Went to the Crows v Dogs game and a few things stood out.

Dogs lost the game through poor decision making/execution that lead to turnovers and poor conversion in front of goal. These are two things we also do when we are playing badly and something we need to fix once we start playing finals.

Having said that Rob Murphy stood out due to his poise and kicking and is definitely the type of player we are missing from our squad. The sooner we get in a player like him, the better our squad will be.

Nathan Freeman has played 4 games of competitive footy in 2 years (none last year, 3 VFL games this year with his 4th game resulting in yet another brutal twang)....

Can someone explain to me why we should be excited about possibly recruiting this bloke?

Other than him being a pick 10 in the 2013 draft, it's got me stumped cos he literally cannot even get on the park

Gerard was pretty much the only one in the industry who called out Freo and Lyon for his appointment and calling it what it was: stealing a man's job. Mark Harvey had not been sacked, and there was no vacancy, and Whateley was the only one who was critical of Lyon and the Dockers for this.

On the other hand Hutchy was camped at Seaford calling us a rabble. Hutchy, of course, is the reason St Kilda had to divulge the names of the two players being investigated for sexual assault in 2004 after Hutchy went public with the wrong player's name.

How's that house of yours, Kosi?

Please. #sanctimonious. With love.

The club I would like to deal with initially is Gold Coast. They will have Pick 3, a pick for Charlie Dixon, and they already have a compensation at the end of the first, then they will have the 3rd pick in the 2nd and subsequent rounds. Maybe we should try and pick up Bennell after all, as he is probably the most talented player we have been linked to. If we gave them Pick 5, for Bennell and what they receive for Charlie Dixon, from somewhere in the middle of the first round, we. We could ontrade that to Essendon for Carlisle and their 2nd round pick, then use that for Freeman.

Freeman is a top 10 pick, we care about him a lot. There's a 0% chance Freeman is going to walk out on the club, the only way he goes to the saints is if you guys offer a fair trade... anything above pick 20 is a joke, despite his injury concerns.

I don't want to say that we've been waiting to bend you over at the trade table for five years, but we've been waiting to bend you over at the trade table for five years.

Honestly as dumb as this sounds, I'm excited about him because our recruiters have apparently identified him as a target.

I had NFI who Bruce, Lonie, Sinclair and McEnzie where before we picked them up, and look at them now!

The recruiters / talent scouts have absolutely killed it in the last 2 years.

If they think he's an undervalued target, I'm excited by him.

He plays like Dangerfield and his strengths (clearances (elite), speed (elite), endurance (almost elite), also has good (not elite) disposal) fit our needs and we could get him cheaply as he hasn't played a game yet due to injuries and he may want out due to lack of spots in Collingwood's midfield (their midfield is stacked, might even add Aish too).

He can't even get on the park though. At least all those blokes you mentioned were actually playing footy. I just googled Nathan Freemans name to find injury reports & news articles. To be honest, it sounds like a train wreck; his hamstrings are made of dental floss & he's undergone multiple surgeries to fix them all at the age of 20..... There's no way I'd be happy with us giving up anymore than a pick in the 3rd round for him.

I would like to do an initial trade with Gold Coast. They will have pick 3, a pick around the middle of the first round which they will get for Charlie Dixon, and the have a compensation pick from a previous year at the end of the first round. I would offer them pick 5 for Harley Bennell who I believe is the most talented of all the players we have been linked to, and the Pick they receive for Dixon, which we could ontrade for Carlisle and the Dons 2nd rounder,(,, 1 before our 2nd) use our second for Freeman, use the pick in the draft.

A former top 10 pick, a local Sandringham boy with elite speed and endurance who has been (unfairly) likened to Dangerfield might join a slow midfield, all for minimal cost in personal terms, and likely for a low pick in a shallow draft. It's the classic low risk, high reward situation. It probably doesn't work out, but if it does, we come out like bandits.

By the time next season rolls around, what you've mentioned above was happening 3 years ago. Since then, he's basically been a cripple. Like I said in my other post above, it's a 3rd rounder at best IMHO

Yep, implicit in my excitement is getting him super cheap.

Freeman is the 2nd best endurance athlete at our club

You can remove the "almost" from "almost elite"

Jarryn Geary is the best endurance athlete bar Riewoldt in our side and no one is putting him in the elite category.

Frankly for a club with basically zero key forwards to look forward to you should be asking for a straight swap with Spencer White and we can both have a go at getting these kids on the park and playing good footy.

Maybe the Pies should give him the 2 yr contract that he wants then.... you know, cos he's such an elite endurance player

Well I would´t go as far as that but like Lonie he´s been a great pick up for a lower pick and I´m fan of both particularly Lonie.
Better kicks than Geary thats for sure. I don´t why people would consider Geary a reliable kick, he´s far from it.

Thats not to say that Webster won't end up better than the number 5 pick. There is a risk in the draft, and in a poor draft its a bigger risk.
Check out the 2004 draft for instance. StKilda drafting McQualter did better than many who had earlier picks.

We will.

Freeman ain't going anywhere, all that's been said so far is the Saints are interested. He won't go to the Saints.
Evidently you wont considering all you need to do is give him that additional year unless Collingwood enjoy jerking their 20yos around for some reason?

This has got me thinking..

Watching WB in the finals tonight, do we want to 'do a dogs' and over achieve, flying up the ladder?

Or would we prefer to stay down in the bottom 6 for another couple of years and then start to rise?

Both have pros and cons. If we 'do a dogs' then it's great for membership/sponsors/media coverage and would help us greatly in trying to get players like Carlisle or Aish want to come to our club.

If we hang down the bottom 5-6 for another couple of years, it allows us to stockpile a serious group of elite young talent through early draft picks, which may mean we have a higher ceiling and more longevity when we do rise, rather than climbing quickly and then perhaps plateauing in the 5-8 spots on the ladder due to not having the depth of talent of the top 4 teams.

It's an interesting point of discussion IMO.
Our club plays to its potential. We try to win every time we go out there. We do not want to emulate Carlton or Melbourne stockpiling draft picks and never learning what it takes to win. I don't agree with everything Richo has brought us but this is clearly a strong focus. Please don't suggest that we should tank as it offends me and I'm sure others
