As St Kilda prepare to farewell one senior servant, another may have to settle for a one-year contract extension to continue his career next season.

Farren Ray, who has been dropped for Sunday's clash against the Sydney Swans at Etihad Stadium, is understood to have been offered a one-year deal.

However, it's believed he feels he can play on for at least two more seasons, and would prefer a contract endorsing that ambition.

Ray will turn 30 in March next year and a one-year contract offer would follow the model many clubs have embraced when it comes to contracting players aged 30 and older.

Sam Gilbert is also off contract but it's believed he has been told he will play on next year

Would love Farren to get another year. Solid servant of the club. He shouldn;t be played ahead of the young guys though if they are doing alright though.

i agree, 1 year is fair... 2 years is a bit silly given his age and his position

Really liked Farren Ray over the years but I just can't for the life of me see why we need to keep him on.

We have Riewoldt, Joey, Dempster, Fisher, Gilbert, Armitage, Steven and Geary. Not to mention guys like Weller and Roberton have become really good leaders and all our kids will be one year older.

I don't want to see us go down the Melbourne road but we have plenty of experience at the club. And look how well the Dogs have gone this year after letting a few old blokes go.

With no retirements this year and Sinclair being elevated (and possibly Holmes) we will need 4 or 5 delisting and I feel we are better off taking a punt on one of our younger guys than sticking with a 30 year old that can't get a regular game.

Ive never been a fan of Ray.. he played well was it last year or the year before. But he has disposal deficiencies his whole career and cant effectivley dispose the ball under pressure which is an automatic disqualification for me now.. you just cant afford to have these types out there in the modern game. Clinton jones path.. i dont hate any saints past or present players but would not have been disapointed if he was given the tap this year.

I'd love love love for a big name, talented player - young of course- to come play for us over other teams.

If not, not really interested in low-range players that we are recruiting just because. Would much rather go to the draft and focus on doing that well, we've made that mistake too much before.

Unless the recruiters are sure that they have something - had my doubts when Roberton for instance was brought in, but he's virtually my favourite player now.
There is a kind of fiendish pleasure in getting Roberton (del FA), Membrey (del FA), Weller (del rookie) and Bruce (unused pick), basically for free. :D

I really cant see anything exciting happening this trade period .
Maybe Hall for our 2nd rounder and maybe a Out of contract player sliding to us with a late pick because his club panics last minute .
If we retain our 1st Pick and manage the above I think everyone would be saying WIN again for the Saints this trade period.

What are you talking about!? Don't you remember all the massive trades we did last year?! Like...

... um...

... Y'know...

... Uh...

All I remember is

Pick 1 = Paddy Mc Cartin

Pick 21 = Hugh Goddard

Pick 22 = Dan McKenzie

Pick 41 = Jack Lonie

Pretty Bloody Good me thinks. Glad we didn't trade any of those picks out

Hey man, I didn't say we did badly. I'm just fondly remembering the tons and tons and TONS of possible trading scenarios we worked out all last year, then the MAMMOTH amount of trades we hear rumours of, guessed at, etc, etc, during the ACTUAL trade period. And in the end? Nada. Kinda funny, is all.

Classic list-management play:

Offer the 30 year old a 1 year extension...happy to keep him for 1 extra year (knowing it'll be his last) at a discount rate, but don't mind if he finds a new home elsewhere!!

Still think Siposs & White shouldn't be delisted (maybe traded in Spencers case). Seems like such a waste of potential.

So how long do you hang on to players that don't make the most out of the potential ?

I'll tell Jack Steven you've delisted him then.

Id keep Siposs for sure.

He is a year younger than Markworth and has shown alot more in his time. If he could get a chance on the wing/hbf he would have a decent career IMO.

He goes well at VFL level but at AFL level I can't remember a player who fumbles more

If someone is happy to give Ray a 2 year contract, I'd be happy to let him go. Accept anything above a 3rd rounder for compensation, but would be happy enough to let him go on a free as well.
Agree with this. No offense to him, but I reckon Faz is kidding himself if he thinks he's getting a two year deal from us. He's not in the team at the mo and it's only likely to get harder from this point on, as the younger ones get more ready to make a strong impact in his roles (eg. Acres, Billings, McKenzie, Templeton, perhaps Murdoch and/or Markworth, plus anyone we draft/recruit this offseason) and if Gilbo and Roo continue to play on the wings next year. Think he'll be a ways back in the pecking order, so if he can get a two year deal from another club then I'd encourage him to take it and run.
