is now a weakness in our list.

McGovern looks like a gem who can play back and forward, right now we can only play him back. With the flexibility of starting McGovern forward it means we don't need to pick another KP forward, we can play another mid in the side. We can allow Darling to play further up the ground and rest our rucks on the bench, not forward. That adds even more run onto the ground.

If in this off season we can add Rance as a free agent and a Conilgio through a trade plus retain our first round pick to use on another mid we will have gone a long, long way to filling our needs.

Won't cut it.

We should be looking beyond Coniglio, anyway.

There's always a starting point in any negotiation

I'm not knocking Rance - far from it. If he can fit into TPP without disruption going forward then no problems

Agreed.

The issue is whether a second-rounder alone would get Conglio. Or Conigs.

I wonder if we're having a good, hard sniff at Jarrad Jansen right now.

Interesting type. Definitely flown under the radar. If he doesn't get much of a crack this season he could be a cheap pickup, big bodied mid and ex pick 36. Geelong are astute recruiters.

Indeed. How good was Bedford!

(Interestingly Breust and Suckling were taken with picks 47 and 81 of the Rookie Draft that year after we took Bedford and Cockie with 2 and 18).

Jansen looks decent though.

I think that just shows the club has the wrong mindset and still over-values the list. You don't give up your youth unless you are near a premiership. If he was a free agent - then sure - but giving up a talented 18yo kid for a 27yo player would be a mistake IMO given where we are in the cycle.
Think we dodged a bullet there, don't need another talented but lazy indigenous player!

What's the draft looking like re: inside mids?

The reason is that you draft new players every year and they cost the same each year. Clubs can only afford one absolute gun free agent signing that will cost 700k plus, I would MUCH rather we use that signing on a quality mid rather than a tall defender.

If we didnt have a salary cap then definitely get Rance but the money spent on him will mean we cannot get Bennell, OMeara or whoever.

I don't see salary cap as an issue at the Eagles. Just look at who we could delist this year and next. McGinnity, Tunbridge, Butler, Main, Wellingham will be taking a pay cut or be leaving, Hutchings, Hill and Karpany.

S Selwood may look to move as well or will stay for less because he's been injured for basically two years.

AND I forgot Waters.

I just hope we didn't go silly with Priddis after winning the Brownlow last year.

Again I will point out how often do quality free agents who will move west become available?

I take your point but free agency has only been in for what, 3yrs? I am sure the club has its eyes on the numerous West Aussies at Gold Coast and GWS who will have to be underpaid in their prime to keep them all and therefore should be attainable.

NN is getting paid quite a bit. I wouldn't assume we have loads of cap space
