I don't blame him in the slightest if he was shying away from contact at times, given his arm break was so bad that it was likened to a car crash incident and he had ongoing nerve troubles as a result of it..

And as much as Lonie cracks in, he had a few moments of avoiding contact this year as well. One I remember (in NZ vs Carlton I think) was when he ducked his head going for an overhead mark, dropped it, got his own crumb, snapped a goal, and was pissed off with himself for the dropped mark. It's natural for these 18/19/20 year olds with light frames to be a contact shy at times until they get enough meat on the bones to compete with some of the beasts they're going up against. Look at Whitfield from GWS, one of the softest players in the comp.

The only 'premature handout' here is you writing him off after two injury affected years.

I know you were defending Eli with this post, but on Lonie, I was at this game (see link) watching from the other end of the ground and the sound of this collision was WAY worse than the one with Roo (which happened right in front of me). BIG BALLS for a kid his age and size.

Wowee!!!

I just lay down to catch up on the last ten pages. It was all a bit ho-hum and then - BANG! Stav, MG and BS confirm that all that potential hickey chat wasn't so far off the mark after all.

So, if we can keep 5 (matho) 13 (BAP) get Carlisle, freeman and upgrade sincs, we have made off like absolute bandits!!

From what I heard Freeman was never about $$$$, but fairness. Collingwood lowballed him.

Dont know much about Ben Kennedy can someone enlighten?

He's a South Australian dwarf who was offered up in the GWS pre draft thing that I thing Hogan came in? Looked a million bucks as a junior but seems a bit like Toumpas where he doesn't seem to be great at the next level.

A competent ruckman makes the Dogs so SO much more dangerous...

Transfers in the EPL are blocked all the time because club brass don't want to make rivals stronger.... I'm not sure why we would.

Hopefully it makes us stronger still. Soccer is a very different sport we cant recruit a player from Spain or trade a player to the Germany

FWIW I don't get too upset over anything these days. Just don't get the logic that Hickey is more dispensable than Eli.

As for our window...

The plan was never set in stone for starters.

The whole argument about age bracket etc is a fallacy just as much as the argument that we can somehow grab a gun via FA when it suits us or that we can get player X in 2017 because they are coming out of contract. It's all fanciful stuff IMO.

To say that it won't matter if we are caught short in the ruck next year because we won't win games is stupid IMO. what about the year after? At this stage there are no guarantees that any of Longer, Hickey or Pearce or whoever will make the cut.

Reality is that with the nabbing of Goddard, DMack, Lonie and a few other bargains, or rebuild is ahead of time IMO. Add Carlisle and the ongoing improvement of the kids and we'll be rising sooner than 2018.

Doesn't sound like there is a lot of support on the dogs board for even the first rounder for Hickey.....

I could see the dons taking Hickey for Carlisle (even though they would consider it unders) and maybe at a stretch Dogs for pick 13 for Hickey, but pick 13 +a promising player feels like a big stretch unless its hickey and our second for for Dogs 1st and Hoodrat

Hrovat is very small and seems to have dropped out of calculations under Bevo. I wonder what the catch is with him. They aren't going to ditch a gun they picked with a first round pick.

Ok, here's my go...

Hickey + #45 ---> (Bulldogs) #13
Freeman + #63 (Collingwood) ----> #26
Carlisle + Essendon's 3rd round (2016) ---> St Kilda 1st round (2016)

[Or some variation of the above.... e.g.

Hickey + #26 ---> (Bulldogs) #13 + Bulldogs 3rd pick (2016)
Freeman + (Collingwood) ----> #43 + 3rd round pick (2016)
Carlisle + Essendon's 3rd round (2016) ---> St Kilda 1st round (2016)]

Either option leaves us with:-

2015 - Carlisle, Freeman, draft: #5, #13, Sinclair late upgrade; OUT: Hickey
2016 - 2nd round pick, 3rd rounds x2; OUT: 1st round pick

IMO that would be an incredible bit of trading which would NOT actually screw other clubs.

Don't we have pick 23 & 41? Where are you getting pick 26 & 43?
Are you adding in a Compo picks for Leuenberger and Redden?

If Hickey can get us pick 13 then we have to take it surely?

Just tell them that it's a 'bold' trade and 'very Bevo' and they will drink it up.

Pretty sure that GC have an end of 1st round compo pick, then comes the Danger and Lueuy compos... which may not happen of course... but others might... so the exact #s are guesses of course.

I can't see Hickey by himself getting us #13. He's a fringe player at a bottom 5 club. Compare with Stanley, who we got #21 for. Stanley was a regular starter.

I've been trying to keep up with this thread for weeks. I'm either going to lose my job or my missus is going to leave me!

Either outcome is okay as it will give me enough time to read Big Footy St Kilda!

Just on Hickey - Isnt he coming back from the same knee injury that has a few posters worried about O'Meara? The patella yeah?

If we swap Hickey for Carlisle we can always talk to them about Giles as well.

Or draft Gach Nyoun with our 3rd rounder - 2015 u18 AA ruck. Also from VIC Country with McCartin, Goddard, Matho etc

Could rookie list someone like Sam Tagliabue as a more mature option as well.

Not actively looking to move Hickey on but if that's the trade... well it's not a terrible one.

Mate, this dating of when we'll be winning games is total BS! Who says we have to not win until 2018?

Getting sick of this argument.

We'll be top 10 next year if we get a good run with injuries, and I assure you the club doesn't want to wait until 2018 before it plays finals.

Hawks would never of thought 2008 would of happened. Melbourne would of though 10 years ago they would be in contention again by now

The Afl has to change the draft order it's unfair for bottom teams to wait 18 draft spots for their next pick, The bottom 6 teams should get more help in the draft or it's going to take too long to be competitive.

are you drunk?

I'm not surprised! If we got a pick like 13 and then some for Hickey it would be an extraordinary result and the chance of it happening is very remote.

F@$@ yeah if this goes down and we have a good injury run we are top 8 its like the 22 under 22 with Newnes we all know what these guys can do. I for one can't wait for Richo to chew them out next year if they come close to playing like the last two rounds

I think you've all gone bloody loopy the last few years the way youre all taking about shipping off a required player like Hickey for a shot in the "good" but not elite part of the draft.
We get Carlisle out of it? Great! We are now down a high potential A grade ruckman who has shown he can kick goals and no closer to a list that will win us a flag. The two teams tomorrow both run two ruckmen. Not one. Two. We are lightish on ruck stocks as it is and injury to Longer is going to expose the hell out of us come finals in a couple of years.

So we draft a new ruck! Great! Too bad they wont be ready by that time. Trade one in? Well we better pony up that first rounder for him. Holmes and Pierce? Pierce hasnt exactly set the VFL on fire and Holmes is still a massive working progress that I think can come good but I would not be betting a flag on it.

Look if Bains and Trout could miraculously pull a top ten pick for Hickey then I could see it being a way to bring another elite mid in that could improve our list. But we are likely looking at mid teens at best and I am not confident in that at all.
